Transfer Rumblings

@drgnslayr Look beyond the raw stats. Very bad.

Not a player that would do well at Kansas and has never been on a winning team… EVER. Give me winners please…

MASSIVE NEWS INCOMING. I was told not to go public with it so I’m behaving. No DMs.
ETA on this massive news? Who is the best follow to get that when it drops?
Based on the fact that Vernon did a cryptic tweet and Swain is posting stuff on 247 premium in the last 10 minutes I’d say probably not too long…
-
Not sure how you discount his stats from two years ago when he averaged over 17ppg, 75.9% FT 53.4% 2FG 36.6% 3FG. Last year he went down because of the team, hence why this local is in the portal.

VOLUME! Look beyond the raw numbers. He put those stats up being the offensive hub on a BAD team. 104 ORTG while putting up 17 a game is bad.
I hope we don’t have to revisit this conversation with him in a Jayhawk uniform. I’d be disgusted.
I implore you to look at his player comps for his “great” season averaging 17 pts a game.
-
He put up those stats being double-teamed. His numbers remind me of JWil.
-
@drgnslayr Much worse. Jalen was more efficient (see PER and ORTG, still not elite in that regard but he was bearing a large load), a much better rebounder and defender. I don’t think this is going anywhere and I just pray we don’t even look in his direction.
-
Well, it’s out there. @benshawks08

@BShark Vernon reporting Bobby expected to enter the portal. Is that the MASSIVE news? I mean, it’s news but I wouldn’t call it MASSIVE…

More than that. We only expect 4 players back. Juan/KJ/Udeh/Zuby.
-
Very little offense coming back. Looks like we need a proven scorer with lots of experience. Actually… at least 2!
We’ve got hype players coming in. Better look for proven experience.

I think you’ll be happy with who we are targeting.
I would expect the staff to sign a guard now, whereas that was not the case before. 2 wings and 1 guard for sure.
With this many leaving, it makes sense how we could have one pretty stud guy already silently committed.

With this lineup KJ might start at the 3! Lol
-
@benshawks08 He will continue to start at the 5 lol
-
We can run a 1-2-2 zone defense and put Udeh (with his long arms and fast hands) at point. Kind of what brought us back against Memphis in '08 with BRush at point!
I’m getting excited now! lol

Placeholder for Ern imo.
-
@TYOHawk Believe KJ will start next year at the 5. Ideally, you are correct.
-
Maybe we lose one of our bigs and trade for a guy who can score with his back to the basket.

With 4 players it might just be a box and none.
-
I shouldn’t laugh!
-
@drgnslayr Bill self revolutionizing college defense with his tough 2-2 zone. Or maybe a 1-1-2 full court press.
-

Maybe we put Udeh at the 4?
-
It’s too early in the day for me to take a drink @benshawks08
-
If I’m not mistaken… we are allowed to play with just 4 players.
He can revolutionize the game again! Why have all the extra clutter of another player?! Streamline approach.
Finally, he gets his entire starting group to actually commit to playing defense! (taking a jab at some from this year)
-
@drgnslayr Need zuby and udeh to work on their 3 ball so we can still play 4 out on offense. (KJ will definitely have a long ball prepared so no worries there)
-
ha… okay… I’m buying into the dream!

Fatigue wouldn’t be a problem either because they are all 18-25 and as we know, athletes of that age simply don’t wear out.
-
-
@drgnslayr Hopefully walking it up a split second faster than against Arkansas. Too soon?
-
This coming season will be a challenge. It will take a very special Self to keep some of our performance streaks in place.
-
I am absolutely fascinated on how Self will fill this roster out. With playing time, NIL, and the Kansas brand Self should have the pick of the litter in the portal.
-
Curious how Self will keep these young guns freshman players willing to sometimes take a back seat to a seasoned transfer. These guys probably see themselves as the next Gradeys. Granted… minutes are up for grabs… but we’ve never really had the best results counting on freshman minutes. Gradey was an exception and had a fab season but his disappearance sometimes was expected. Painful against Arkansas. Now imagine having 2 or 3 guys disappearing in games and having to count on Juan and KJ for offense!
Maybe I’m wrong… and Calipari is right. Start a load of freshman stars and kick some arse! lol

This could be true, or we could be AWESOME. Let’s see who we get.
-
So what do we need?
-
a 5 with back to the basket skills and defense. Proven.
-
a backup PG for Juan with some experience and can play our style.
-
at least one utility guard with some proven offense and capability to defend.
-
either a power forward who can rebound and defend with any version of offense or a large wing who can shoot well and drive. Both players need respectable handles.
If you see it this way… should we keep two similar post players? (Zuby and Ernest)
Is Zach leaving?
-
-
We need wings who can score. That is priority 1,2 and 3.
-

Feelings on a 14 ppg guy (at a P5 school) that shot 40% from three?

Perfect !
-
We need everything except a starting PG.
Hopefully, some of our young guns will fill those spots. But we need proven everything at 2-5.
We need a real 5 desperately.
-
@drgnslayr I’m happy with where we are at the 5. Between KJ, Udeh, and Zuby I think that will be less of a question mark next year.
The 6-4 to 6-8 scorers/shooters are most important on my list of needs.
Back up point guard would be next. But I think Elmarko is hopefully in line for this role as well as a 1/2 combo guard scorer type.
Adams reclassifying shows we want that 3/4 wing scorer but we will see how he plays as a freshman.
I’d honestly just flip the order you have for priorities.
-
Our weakest spot was the 5 last year.
If we had a real 5 who could score back to the basket and rebound we would have had a superior defensive and rebounding team.
Instead… it’s almost like we wasted the great defense from Kevin and Juan because they had to do it all.
I’m not sold on any of our current choices in the paint. It simply isn’t fair to consider KJ a 5 and expect he can do what needs to be done. I don’t want to post critical material on KJ because he is busting his butt the best he can and has been admirable as a 6.6" post player.
Ernest and Zuby are soooo rough. Both could be really helpful in another year after this one. Meanwhile… we have next year to worry about. I don’t see either of these guys being a real back to the basket threat this coming year. And expect another year of foul trouble. Plus… an experienced post player would help Ernest and Zuby develop immensely! Right now, they have no experienced post players to learn from.
I don’t think people realize how much Kevin helped us. He was like a defensive monster man and helped weakside at all positions. Losing him creates a MONSTER DEFENSIVE HOLE! Who is going to make that up? Our rockstar freshman recruits?
KJ will get killed without Kevin as his defensive sidekick. Ernest and Zuby need another year (if we are lucky).
Having a low post scoring threat is desperately needed and low post defense is a must… and REBOUNDING!
Kevin… PLEASE STAY!

@BShark all I know is he’s in that group
