For Lulu

  • @HighEliteMajor Do you mean @jaybate-1.0 and I agreed on the EJ point guard topic? Finally, something he and I can agree on, lol!

  • @jaybate-1.0 “Opinions come and go. Positions shift and change as new information surfaces. Understanding grows. Experience adds wisdom. New blood adds vitality.”

Such is the case when the “Self is a Poopy head for not playing Cliff more minutes, crowd” died down when Cliff would get four fouls in 10 minutes two games in a row. I still don’t understand HEM blaming Self for Brannen’s shooting slump. Maybe it was always that he wanted Self to overlook his poor ball handling skills and toreador defense so that he could shoot himself out of his 0 - 80 slump. Like I said before, I can be a sarcastic SOB. Like the beautiful Olivia Wilde, AKA crimsonorblue22 once said, Casting blame is such a negative commentary. These are unpaid young men that are banged up, giving their all for KU. Devonte cried in the locker room after the game while Kelly expresses his love for Kansas at every interview. It is hard to win a national championship every 20 years. Sometimes other teams have better cards to play. Coach is a better card player but it is hard to beat a Royal flush.

  • @HighEliteMajor

    HOWLING!!!

I have always assumed you were a male, but when one’s memory begins to be a palimpsest of sorts, because of health issues, well, discretion is the better part of something or other. 🙂

  • @jaybate-1.0

As a matter of fact I am a Civil Engineer although in the recent past I have concentrated on the development of software for Infra-Structure and Asset Management for Public Agencies and I am also currently working on a proposal to build a computer controlled servo-hydraulic testing system similar to the one I built for the USAF/NASA for use in the the Space Shuttle program.

  • @jaybate-1.0 Yes, I have noticed. Upvote to come.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

That’s awesome. Congratulations on both activities. You guys make us all able to do what we want to do.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Cool,

I once worked with NASA on a Space Station project. We had a great technology but they wanted us to buy all the equipment to test it-Like G - Force simulators etc. Long story short it would have cost us over 100k up front resulting in a big net loss IF they even used our stuff.

We turned them down and they said “Don’t you want to be able to say your equipment is in space.” I told them, “We aren’t selling tang here. High G forces and weightless environments aren’t much of a market for us.”

But I still have the poster they gave me hanging in my son’s room.

  • @JayhawkRock78

Classic story. You made my day. This is the human side of business that so many lose sight of.

  • First time I have smiled since KU’s loss this past weekend. How did anyone think HEM was a girl???

  • @HighEliteMajor Have no fear, I always knew you’re a man 🙂 Oh, and this is coming from a girl 🙂 Grew up with men, and never could get the remote control. Dad & brothers taught me a little about sports for ALL four season - so I wouldn’t make them miserable watching sports. Was so happy once football season was over thinking “finally I get to watch my shows”. Wrong. Basketball season had arrived. Then Tennis, baseball, etc etc etc. Guess that turned out alright as I do enjoy watching sports - not very knowledgeable but thanks to you all, I’m having fun learning. Yes HEM, I learn from you too 🙂

  • @Statmachine

Well, I’m sorry, but I thought I made clear that I thought HEM was male, but that I always try to err on the side of not assuming in these sorts of instances.

    Rock Chalk!

  • @jaybate-1.0 I hope you are right dude. I hope you are. I really had to let my expectations go after the ISU loss. The whole team is injured.

I know @HighEliteMajor made a reference to our trey shooting taking a precipitous drop after Coach called it BS. I dont think that was the only factor. Psychology alone did not cause Brannen to drop from 50% on treys to 15%. That goes for all the other players too. Injury and psychology both played a HUGE part.

For everyone who reads this, I am not giving up hope that KU can make a run, I am just letting my expectations of such run fall away. I wont expect a single win, but I will hope KU proves me wrong. I do hope.

@jaybate-1.0 You were right about your win/loss prediction at the start of the year. Looking back on that prophetic vision, did you think for one second that KU would make a deep NCAA run? I realize thats quite different from all the empirical data we have now. Now we have seen how KU can win games and how they can lose games.
I would love nothing more than to see KU prove me wrong and beat the tar out of their first two opponents by 4 points each wink and then move on to do the same the following weekend!

    @DinarHawk

Isn’t that the case with any team in Madness?

    Shooting slump equals quick out.

Everyone needs to stop holding Self and KU to different standards than other elite coaches and programs. Self hasn’t even had his first Cal trip to lose in the first round of the NIT! And this team has lost way more to injury and suspension and started with less talent than that UK team started with.

Coach K has had a bunch of early exits.

Fred Dread, the Mayor of Ames has never won a title or a ring! He is just plain potential nothing else.

Pitino has been up and down. Rick, as good as he is, with 4 footers is a 4 seed!

Roy, recruiting the whole country, is a 4 seed.

Is Donovan even in the tournament?

Ratso Izzo is a 7 seed!!

Self and Bo Ryan are the only non OAD/TAD stacks with an apparent prayer of beating the apparent OAD/TAD Nike lean stacks.

Face it. He is a genius and better than the rest, except for Coach K. And if he were to stay around as long as Coach K, he would probably exceed his win total, for the same reason Coach K and Knight exceeded Dean’s total wins. They coached in eras with longer seasons for similarly long numbers of season. And Dean exceeded Rupp for the same reason. And Rupp exceeded Allen for the same reason. If there were a way to index total wins for games played I suspect Allen would be the winningest coach all time still, though Rupp might be neck and neck.

