Quick Shot Clock, Frank Mason and Steph Curry, Lack of Coverage...
-
Lots to talk about.
First… let’s get the white elephant out of the room before his defecation reaches the ceiling…
Dang those sports media wonks! Just because their own beloved teams aren’t playing they decide to leave USA (Kansas) basketball all together out of the news… even on the college basketball websites?!
I put “Kansas Jayhawks Canada” in a Google search and the returns were all local… KUSports, KC… etc.
I’m sure if Duke’s “rat face” went under the knife to reduce his extreme rat nose we would experience massive national coverage about every surgical detail.
I sure hope we do well in these games, just to rub it into all the sports media wonk’s open neck sore that leaked out all their brain tissue.
Okay… I’m done ranting on that.
It seems to me that Kansas will be in excellent position to win a National Championship this year. Why? Outside of the fact that we have pretty good depth at all positions… what we have most that few teams have is PG play from Frank Mason and Devonte Graham.
I believe when the shot clock rules continue to reduce the shot clock it puts more importance on the PG. PGs have to move quickly to get into their offense. They have to work quickly to develop offense, freeing up players to hit shots. And PGs need to be able to score. Now, with a fast moving clock in D1, the ball will, inevitably, get stuck in the hands of the PG fairly often with just a few seconds left on the clock. Few teams (or realistically NO teams) in D1 have the scoring potential of Frank and Devonte. They bring experience, athleticism, talent, basketball IQ and guts to the table. Couldn’t ask for more at this level of basketball.
Is it really a surprise that Golden State won playing small ball? I think Steph Curry would be my pick for players I would want to have the ball at the top of the key with just a few seconds left on the shot clock.
If we get good guard play out of Frank and Devonte, and our defense steps up and plays 24 seconds of defense on every defensive stand, I’m having a hard time thinking of a team that will beat us!
Forget Steve Rogers: KU’s Frank Mason is the REAL Captain America, baby

@drgnslayr add in speedy Diallo, along w/developing Vick!
-
I Googled “KU Canada Sprint Center” and I got 345,000 items including lots of summaries of the game as well as videos and photos; there is even reference to KUBUCKETS on page 3. Let’s face it, the game, to the rest of the world, was pretty much a glorified scrimmage with only local interest. I personally don’t have a problem with it. The WUG don’t seem to be a big deal; try googling “Northern Iowa WUG” and you will be lucky to find the schedule or scores from their appearance there.
-
@JayHawkFanToo I think the point @drgnslayr is trying to make is that Calipari could fart in an elevator and there would be more media attention than KU is getting atm.
-
Calipari is yesterday news, Coach K is the flavor of the day.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Ok then if Coach K farted in an elevator it would make the front page of ESPN…
-
Duke is within “smelling” distance of the major East Coast media hubs…KU? not so much. Like I said, I found plenty of information from many national sources on the KU game so I personally don’t think it is a big deal.
Honestly, how many members in this board even knew about the WUG before KU was selected? It really is not a big or well know event…say, like the Pan American games; like I said, Google "Northern Iowa WUG: and see what you get. Frankly, if Kentucky or Duke were representing the US I would guess that the coverage would be mostly local as well.
-
“I Googled “KU Canada Sprint Center” and I got 345,000 items including lots of summaries of the game as well as videos and photos; there is even reference to KUBUCKETS on page 3.”
I just fed in your search terms and got 354,000 items (which is irrelevant).
But on the first page there was nothing but local references. I know it is more relevant locally… but heck… this is TEAM USA!
-
@drgnslayr I just googled “KU Canada Sprint Center” and got 341,000 items. Then I googled “Mike Krzyzewski farting” and got 577,000 results. This is the real question though If Coach K smelt it, does that mean he dealt it?
-
I put in “John Calipari taking a dump” and got 1,060,000 results. I guess there are a lot of people out there knowing he is full of it.
Which led me to the top news story:
John Calipari topless?
Isn’t that his son with him?
Hey John… you better get some sunscreen protection on. We don’t want to read in headline news how you got a sunburn!!!
-
According to Mason Plumlee Coach K farted in an elevator and held the ‘Door Close’ button for like five minutes on him and ran over his families dog.
I got that from a very reputable source http://www.sportspickle.com/2009/12/freshman-starting-to-suspect-coack-k-is-kind-of-a-dick
Its a funny read lol.

I think we are on to something…
Can we still put threads in an archive folder for easy reference and addition later?
How about we start a thread:
Irrelevant Basketball Information
Seems I’ve had at least a dozen posts of totally irrelevant basketball info just on Cal.
-
@drgnslayr OK we will add the WUG to it! You know since its irrelevant.
