For @RockchalkinTexas

  • There was an alias once in Texas

And she was honest and good

    She cheered her Jayhawks

With her husband with whom she stood

She and he rode the train of life

    Across life’s bridges

    And through life’s tunnels

    Station to station they road

There was an alias once in Texas

And she was honest and good

    She cheered her Jayhawks

    With a man we understood

Loved her till death did they part

    And loves her still

    Beyond the Great Divide

    Till once again they ride

There was an alias once in Texas

And she was honest and good

    She cheered her Jayhawks

    And flipped cancer the bird

    She grieves now beyond grieving

    Down where the Gleaner combines

Start their runs from Texas dawns

Crossing Kansas to the Canadian sun

There was an alias once in Texas

And she was honest and good

    She cheered her Jayhawks

    When her husband was gone

There is a harvest that awaits us all

But it came for her husband first

Would it had come for me so she could

Spend even one more day with him.

There was an alias once in Texas

And she was honest and good.

    (R.I.P. Mike)

  • @jaybate-1.0 This website has become much more than a basketball blog. We’ve sometimes acted like a disjointed family at Thanksgiving with the disgruntled Uncles railing at the Whippersnappers with fierce arguments about Fools gold, Jamari, Morningstar, Diallo, and coaching faux pas. Everyone has an opinion. Many times, to our amazement, our attitudes change as we talk about young men, many just young teens. Our glory days our over.

If you stay with this site long enough, you somehow end up with some great friends that have become buddies from all parts of the world. We learn about their families, their “good times” in regard to their connection to KU. Some of us go back a long time. For myself, I proudly display my avatar of the first JoJo.

What I realized last night with @rockchalkintexas was an unexpected feeling of grief, similar to the sadness one feels when a close friend loses a loved one. Thank you @approxinfinity for giving me and many others this family. @rockchalkintexas, I want you to be here at least as long as I can stay.

  • Well said both of you above. I’ve been a jayhawk hoops fan for many years. I used to enjoy the other site, but when it turned negative and the best posters went here, I felt lucky to have found this site.

I’ve been logging in with a new account recently, as my old one jhwkinTgrtown, didn’t want to work anymore, and while a not a big commenter, I’ve really enjoyed learning about the game from people who know it much better than myself.

And sometimes, like when HEM disappeared or someone shares a joy or a loss like rockchalkintexas has, I realize that its not just the knowledge and opinions - those can be found elsewhere on the interwebs - that keep me coming back, but the personalities behind the writing.

I can’t say I “know” of any of you (but feel free to look me up if you’re in st. louis) but sometimes our writing here gives glimpses of who we are. So in that way, I feel like I “know” some of you. Mostly kind, intelligent and passionate folk who share a common history of attending a great school during formative years of our lives.

I was bit surprised for the grief I felt for rockchalkntexas’ loss, someone I’ve never met, I think it speaks to the quality of people, and writing, on this site. Thanks everyone, for your wisdom and wit and efforts that keep this site alive.

Cherish the time with your loved ones and merry christmas to all.

    Tim

  • @wrwlumpy I quite similarly was in a virtual state of shock when she told me. Was as if someone tossed a bucket of cold water on me. I could not even watch the game it was so real, which in itself is no big thing, but the grief feelings are true as can be. So too are these heartfelt prayers.

  • I wasn’t expecting to well up in tears for someone I hadn’t personally met, but I did. I’ve been to four funerals of friends and family this year and was able to stay composed, but this hit me harder than expected. @RockChalkinTexas apparently holds a special place in my heart. I enjoy my bucketteers; don’t any of you dare leave!

Everyone stay safe and healthy as possible this holiday season!!!

  • @dylans God bless all of you, sometimes you have no idea what kind or funny words-think global and Brooks- do to make my day! Merry Christmas and some day we are all going to Hawaii to see our Jayhawks play. Lump is our tour guide! You can bring your wife’s. Please keep @RockChalkinTexas in your prayers. Count your blessings, sometimes I need to be reminded. God bless!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 We think you’re PD Cool too… Merry Christmas to you & yours…

  • I am overwhelmed with all the love and support I have received here and for @jaybate-1.0’s lovely and thoughtful words. I told some of the people here this morning that knew Mike that I was able to make it through last night just because of all of you.

And I will tell you a little secret…HEM sent me a personal message and I have encouraged him to come back to the site as life is too short and you never know when it will be taken.

All our family (on both sides) are in Kansas and you guys have become my second family.

God bless all of you and your families and keep them safe in their travels this blessed season.

    Karen

  • @RockChalkinTexas As always, your grace in the face of adversity astonishes and inspires us all.

Incidentally, a heads-up: We lost my father in law 3 days before Christmas a decade ago. The funeral director was very adamant about our need to make sure someone stayed at the house during all the funeral activity. Apparently there are some real low lifes who specialize in burglarizing houses after perusing obits for times of services. And Christmas is also a hot season since bad guys know there might be some boxed stuff just ripe for the taking. Five years ago I had a cousin whose parents’ house was hit during their funeral.

I wish you only the best. The love people are sending you reflects the fact that you send it all out to everyone. A lesson for us all!

  • @RockChalkinTexas Warm wishes for you and family. I lost both my grandpas in December always makes the holidays less fun without them.

  • @RockChalkinTexas So sorry for your loss.

  • @jaybate-1.0 that was beautiful my friend

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Going on a buckets trip to Hawaii sounds like a blast!

  • @RockChalkinTexas Very sorry for all that has happened. Obviously we don’t know you except by our aliases, but most of us have been around long enought to have formed a bond. I pray God will bless you with comforting memories and encouragement from friends and family as you negotiate these holidays.

  • @jaybate-1.0 Wow. That was great!

Im truly sorry for your loss @RockChalkinTexas
