MU feeling non important in KC with the Big 12 basing their basketball conference tournament in Kansas City for another 4 years, called the Sprint Center and the gal said, “Who are you”
-
MIZZOU In KC? Who in the SEC would care? Maybe Arkansas since they don’t have a big town?

A new attorney started in our firm Wednesday and his bio said he was a grad of MU. Upon being introduced to him in the kitchen, I shook hands, said my name and promptly belted out Rock Chalk Jayhawk. He just looked at me! Later in the day as he was being given a tour of the library by me by the librarian, she stopped at my desk and asked if I had met him yet. He said yes and then saw all my KU paraphenalia and remarked “I can’t even begin to talk about basketball now since our team is soooo bad.” I pointed to my signed pic of Kelly and he proclaimed that they would have been better off staying in the Big 12. I can foresee lots of razing in the future by me!
It’s %&$#+?@ raining again this morning and had torrential rains overnight.

“You mean, part of Kansas City is in Missouri? How weird is that?!”
I’m estimating that I’ve heard that said now about 100,000 times.
I know I should be more truthful, but my reply is always, “Strange, huh? But it’s just an irrelevant tiny part in Missouri!”
-
Funny! It’s always bothered me the Chiefs and Royals have to play in East Berlin.

Vanya Shivashankar, 13, of Olathe, Kansas, and Gokul Venkatachalam, 14, of Chesterfield, Missouri, were declared co-winners of the National Spelling Bee. It is the second year in a row in which the contest has ended in a tie.
Shivashankar correctly spelled the word “scherenschnitte” and Venkatachalam correctly spelled the word “nunatak.” The contest was declared a draw because there weren’t enough words left on the competition’s list for them to keep facing off until only one was left standing.
HaHa. Missouri couldn’t win it outright again. Had to share it with KS!
NOTICE they gave the longer word to the girl!!! :

@drgnslayr Kind of funny that the state of Missouri would name one of it’s biggest and most prestigious cities after the state of KANSAS.
-
With names like those, they have to be spelling champs just to spell their own names.
There was a reason why many immigrants “Americanized” (simplified) their names.
Both of these students must create oodles of humility from all their teachers during role call.

@drgnslayr I see you watch FOX news !!!
-
I ask this in all seriousness … why are Indian kids so good at spelling?
-
@HighEliteMajor I really do not know !! However, I would think it has to be influenced by the life style they live. I would guess they generally are not an “outgoing group” and they stay to their selves, with “strong family values.” The parents “drill” the value of an education into their kids minds.
-
@HighEliteMajor Ironically that was the subject of an NPR show I heard the other night. It is NOT, as many people conspire to, because they have “good spelling genes.” Seriously, that is what some people are claiming. It IS because they work hard at it, are not going into sports, and generally have both parents who are highly educated. It really boils down to their hard work.
-
@RockChalkinTexas Hard work AND genetics. You mentioned parents being highly educated. But they have to genetically have the foundation. Very few people that even with hard work could achieve that level of mental acuity. Perhaps a parallel to the NBA. Hard work is part of it, but genetics is a large part too.

I remember listening to some talking head around the time immediately after we won it in 1988 say that KU was the first team since…(I forget, maybe ever) to win the NCAA while playing in their home state.
Of course I always turned that argument around on people saying KU won because it was like a home game, and I said they didn’t even play in their home state, in fact it was in the state of their archival. How is that a home court advantage?