-
Maybe Jaybate can link coach K’s flatulent’s to petro shoe deals?
-
Methane is the renewable future of energy, baby!
-
You guys are such a gas.
-
@wrwlumpy who has gas?
-
This is a good opportunity to ask the age old question… Why are there 239 beans in Irish bean soup?
Because one more would be too farty!
-
Maybe the question should be…have you seen any news about any of the other US teams that will be competing a the WUG? I have not; the KU BBall team probably has more info available than the rest of the teams combined.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Or maybe not … at least now. Lots of other news on recruits, the draft, etc. However, once the WUG get going, that will be the litmus test. They’ll be on ESPNU. I bet we get some pub out of this.
-
Help me … has anyone found a boxscore from Tuesday’s game??
-
“Maybe the question should be…have you seen any news about any of the other US teams that will be competing a the WUG?”
There are other USA teams at WUG??? (blush)
Seriously… when I go on a rant you can’t take me too literal or even literal at all. I’m like the Bluto in “Animal House” who goes on a rant about the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor. And the others said, “let him go, he’s on a roll.”
Nope. All the boxes are on summer vacation.
-
-
@HighEliteMajor KC Star ran a muddled box score which I read at 11 pm Tuesday night. That is where I discovered that Lucas and Mickelson combined for a whopping total of 2 pts.
-
Mason, Ellis, Selden and Traylor posted some impressive stats. Without the solid contribution of SMU’s Nic Moore, would we have won that scrimmage?
-
Stat line of the day : Wayne Selden 13 points / 6 assists / 0 turnovers. HUBBA HUBBA…Me likey !
-
@REHawk if we had DG!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 If we had DG we would have won that scrimmage!
-
We need this kind of selfless act during a KU basketball game this year! This is what we need all year long! This is the kind of thing that makes believers out of non believers! Allen Fieldhouse would go NUTS if Mason craped his pants on a game winning drive to the bucket! This is real news! http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/25123051/floridas-adam-lane-is-happy-he-pooped-his-pants-during-a-game
One of the best reads this year for me!
Somebody sharted!
-
@Statmachine that’s what I said!
-
@HighEliteMajor Check KUAthletics.com. I saw one there when I watched the highlight video.
-
Checking the stats, I see that our bigs combined for 34 rebounds: that’s 17 rebounds per 40 minutes.
Even with more possessions because of the faster clock, that seems pretty good.
Jamari led with 10 rebounds in 19 minutes, which looks fine until you see that 6 were offensive. He still needs to show he can rebound on defense.
-
I guess I’ve just seen too many movies in my life -
-
@Crimsonorblue22 @RockChalkinTexas - Thanks.
-
@ParisHawk The 10 rebounds stuck out to me … good catch on the offensive rebounds. Traylor had really about six decent rebounding games last season, including 10 vs. UCSB. I say that because Self described Canada as a “mid-major.” Traylor followed that up with 7 against UK. But only had more than five just four times the rest of the season.
What was really the issue with rebounding was the fact that he regularly disappeared - a majority of the time.
In 24 games, he had four rebounds or less. But in 14 of those games, he had two or less. That’s astonishingly bad. It’s that sort of poor production that kills us.
Couple that with a below average scorer, a guy that gets pushed around in the paint, and an average defender at the absolute best – well, that’s why I don’t like him on the floor.
For Traylor to help Kansas this season, and not be a net negative, he needs to rebound. It’s that simple. Otherwise he costs us possessions and points by his mere presence.
-
Somehow, I knew you would write that post about his Double/Double. He is what he is and he is ours. He had a great game! Apparently only one kind of rebound really counts. He is a fifth year senior that got a late start to the game. He is not a superstar, neither was Brady or Travis. He will be a part of our run this year whether you like it or not. Don’t waste time on being Negative. He has personally won games for us. Once at the free throw line and many times with his hustle. He has lost games for us too. Like all of them have. Lighten up. Progress not Perfection!
-
-
So far this is just preparation and as such it has mostly local interest; once the games are underway, I am sure they will in the national news. Last year Kentucky played in an International tournament (Bahamas), which they also had to subsidize, against the national teams of a couple of countries Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic) plus a team from France and I don’t remember reading anything about the scrimmages they had preparing for the tournament, but once it got underway, we saw the summaries and box scores…
By the way, the box scores of all KU games are always available the the KU Athletic web site; here is a link to that particular box score…. BTW, Traylor had a solid game and I expect him to be a big contributor this coming season.
-
@wrwlumpy he does have some good pts. Don’t won’t to watch a free throw contest.
-
Because of the FIBA basket interference rules, offensive rebound will be more important because they can result in a direct scores.
-
@JayHawkFanToo His offensive tip in was pretty cool.
