####CJOnline’s Jesse Newell: Jayhawks ready for ‘business trip’####

LAWRENCE — A few days ago, Bill Self had one of his players’ parents email him to ask when the team’s free time would be for its upcoming Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament in Nassau, Bahamas.

“I said, ‘This is a business trip. There’s no free time,’” the KU coach said. “‘You have the free time, not us…’”

####KU Sports: Bahamas drama? Self says tourney ‘competitive,’ but KU heavy favorite####

The 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis has been described by ESPN as a tournament that “features the Kansas Jayhawks as well as a handful of solid and/or ascendant programs.”

####Jayhawks, fans arrive at Atlantis resort####

Paradise Island, Bahamas — It’s hard to hide a seven-footer outfitted in Kansas University gear at a resort teeming with college basketball fans…

  • Man that place looks awesome! Much better than the ice age we got here in Kansas.

  • @Lulufulu-I may recall that Merv Griffin was either co-owner or developer of the Paradise Island Resort & Casino when it was built, somewhere in the early 90’s. Usually great weather after hurricane season. Have been there several occasions during the winter months, & for diving & snorkeling is necessary to ferry to an outer island for nice water. Grand Bahama is heavily impoverished & not so good for tourism with the exception of the pier/straw market areas & the resort/casino nearby. Cruise ship visitors like the markets for bartering & interaction with the locals, & you can get great bargains if you persist. I can remember (somewhat Phoggy) paying 75 cents for a fifth of rum, & 4 times that for a six-pack of coke. Too bad these kids can’t enjoy the out islands as that’s where the real pleasure of the climate is found. Personally I like the largely underdeveloped leewards of the USVI & BVI chains more, but I’ve been spoiled for many years. Not as pristine as the South Pacific but not that far from home either. Have always felt more assured around unfamiliar people, sharks, land or water variety, & lizards, large 4 legged ones, where the US flag is high in the sky, & the rum is temptingly much cheaper than water.

  • Let’s see… bucket list:

    1. Learn how to juggle cocoanuts on Thanksgiving.

After tomorrow… I’d like to take a poll in here to see how many of our posters got to watch the Thursday game.

It appears that I’m in luck and my brother-in-law has Directv and a DVR with channel 340. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

I don’t know if this is correct… but I found this list out there:

    AT&T U-verse TV Channel #1106, DIRECTV Channel #340, DISH Network Channel #167

I guess AXS TV is considered a premium channel… meaning… you probably have to have some kind of package beyond the minimum basic cable package. Since I have access to Directv, I checked out their site and all their packages above basic seemed to have this channel.

Good luck to everyone in here! I hope you all have a tasty Thanksgiving and can make the 2:30pm tip-off!

  • Kind of funny and ironic, I think.

KU partners up with TWC for unprecedented access to KU sports. Basketball is all anyone really is concerned about.

So, I don’t have TWC or Comcast. But I was able to watch every game between various establishments and the in-laws.

However, the one game TWC customers don’t get is on Thanksgiving day. Most will get shut-out – how many TWC customers can bolt a family gathering on Thanksgiving; and even then, find an open establishment with the game?

  • @globaljaybird…When I was stationed at Stephenville Air Force Station, Newfoundland, 1970, we paid 75 cents for qrts of Old Forester and some other brand of horse p!$$. Of course they only sold when it got close to payday when nobody had money. Happy hour at the club was 10 cents for anything. Alcohol helped the year on that mountain top go by faster. (beer)

  • If you are on WOW in Lawrence AXS is included in the “silver” cable package at channel 298. I called and learned that I could upgrade from bronze to silver for $8 / month. At the same time they replaced my grandfathered Knolegy internet with a better service at a total cost of $1 less cost per month and I also asked for and received a “loyal customer” discount of $15/month for the next 12 months. So now I have the game, a bunch more channels I will never watch, better internet speed and almost $200 bucks in my pocket. Rock Chalk!

  • Anyone notice we are 0-3 against UTEP? Several infamous games, the one in 66 when they said JoJo White stepped out on his game winning shot. I was only 2 at the time so I had to watch the movie Glory Road to learn about that one.

I was very much alive and stunned when an 8th seeded UTEP knocked us out in the 2nd round. Don’t remember much about that game. I assume it was Adonis Jordan’s team with Richard Scott, maybe Terry Brown from downtown, and Steve Woodbury? I know I could go and look it up. Maybe someone remembers it better than I?

Anyone notice we are only 3-7 against Iowa, which is the only ranked team other than us in the Bahamas? I would guess there aren’t many teams with winning records against us who’ve played us a number of times.

I did notice that Wake Forest demolished us 84-53 in the very early 2000’s, a whooping that surely taught Kirk and Drew and Nick a few lessons that would pay off in their back to back final fours.

As far as the TV thing. AXS, directtv channel 340, doesn’t work on mine. Maybe I’ll call them. If it involves more money I doubt I will.

The LJW story has a picture of the court where we’re playing. I’m sorry, but playing a game in a room that next weekend will be a convention of sock sellers, and then host a wedding reception the next is not my idea of a basketball arena. It’s torture on the kids too. You’re going to the Bahamas, but as Self says, it’s a business trip, forget enjoying this beautiful place. Please report to the Atlantis room for a film session on Villanova guys. I’d much rather that they schedule some of these non conference games at AFH and at the gyms of these teams. What I’m saying is, I’m just a bit jealous of all who get to go there to see us play!

  • Well luckily I caught it soon enough & seen that the KU games were gonna be on a channel I’ve never heard of. Found out my cable company had it and got it today at 4:30!!

  • Wissox… surprised your directv doesn’t have it. Go to the directv internet site and put your zip code in. You can do a search on AXS. I thought all directv subscribers with almost any package would have access to it.

My brother-in-law says it works on his directv and he’s recording it for me. As a backup, I have another friend dvr-ing the game for me on his directv.

    I’m optimistic, but not 100%.

Yes… we don’t have good luck against UTEP. In '66 they were called “Texas Western” and was the first all black starting five. I don’t mind that loss… because the Miners ended up beating an all white Kentucky team that year and it played a big role in opening the door for more African-American players being recruited to schools that previously only recruited white kids.

We lost to them again in '92… second round. Trying to remember the third loss…

I think other teams in the ACC call them “Weak Forest.”

This starts out a business trip… but at some point those guys will get a few hours on the beach.

  • @brooksmd-I sat in old DC Stadium with Big Bro in the mid 60’s & drank px beer for $1.25 a six pack while watching the Senators play. They allowed us to walk right in with it believe it or not. DC was renamed RFK Stadium a few years later also was relatively new back then & one of the few cantilever stadiums built in the country, using Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural principles with no pillars or columns to obstruct your vision…Hell, that’s what the beer was for! Have an outstanding & great Thanksgiving!

  • Have TWC, so likely will be shut out. Anyone know if this will be on justin.tv?

  • @brooksmd-Later in the week his shipmate that had been with us at the stadium, exclaimed to us during a family picnic at Ft. Washington on the Potomac, that “This was where, during the Revolutionary War, George Washington soundly beat off the British.” Their wives literally wanted to hide after that one & I imagine that later he did as well.

  • @globaljaybird … lol, I often wondered what happened to the Brits in that battle.
