What KU Football Cannot Overcome.

I'm sure our team is happy. They love finding ways to lose and they did it again.

Constantly shooting themselves in the foot. Maddening.
On the bright side, Marshall seems to be gaining momentum.
Anybody recall that first replay review when the Utah receiver was literally bobbling the ball out of bounds but it was still a catch??
-
Need to invest in the OLine in the offseason. KU has struggled running the ball against the 2 best teams they've played this year with under 3 ypc against both Missouri and last night against Utah.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 That's the key to winning football.
-
Utah averaged 6.6 ypc. We averaged 2.8. This is not an aberration, its what always happens when we play a good team. We absolutely must improve in the trenches.
-
It’s old news but the games are won in the trenches, always have been and always will be. The defensive line isn’t too impressive outside of Harris.

I'm usually the Negative Nellie here so I'm not sure what to think. The game I watched had Marshall throwing for 330+ yards and we were about 3 or 4 stupid penalties and a couple of boneheaded play calls from beating one of the best teams in the country on their home turf.

If I’m being a 100% honest this team is more competitive than I thought they would be. That’s what makes the bone headed penalties and give aways more frustrating. Saturday is a big day for Lance. Find away to win this one and everyone suddenly will get a lot of patience back. Lose and the seat starts to get warm. I don’t think he gets fired but there will plenty on that wagon.

I could criticize . . . and I have, but they stayed within 24-27 and were a yard from making it 31-34. Then drove 68 yards before turning it over on downs. A case can be made that LL is doing a good job with an average QB and and undersized RB lacking depth.

Our 5 games so far were all pre-determined:
-
vs LIU, too big of a talent advantage, no way we were ever going to lose
-
vs misery, rivalry game, no way we were ever going to win
-
vs Arizona State, "primetime/special" game in London, there is no way we win such a game
-
vs Middle Tennessee, too big a gap in talent, no way we were going to lose
-
vs Utah, too big a gap in talent the other way, no way we were going to win
Our next two games are also pre-determined. We play K-State and then Baylor. There is no chance we win either game. The first game of our season where the outcome is actually determined on gameday is at TCU on Halloween.

@Jayhawk_69 I disagree about the talent gap on ASU, we dominated that game statistically and made some insane errors for a D1 college football team. I’m not sure anyone that watched that would chalk it up as they had better horses than us. Utah and Missouri had better rosters but not ASU. We could’ve beat Missouri and Utah if we played mistake free football and didn’t turn it over. To beat a better team, you have to play well and get the ball to bounce your way.
-
I did not say there was a talent gap between us and ASU. I said that it was a special game being played in London and that there was no way we would win such a game, as the pressure is too much for us.
Regarding Utah and Misery, you proved me right by saying "if we played mistake free football". Kansas football and mistake-free football are mutually-exclusive terms.
-
@JoJoAndMe I think Marshall is WAY better than average. He just doesn't have enough experience yet. If he stayed here 6 years (lol) his numbers would far exceed those of the current Tampa Bay starting QB
-
@Jayhawk_69 the penalties are really starting to grind my gears. It’s a reflection of poor coaching. Do you think there is a big talent gap against KSU?
-
I don't think the talent gap between KU and KSU is huge, but we never win rivalry games and we reeeaaally like to shoot ourselves in the foot against KSU. There will be lots of dropped passes, botched snaps, muffed returns etc.

I don’t think athletics has the money to replace him and hire someone and find the NIL budget to become competitive.
Good or bad I think we have LL for a bit.
-
@Jayhawk_69 I expect us to lose against them until I actually see us beat them again. I imagine the game will be close and we will do a few stupid things to either blow the game or blow it wide open for them. I like Travis Goff but one the dumbest things I’ve ever read about sports related in recent years was him telling or sending someone over to KSU before the game last year telling them to expect a field rushing after the game. Give the team extra motivation in a rivalry game. Smooth brain activity.

@Kcmatt7 I don’t disagree with that assessment and don’t believe he should be fired after this season even if we have won our last game of the season. I predicted 2 wins and still feel pretty good about that. But we may steal another one at some point. The points you make are why we will never be taken seriously in CFB. I don’t have stats on every coach in the country but I’d bet a high amount of money a coach in his 6th year at a power 4 school isn’t returning for a 7th if he hasn’t made the post season for 3 straight seasons. Look at Aranda at Baylor, people have been screaming for his job for the last 3 seasons and he has won a conference championship in 2021 and made bowls 2 of the last 4 years. Before Briles and RG3 their program mirrored ours on most levels. At this point in time it’s a hard sell that KU football will be any better the day LL leaves to the day he showed up.
