St. Joseph’s Hawks. A battle of Hawks. A battle of Hawks trying to avoid an 0-2 start to their season.
I think with no modifier to what kind of hawk they are I believe mascot wise we have the upper hand. In the US there are 25 varieties of Hawks, none known as a Jay Hawk for some reason, so I’m a little suspicious of the website I found this information.
St. Joseph’s Hawks immediately brings to mind one of my bad basketball memories. As a child growing up in Chicago I was all over the DePaul Blue Demons. After a final four in which they nearly knocked Larry Bird out (ruining the legendary Bird-Magic final) DePaul added some studdly recruits like Terry Cummings and they were all set. They’d lost once all year by a point. Big favorite to win it all, ranked #1 almost all season. 85% DePaul FT shooter missed a FT with like 2 seconds left, STJ guy cherrypicked at the other end and he scored an uncontested layup to win. Ray was a great coach but his guys weren’t coached up very well that day. Probably his best chance to win was that season.
So I still kind of hate STJ’s unknown variety of Hawk.
Since STJ is a Philly school, I can’t help but think of my favorite Philly coach’s moment with the coach of the team we play Tuesday. How many of us have dreamed of being John Cheney in a moment like this?
As for today I know little about them. They lost yesterday in OT which on a holiday means at least they got paid double time for those extra five minutes. Auburn beat them which is also receiving votes. It should be noted that the votes they received were the mail in variety so the Trump administration is demanding a recount. It’s kind of a weird prestige to Also Receive Votes. Imagine going to a recruit and telling them “Come play for us and you’ll also receive votes”?!?! The self esteem of those Not Also Receiving Votes (NARS) is quite devastating. Just ask any KState fan or Misery fans.
So I really don’t know what to expect today. You can chat about it here. Or somewhere else if you want or with your wife, significant other and insignificant other.

Spread is KU -19. Don’t think I’d bet that.
-
@BShark Me neither but I’d never bet on a game! I don’t even know what KU-19 means. Can you explain that?
-
KU is favored to win by 19. St Joe is expected to be pretty bad. Looks like they play almost all guards and take a lot of threes, should be interesting.
-
So it doesn’t mean KU Minus 19?
-
I could see about like KU/Gonzaga just reversed around 12. - -If it gets worse then that then just like yesterday didn’t get to worried about it - - today I hope people won’t wouldn’t read to much if it is 19 points, cause like what has been said they suppose to be bad. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
It means instead of starting the game 0-0, the game starts KU -19 to SJU 0
-
For betting purposes
-
This St Joe team took Auburn to OT. I don’t think they’re 20 points worse than us at this point. But that would be a nice statement win after yesterday’s showing.

I mean, maybe, did you see what Gonzaga did to Auburn? They also basically quit playing with 8 minutes left. Insane.
-
@BShark I saw the score but I didn’t get to watch.

Gonzaga was in complete control basically. They quit bothering when they got up 30.
-
I would expect KU wins comfortably today. Auburn is terrible this year and they went to OT in a late game so I have to think their legs are going to be feeling it at some point today. Quick turnaround for both teams today but I can’t see KU letting this one get close
-
I’m gonna chat here since I started the game thread here.
-
The tension builds, the crowd roars
-
Layup line forms for STJ and Big Dave misses a bunny. Is this a tape of yesterday?
-
Someone on the other thread is already predicting we’ll lose I assume.
-
Of course they may be right.
-
Rebounding is our biggest weakness this year it appears
-
Abaji gives us something we haven’t had all season, a lead.
-
This game thread, like the other is going to be lost in cyberspace.
-
3 point shooting may be a strength this year.
-
This team is good enough to take Auburn to OT who is also receiving votes.
-
Badgers and UAPB tonight at 9. Just titillating matchup.
-
We can’t even dribble.
-
Last time I saw this many turnovers was in the bakery
-
#1 is in the game for KU. This in no way means he’s our top player.
-
In the 10 seconds it took me to rename the title of the game thread STJ scored 5 points.
-
The fans are loudly chanting Air Ball at the hapless Hawk
-
Wilson to Grant. Sounds presidential
-
If I was in Fort Meyers, FL on a day like this I’d be glad they didn’t let me in the arena because I’d be at the beach.
-
Grant or Foster, can’t tell which waves at the Hawk as he shoots right over him.
-
If Enaruna plays defense like that he’s a lock for the NBA.
-
I remember that one point this season when we were actually leading a game.
-
I always wanted to be able to goal tend a basketball shot.
-
Cocky StJ player thinking he can play D like the guy he was guarding.
-
Braun single handedly shooting us back near the lead.
-
This game brought to you by beaches
-
We’re on a 7-0 run, and Big Dave adds the extra point
-
Our defense after scoring this season is atrocious
-
Big Dave can make FT’s
-
A luxurious 4 point lead.
-
That alley oops is a candidate for the not top ten
-
Since going down by 7 we’ve out scored them by 16. Now that’s Jayhawk basketball. I’m actually enjoying watching.
-
Buzz Lightfoot, goes to the line. He’ll be social security eligible next season.
-
It actually might be our team scoring 100 today.
-
As soon as I type that we go brain dead on offense again.
-
We’re doing enough right.
-
And that’s the half folk. See you in 15 as the Jayhawks try to wrap up this first win of the season.
-
That day I almost broke Scooter Berry’s hand in my first week on campus, but that’s another story for another time.
