For Lulu

  • @Lulufulu

    Myitkyina.

The team will put you on its back and carry you there, if it has to, or you can march it on your own two feet, but we are going there one way or another.

I said it was going to get tougher and tougher.

It is not as bad as it is going to get.

You might as well get ready for that.

These guys are being offered the kind of obstacles that turn teams into legends, after a season.

Frank Mason on sore knees is faster and tougher than other teams’ grade A healthy point guards. He is lightening fast! With 5 days rest and everything on the line he will be unstoppable. Same for Kelly. Wayne is breaking through the knee fear barrier. BG’s foot will heal and he will be blazing treys. Everything depends on Perry and I have not one doubt that a Kansan will produce when needed.

We are going the hard way, but we ARE going.

Self’s major decisions on strategy have been vindicated. They overcame the inevitable Trey shooting slump, the injuries and suspensions to deliver us through adversity to the eleventh straight B12 title and the 2 seed it ensured. The Trey slump is coming to an end at the perfect moment.

Myitkyina is now near, not far.

We are coming in under cover.

One foot in front of the other.

Think of sitting on the patio May 1st with a cold beer and a national champion t-shirt.

Think of 10 years from now when your grand kids ask, “Grandpa, tell us again about the season the Marauders won it all when no one believed they could.”

Think about saying, “I was there beginning to end. I saw it with my own eyes. They were the most heroic team I ever saw.”

One foot in front of the other.

  • @jaybate-1.0

Self’s major decisions on strategy have been vindicated.

    HEM is going to bitch-slap you…ROTFLMAO 🙂 🙂 🙂

  • @jaybate-1.0 I sure hope the trey shooting slump is over. Because if its not, its going to be a short tournament.

I am seeing that other posters want a rematch with UK. I personally do not, but if it happens, they probably have the best chance at beating UK because of the three point shooting. Playing hard and playing smart, like not trying to put up floaters in the lane, could get the W. That is a game that the shot fake was made for.

  • @DinarHawk

Isn’t that the case with any team in Madness?

    Shooting slump equals quick out.

Everyone needs to stop holding Self and KU to different standards than other elite coaches and programs. Self hasn’t even had his first Cal trip to lose in the first round of the NIT! And this team has lost way more to injury and suspension and started with less talent than that UK team started with.

Coach K has had a bunch of early exits.

Fred Dread, the Mayor of Ames has never won a title or a ring! He is just plain potential nothing else.

Pitino has been up and down. Rick, as good as he is, with 4 footers is a 4 seed!

Roy, recruiting the whole country, is a 4 seed.

Is Donovan even in the tournament?

Ratso Izzo is a 7 seed!!

Self and Bo Ryan are the only non OAD/TAD stacks with an apparent prayer of beating the apparent OAD/TAD Nike lean stacks.

Face it. He is a genius and better than the rest, except for Coach K. And if he were to stay around as long as Coach K, he would probably exceed his win total, for the same reason Coach K and Knight exceeded Dean’s total wins. They coached in eras with longer seasons for similarly long numbers of season. And Dean exceeded Rupp for the same reason. And Rupp exceeded Allen for the same reason. If there were a way to index total wins for games played I suspect Allen would be the winningest coach all time still, though Rupp might be neck and neck.

    Cal?

He would definitely be .500 with this KU roster.

Cal apparently knows his limitations and unknowingly plays ringers at Memphis and anomalous talent stacks at UK to compensate.

    Fred?

Fred has already copied Bad Ball, while KU fans are still trying to argue why it won’t work!

    😄

  • @jaybate-1.0 perfect!

  • @JayHawkFanToo

It is so fun to see how reasoning from differing premises can lead to different conclusions. I grew up with this sort of discourse in my father’s house, so I have never found civil disagreement uncomfortable, or uninformative.

@HighEliteMajor knows I respect him (I can only infer gender from some remarks, I don’t claim to know for sure) and we learned a loooooooong time ago to agree and disagree comfortably. HEM, more than any other single poster I can recall saw the potential of building bridges across differences in order to enrich the sports discourse in online communities. I have always been very grateful HEM for that. Frankly, I don’t ever recall @HighEliteMajor bitch-slapping anyone. HEM thinks it through and states the affirmative of his position clearly, and points out logical inconsistencies he finds in other positions. And admits his own when they rarely surface. Can’t ask for more than that. To reiterate something I have noted in the past, the only lasting contribution I believe I have made to KU Basketball discourse is entering into a pact with HEM once upon a time to bridge differences. Opinions come and go. Positions shift and change as new information surfaces. Understanding grows. Experience adds wisdom. New blood adds vitality. But to me the cornerstone of an online community is the legacy of bridging differing opinions with respect and with a sense of a team searching for the path of understanding through thick and thin. HEM and I have agreed on so many things, and we have a good deal of agreement on the current team and where we think the future of basketball may be headed. Our disagreement over the merits (demerits) of Self’s coaching late this season are simply signals that there is more to be learned and discovered about what is happening.

