The Original Rules of Basketball

  • I’m probably the only one who didn’t already know this, but I read today that on the same day that the Booth family purchased the original rules of basketball for $4,338,500.00, a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation (1 of 48 ) that was signed by Abraham Lincoln and owned by Robert F. Kennedy sold for $3,778,500.00.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry…

  • Possible reason for prices:

Rules of Basket Ball = 1/1 (one of a kind)

Copy of Emancipation Proclamation = 1/48

  • @bskeet I wonder how much the E.P. would have been worth had it been signed by James Naismith? 😉

Unfortunately… the American masses can’t focus on too many things at one time. Sports is about all they can handle.

I know it would suck to be without sports. But if we had no sports, and nothing else having the same addictive potential, might Americans spend more time studying history and politics? Might our country be a lot better off?

I think if we had another hockey event like with had in 1980… winning the gold over those tough Russians… the goalkeeper could run for President and it would be a landslide! Who knows… maybe we would be better off!

I’m saying this because I am VERY GUILTY of poor time management.

  • @nuleafjhawk In 1987 there was a “one of a kind store” in Southern California that I visited one day. I saw a letter signed by Abraham Lincoln on sale for $11,000. It was way over my credit card limit so I didn’t even think about buying it. A few days later I went to my credit union to see if I could get a 10k loan on my signature. They said yes-I went back to the store and it was gone. Still kicking myself for not putting a down payment on that letter the first minute I saw it.

  • @JayhawkRock78 It’s funny - I’ve never been an autograph seeker, I just don’t get it. BUT - something like that would be pretty dang neat to have.

  • @nuleafjhawk I thought it was an April fools joke.

  • Anyone catch the auction flyer for Phog Allen’s rule amendments?

Think it says, “Teams must recruit, recruit, recruit!”

  • @JayhawkRock78

Sounded like a good trade… your signature for Abe’s.
