Thon Maker

  • well guys, watched the recruiting special on ESPNU last night and they asked who was working the hardest and KU was listed as 1 of the 6, then I read that he is going to be at the game tonight, didn’t realize we were back in the mix for him. So guys whz your thoughts? is this a good thing or not? the ESPN guy says he is a great teammate, the other players love playing with him, he is no longer rated but he gave a reason for that, maybe had something to do with him going to Canada I’m not sure. He said he graded out at 97 whicj he said would still make him a top 5 player whz your thoughts? ROCK CHA;LK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer54 I m worried about eligibility with him. And then there’s the usual concerns about the presumed OAD. But those issues aren’t going away…

  • @Hawk8086 ya I agree with you, At this point and time we sure don’t need anymore eligibility issues

  • He is not the Self type of post player. He likes to play on the perimeter more. I don’t think he would thrive in our system at least not in his one and only year.

Not getting too excited about the possibility of getting him.

  • Maker would be a great test for Self.

The coach that signs Maker better be ready to make some adjustments in order to utilize his abilities.

Gosh… imagine a 1-3-1 with Maker around the FT line?

Or how about forgetting his height and playing him either at the 3 or 4? If he develops enough dribbling skills… imagine him driving in the paint and drawing over the defense so he can make an easy assist to our other big man?

I would like to see us sign Maker. Finally put to rest the talk that we can’t adjust our play to the talent of our individual players.

  • @drgnslayr Agree that with his skill set the possibilities are endless and extremely enticing. But this is Coach Self we are talking about (and I don’t mean that negatively).
If Thon Maker spends four years with Coach Self, he would develop both his current strengths as well as his current weaknesses (his inside back to the basket game). But with one year, coach would have to just let him play through his current strengths, which I haven’t seen happen so far…

  • @FarSideHawk

The Mayor was able to bring in players with less talent and have them produce in their first year.

We need to be able to show the same capabilities, especially if we are trying to continue to go after the top elite recruits.

  • @drgnslayr he had a lot of juco and transfer kids. Lots of dui’s too.

  • Thon Maker has made a lot of progress since the USA vs the World game where his weaknesses were exposed. He did very well in Summer camps and with an additional year of HS he could be a real superstar…however, it is possible that he will claim that he stayed an extra year at a prep school and his real graduating class was one year ago and so he is eligible for the NBA…

  • Well just saw off Jayhawk Slant that Thon won’t be the only one visiting the game tonight, also see where they are having a 2017 point guard coming in for the game also. ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @JayHawkFanToo The NBA views prep schools as HS and the rule is not 18 or one year removed from HS, it’s 18 AND 1 year removed from HS. If the rule was or, Svi would’ve been eligible for the 2015 NBA draft but he wasn’t. There’s also countless kids who’ve gone to prep school for an extra year and don’t go the NBA because the rule is and, not or.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

I did not mention that a player must be 18 years old. The rules is that the player must be 19 years old on the year of the draft and one year removed from what would have been his graduating class. Maker will be 19 next February and could have graduated last season but chose to go an extra year. In many countries prep schools are considered post-HS and this is why it was widely assumed Maker chose to go to one in Canada and not one in the States.