I am similarly proud of the way you and I have found a path through the thicket of disagreement, though our search for a relationship remains quite young.

Online communication, contrary to what the gloom and doom crowd suggest, is a great, great, great step forward despite its perils.

When postal services were created in the 1700s, or so, they dramatically augmented communication. They greatly enabled the coordination of of political, military, and business activities. I am probably the only one that thinks this, but I believe the mail service hugely augmented the romance and evolution in loving relationships among persons by expanding the range and space for amorous and affectionate exploration of feelings among loving persons. Vices were enabled also, but all innovation (technical, infrastructure, etc.) and ensuing change triggers and inevitable calculus of new benefits and costs.

It took awhile for persons to learn to adapt their writing styles from that used for personally hand delivered letters, to letters delivered through the mails. Frequency changed length and content for interpersonal communication in writing.

The mails immediately fell prey to government spying and the spying of military and business competitors, and to spying of jealous lovers and so on.

But in retrospect, the net benefit of creating the mail services were so enormous that that costs and problems were utterly worth bearing.

It is a similar situation with interactive communication on line.

It has been one of the great satisfactions of my life to participate online with so many good board rats, and to find one in HEM willing to set an example of respectful disagreement and joy in learning from each other that could act as a cornerstone in the KU Basketball Legacy.

I have always learned as much from disagreeing with HEM, as from agreeing with HEM.

I believe the import of what we are all doing here now is laying a foundation of intelligent discourse in the online medium for the next 50 years of THE LEGACY.

I believe that you, @JayHawkFanToo, are contributing, too.

    I believe everyone is here.

    It is imperfect.

    It is human.

It is subject to virtue and subterfuge, and occasional stupidity.

It has all the beauty of human discourse and all the vagaries and misunderstandings that homo sapiens have wrestled with as they have muddled forwards for several hundred thousands of years of language usage.

There are certain instances, and realms, that one participates in, when one is most fortunate to have been alive.

The possibilities for abuse, and identity theft, and experimentation with discourse framing techniques, and set ups by special interest groups, and so on are endless even in this little online community.

But the net benefits are greater.

I am glad @HighEliteMajor is here.

I am glad everyone is here.

  • @jaybate-1.0

We are what used to be called left brain-right brain type of personalities, although I believe these terms are no longer used.

As an engineer I am the more analytical, more to the point type of person, while you are the more creative, deeper thinking type. One is not better than the other, we are simply wired differently and we both contribute in our own ways. Nothing wrong with that.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

    Thanks for weighing in.

I have always been fond of engineers.

    Hope others notice our exchange.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

I was just talking with a civil engineer (head of a city’s engineers) about the history of engineering and he has a keen interest in the Age of Regulation from about 1900 to 1915 or 1920. He is interested in comparing and contrasting the approach to and use of regulation in that era with the last 20 years. Kind of recall that you are not a civil engineer, but you seem to have a healthy curiosity, so might you have read a good book ever on the Age of Regulation with an engineering angle that I might suggest to this engineer as he commences some systematic inquiry into the legacy of his field?

  • @jaybate-1.0 That is all very nice of you to say. We all know that we are simply subjects here, and you are the master. I mentioned to a business friend of mine in San Diego who’s a KU fan, that I post on Ku hoops from time to time, and he asked me, “Do you know that jaybate guy?” I said yea, kind of …

But yes, we do disagree on this item at the moment. Perhaps time will provide more clarity. I remember a very detailed discussion with you over the course of many months/years about the propriety of EJ playing PG. I believe I finally conceded that one to you, but my memory might be a bit hazy. I’m very hopeful that I can provide a well drafted concession speech in a few weeks.

And did you just suggest that I might be a woman? I would have hoped that my clearly sexist remarks of the past, and during in-game chats, would have answered that. But nonetheless, where’s that picture of the Texas girl? I miss her.

  • @HighEliteMajor Do you mean @jaybate-1.0 and I agreed on the EJ point guard topic? Finally, something he and I can agree on, lol!

  • @jaybate-1.0 “Opinions come and go. Positions shift and change as new information surfaces. Understanding grows. Experience adds wisdom. New blood adds vitality.”

