Money next year

I would really really like to avoid Stokes like the plague next year, especially if Self comes back and especially especially if he doesnt take a salary cut. Regardless of how talented the player is, the highest paid players on our roster have not worked out under Self. It has created a hierarchy where the team does not play like a team. Give me a roster where everyone basically makes the same amount of money and then f’n forget about the money when youre on the hardwood. Dont play the guys you pay more. As fans dont worry about how much one dude does based on how much theyre paid. We are all guilty of this culture, and we need to find a way to get better, not worse, as the season progresses so we can peak in March and not look burnt out.

So with a $23.1 million dollar buyout on a lifetime contract Bill has Kansas bent over a barrel. At a certain point, which may be now, if he doesnt do this gracefully, the Kansas faithful is going to turn on him, because of his contract structure.
Kansas could just threaten to cancel the basketball season next year because they cant afford his buyout plus a basketball team, blame it on him, and pay him out. Want to go that way Bill? PS, cant afford a statue that route either. Lets call that the “Bill who??” Option.

Florida lost

@crimsonblu22 i am 100% not suggesting creepy
golden boy. -
@approxinfinity HEM always wanted to get rid of Self b/c he only won 1 title and didn't keep gettng into the F4. Then HEM disappeared (during Covid I think), and Bill won a second title a couple of years later. The "What have you done for me lately?" impatience is ridiculous considering all the drastic challenges facing coaches.

So if we spent $8million on this roster what if we pay 800k per player for 10 guys? And then create a bonus structure where for every game in the tournament they advance, each players gets an additional bonus and other incentives? Can we build a hardhat lunchpail culture where the players might be getting paid but at least they are genuinely evenly invested in the success of the team?
-
@mayjay hes the highest paid coach in college basketball
Outside of 2022, this team is 5-6 in tournament games since 2019.
-
@approxinfinity lol…this sport is done. Why watch minor leagues? That all it is now
-
@mayjay this was the tail end of Tony Bennett's UVA tenure:
2018-19: 35-3 (16-2 ACC) - NCAA National Champions
2019-20: 23-7 (15-5 ACC) - Season canceled (COVID)
2020-21: 18-7 (13-4 ACC) - ACC Regular Season Champs, NCAA R64
2021-22: 21-14 (12-8 ACC) - NIT Quarterfinals
2022-23: 25-8 (15-5 ACC) - ACC Regular Season Champs, NCAA R64
2023-24: 23-11 (13-7 ACC) - NCAA First FourSeems not unlike Self:
2021–22 Kansas 34–6 14–4 T–1st NCAA Division I Champion
2022–23 Kansas 24–8** 13–5 1st NCAA Division I Round of 32
2023–24 Kansas 23–11 10–8 T–5th NCAA Division I Round of 32
2024–25 Kansas 21–13 11–9 6th NCAA Division I Round of 64
2025–26 Kansas 24–11 12–6 T–3rd NCAA Division I Round of 32 -
@approxinfinity no second weekend appearances in 4 seasons is horrible ROI
-
@approxinfinity incentives are a big no no
-
@mayjay his “F YOU ALL” last message was a nice touch

alright. these limits seem arbitrary and ludicrous. lets pay them like its a very lucrative full time job but not incentivize performance?
-
@farmerjayhawk also the ACC began a "success incentive initiative" in the 2024-25 season to reward schools with additional revenue based on conference performance in postseason competitions, how is this any different than the players not being able to capitalize on NIL if this money is withheld from player bonuses?
-
@approxinfinity I don’t disagree, but the NIL rules are just that. Name, image, and likeness. You’re not allowed to do anything other than that.
-
As far as i can tell, the schools can "revenue share" in any way then want though, right?
I poked around and couldn't find any limits on structure. Who knows. it's all wrapped in a riddle.
But 100% against paying em all the same. Ya get what you can, tis the American way. All that being said, i HATE this entire pay system. Way out of control. It'll be a death blow to college sports at some point.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk yes and no. Every school has a hard cap on RevShare and those amounts get negotiated in advance. So sure you can pay a player but it’s only a fixed amount.

Slept on it but not well. As i said i think in 22, my fandom for KU was always synonymous for being a fan of Self. I became a fan in 2003. I love what he did for this program and he navigated some difficult stretches masterfully. The two concepts (fan of KU and fan of Self) have diverged from each other steadily for me as it became clear that Bill was not being adaptive, that the players were no longer developing and the locker room mojo was no longer good. While I will always appreciate what Bill Self has done, that contribution is now historical, the program lives on and needs a new hero to take the reins in a new era. My position I think is not an indictment on Bill Self the legend, it is a lack of faith in his ability to be adaptable in a way that meets the moment. Do we have reason to be hopeful that Bill will be able to recruit the right guys and enough of them, and play a deep enough roster that doesnt have chemistry issues and gets better as the year progresses? If so, what gives us this optimism? Other programs are doing it, why arent we? Lets say we bring in a new guy who toils with similar first round exits but is the right fit, and finds his footing after a few seasons .What confidence do we have that Self would outperform that guy if he continues, when every year is a rebuild?

it was more than that on the roster by a fair bit from the little that I know