Such is the case when the “Self is a Poopy head for not playing Cliff more minutes, crowd” died down when Cliff would get four fouls in 10 minutes two games in a row. I still don’t understand HEM blaming Self for Brannen’s shooting slump. Maybe it was always that he wanted Self to overlook his poor ball handling skills and toreador defense so that he could shoot himself out of his 0 - 80 slump. Like I said before, I can be a sarcastic SOB. Like the beautiful Olivia Wilde, AKA crimsonorblue22 once said, Casting blame is such a negative commentary. These are unpaid young men that are banged up, giving their all for KU. Devonte cried in the locker room after the game while Kelly expresses his love for Kansas at every interview. It is hard to win a national championship every 20 years. Sometimes other teams have better cards to play. Coach is a better card player but it is hard to beat a Royal flush.

  • @HighEliteMajor

    HOWLING!!!

I have always assumed you were a male, but when one’s memory begins to be a palimpsest of sorts, because of health issues, well, discretion is the better part of something or other. 🙂

  • @jaybate-1.0

As a matter of fact I am a Civil Engineer although in the recent past I have concentrated on the development of software for Infra-Structure and Asset Management for Public Agencies and I am also currently working on a proposal to build a computer controlled servo-hydraulic testing system similar to the one I built for the USAF/NASA for use in the the Space Shuttle program.

  • @jaybate-1.0 Yes, I have noticed. Upvote to come.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

That’s awesome. Congratulations on both activities. You guys make us all able to do what we want to do.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Cool,

I once worked with NASA on a Space Station project. We had a great technology but they wanted us to buy all the equipment to test it-Like G - Force simulators etc. Long story short it would have cost us over 100k up front resulting in a big net loss IF they even used our stuff.

We turned them down and they said “Don’t you want to be able to say your equipment is in space.” I told them, “We aren’t selling tang here. High G forces and weightless environments aren’t much of a market for us.”

But I still have the poster they gave me hanging in my son’s room.

  • @JayhawkRock78

Classic story. You made my day. This is the human side of business that so many lose sight of.

  • First time I have smiled since KU’s loss this past weekend. How did anyone think HEM was a girl???

  • @HighEliteMajor Have no fear, I always knew you’re a man 🙂 Oh, and this is coming from a girl 🙂 Grew up with men, and never could get the remote control. Dad & brothers taught me a little about sports for ALL four season - so I wouldn’t make them miserable watching sports. Was so happy once football season was over thinking “finally I get to watch my shows”. Wrong. Basketball season had arrived. Then Tennis, baseball, etc etc etc. Guess that turned out alright as I do enjoy watching sports - not very knowledgeable but thanks to you all, I’m having fun learning. Yes HEM, I learn from you too 🙂

  • @Statmachine

Well, I’m sorry, but I thought I made clear that I thought HEM was male, but that I always try to err on the side of not assuming in these sorts of instances.

    Rock Chalk!

  • @jaybate-1.0 I hope you are right dude. I hope you are. I really had to let my expectations go after the ISU loss. The whole team is injured.

I know @HighEliteMajor made a reference to our trey shooting taking a precipitous drop after Coach called it BS. I dont think that was the only factor. Psychology alone did not cause Brannen to drop from 50% on treys to 15%. That goes for all the other players too. Injury and psychology both played a HUGE part.

For everyone who reads this, I am not giving up hope that KU can make a run, I am just letting my expectations of such run fall away. I wont expect a single win, but I will hope KU proves me wrong. I do hope.

@jaybate-1.0 You were right about your win/loss prediction at the start of the year. Looking back on that prophetic vision, did you think for one second that KU would make a deep NCAA run? I realize thats quite different from all the empirical data we have now. Now we have seen how KU can win games and how they can lose games.
I would love nothing more than to see KU prove me wrong and beat the tar out of their first two opponents by 4 points each wink and then move on to do the same the following weekend!

  • Like all readers here, i do pay special attention to the two (of the bigger group) of board heavyweights, HEM and Jaybate, and really try and understand the intelligent and informed lenghty posts that both put out regularly. It it fun to try and learn more, and delve deeper into the team and game we all love. Vaguely reminds me of the movie platoon - the young charlie Sheen being mentored by the different world views of the hard realist sgt Barnes and the more spiritual hopeful sgt Elias (now i know that movie didnt end well !)

I myself have been leaning thus past month to a myitkyina kind of veiwpoint and truly hope that jaybate is the more prophetic one

  • Tonight and until every last 7’ footer signs with a program I need everyone to say a little prayer that we land 1 or 2 guys that fit HCBS hi low offence so we don’t have to continue to watch BAD BALL!!! Please dear Lord send us some help on the front court!!! Someone that can catch an inlet pass back to the basket turn and shoot! Some one that played volleyball and soccer until they were 7’ foot and too tall to play either sport. Someone that can learn HCBS ball in one short summer and be ready to dominate the big12 and stay for 2-3 years… AMEN

  • @Statmachine

Nothing succeeds like success; a run to the Elite 8 would certainly enhance our chances of getting a quality big.

  • @Statmachine

I have copied and pasted your prayer into the rest of my iPrayer that I send out daily by microwave to the universe in hopes of one day making the “right kind” of first contact with whatever intelligent life may be out there. My worry is that “House of Cards” will get there before my iPrayer and earth will be scheduled for sterilization by NOMAD. 🙂

  • @Statmachine Self was forced to improve as a coach this year. We will see the benefits of this years trials moving forward.

  • @Statmachine Great idea! I’ll offer up some Hail Marys - being the Lent season, that should help, huh? Thanks for the laugh.

  • @Blown

Great insight on your part. I believe Self put himself outside his comfort zone from the start of the season. At 26-8, a title, and a two seed, its been quite a ride. .765 is not where Self wants to stay, but its mighty fine for second youngest team in the country playing the toughest schedule in the country without a rim protector 5 and without anyone that could play back to the basket.

    Rock Chalk!

  • @HawksWin That should do the trick!

  • @jaybate-1.0 …and for the first time in several years, Self knew what the make up of his team would look like the following year and I think his coaching evolved, in part, because of that. He went into 2011-2012 knowing what to expect of his team because of all the returnees: Tyshawn, Elijah, TRob, Withey, & Releford. With KY & Teahan he was able to shape them into a championship caliber team. 2012-2013 as well as 2013-2014 presented many new variables going into the season, but Self had his Interior Prime Time Players and the tools necessary to play his hi-lo game, His bread & butter. So he was able to stick with what worked in the past.

Fast forward to 2014-15 Self was faced with the loss of his PG Thaarpe as well as Joel, whom he expected to be around for two years. Missing out on Turner was the final piece and catalyst for Self’s innovative 2014-2015 year. With the exception of the Wild Card who is Kelly Oubre, imho, Self quickly recognized that the pieces of puzzle for this year, will be the very same pieces he is working with next year in 2015-2016. I don’t recall a major strategic and tactical change this great in all of the time Self has been our guy at Kansas. For lack of a better expression, and to borrow your clever phraseology, I have the sense that he has put the entire damn team in a toughening box for a full season.

  • @Blown HCBS has had to go out side of his comfort zone to win games. He has had to adapt to players and utilize their strengths to win games due to his drive to win. I am sure he would like to go back to his comfort zone and his bread and butter! This video drives the point home that he is not changing any time soon.

    .

He tells them they are going to play his way (just like he is doing now). They say he is like a mean step dad lol. I sure hope he recruits some bigs so we can get back to winning by 20pts and just killing our opponents again! Get back to a defense first mentality playing hard every possession and letting the buckets fall. Then maybe I can enjoy watching the regular season again! Maybe I wont get as drunk during the games either???

  • @Statmachine without the darkness, can one truly appreciate the value of light? Without failure, can one truly understand success? Adversity is a good thing, my friend. Next season will be much more enjoyable for you in contrast to the emotional enjoyment of this season. I hear Kansas has the most spoiled and whiny fan base when I’m In varying regions of the U.S. Maybe we need this.

  • @HighEliteMajor Your gender was not in doubt when you revealed your name on the other site. Glad to have you here. I too am learning from you.

  • @Shanghai_RCJH I wonder if my gender is in doubt? 😉

  • @Blown

I have known failure and success.

I truly believe I would have been just as good without the failure, maybe even better, because I wouldn’t have wasted so much time and energy recovering from the wounds of failing.

It is perhaps good to fail once at something, preferably something small and inconsequential, to become clear that performing well enough to win is the goal. It only takes one lesson IMHO.

The reason to avoid losing is that any outcome is a risk to be habituated, so avoid losing like the plague.

Winning is in large part a habit.

The part that one cannot do without is struggle.

It is struggle I have always learned from, not failure.

    Get a degree in struggle.

And you can learn all you need to know about struggle by learning the difference between struggling effectively and ineffectively. Just examine the difference between getting an A, or a B. The difference in struggling between an A and an F is obvious. It requires no study. Studying the difference in struggle between an A and B, or if you are not to sharp, between a C and a D, is endlessly helpful. Human beings recognize the big gradations almost intuitively. Its the fine gradations they need recurring lessons with.

If you can win every game by one point, or more, do so.

leave losing to those that don’t care about winning.

Embrace struggle not as an end, but a phase of every process.

And learn to shorten the struggle phase as much as possible.

Lengthen the highly productive flow as much as possible.

  • @jaybate-1.0 really good, know a lil about struggle. Wanted to share a note I wrote down during a church message last sun about suffering. Suffer for a purpose.

  • @jaybate-1.0 I will forever remember the day I changed my perception of failure and struggle. Your semantics are more appropriate for the picture I was painting. Thank you.