    Cal?

He would definitely be .500 with this KU roster.

Cal apparently knows his limitations and unknowingly plays ringers at Memphis and anomalous talent stacks at UK to compensate.

    Fred?

Fred has already copied Bad Ball, while KU fans are still trying to argue why it won’t work!

    😄

WHen you are right, you are right! And, you are right! Coach Cal might even be sub .500 with this KU team. I read the other day about Cal’s supposed “coaching genius” PFffffft! What a croc of stinky stuff!

  • Like all readers here, i do pay special attention to the two (of the bigger group) of board heavyweights, HEM and Jaybate, and really try and understand the intelligent and informed lenghty posts that both put out regularly. It it fun to try and learn more, and delve deeper into the team and game we all love. Vaguely reminds me of the movie platoon - the young charlie Sheen being mentored by the different world views of the hard realist sgt Barnes and the more spiritual hopeful sgt Elias (now i know that movie didnt end well !)

I myself have been leaning thus past month to a myitkyina kind of veiwpoint and truly hope that jaybate is the more prophetic one

  • Tonight and until every last 7’ footer signs with a program I need everyone to say a little prayer that we land 1 or 2 guys that fit HCBS hi low offence so we don’t have to continue to watch BAD BALL!!! Please dear Lord send us some help on the front court!!! Someone that can catch an inlet pass back to the basket turn and shoot! Some one that played volleyball and soccer until they were 7’ foot and too tall to play either sport. Someone that can learn HCBS ball in one short summer and be ready to dominate the big12 and stay for 2-3 years… AMEN

  • @Statmachine

Nothing succeeds like success; a run to the Elite 8 would certainly enhance our chances of getting a quality big.

  • @Statmachine

I have copied and pasted your prayer into the rest of my iPrayer that I send out daily by microwave to the universe in hopes of one day making the “right kind” of first contact with whatever intelligent life may be out there. My worry is that “House of Cards” will get there before my iPrayer and earth will be scheduled for sterilization by NOMAD. 🙂

  • @Statmachine Self was forced to improve as a coach this year. We will see the benefits of this years trials moving forward.

  • @Statmachine Great idea! I’ll offer up some Hail Marys - being the Lent season, that should help, huh? Thanks for the laugh.

  • @Blown

Great insight on your part. I believe Self put himself outside his comfort zone from the start of the season. At 26-8, a title, and a two seed, its been quite a ride. .765 is not where Self wants to stay, but its mighty fine for second youngest team in the country playing the toughest schedule in the country without a rim protector 5 and without anyone that could play back to the basket.

    Rock Chalk!

  • @HawksWin That should do the trick!

  • @jaybate-1.0 …and for the first time in several years, Self knew what the make up of his team would look like the following year and I think his coaching evolved, in part, because of that. He went into 2011-2012 knowing what to expect of his team because of all the returnees: Tyshawn, Elijah, TRob, Withey, & Releford. With KY & Teahan he was able to shape them into a championship caliber team. 2012-2013 as well as 2013-2014 presented many new variables going into the season, but Self had his Interior Prime Time Players and the tools necessary to play his hi-lo game, His bread & butter. So he was able to stick with what worked in the past.

Fast forward to 2014-15 Self was faced with the loss of his PG Thaarpe as well as Joel, whom he expected to be around for two years. Missing out on Turner was the final piece and catalyst for Self’s innovative 2014-2015 year. With the exception of the Wild Card who is Kelly Oubre, imho, Self quickly recognized that the pieces of puzzle for this year, will be the very same pieces he is working with next year in 2015-2016. I don’t recall a major strategic and tactical change this great in all of the time Self has been our guy at Kansas. For lack of a better expression, and to borrow your clever phraseology, I have the sense that he has put the entire damn team in a toughening box for a full season.

  • @Blown HCBS has had to go out side of his comfort zone to win games. He has had to adapt to players and utilize their strengths to win games due to his drive to win. I am sure he would like to go back to his comfort zone and his bread and butter! This video drives the point home that he is not changing any time soon.

    .

He tells them they are going to play his way (just like he is doing now). They say he is like a mean step dad lol. I sure hope he recruits some bigs so we can get back to winning by 20pts and just killing our opponents again! Get back to a defense first mentality playing hard every possession and letting the buckets fall. Then maybe I can enjoy watching the regular season again! Maybe I wont get as drunk during the games either???

  • @Statmachine without the darkness, can one truly appreciate the value of light? Without failure, can one truly understand success? Adversity is a good thing, my friend. Next season will be much more enjoyable for you in contrast to the emotional enjoyment of this season. I hear Kansas has the most spoiled and whiny fan base when I’m In varying regions of the U.S. Maybe we need this.

  • @HighEliteMajor Your gender was not in doubt when you revealed your name on the other site. Glad to have you here. I too am learning from you.

  • @Shanghai_RCJH I wonder if my gender is in doubt? 😉

  • @Blown

I have known failure and success.

I truly believe I would have been just as good without the failure, maybe even better, because I wouldn’t have wasted so much time and energy recovering from the wounds of failing.

It is perhaps good to fail once at something, preferably something small and inconsequential, to become clear that performing well enough to win is the goal. It only takes one lesson IMHO.

The reason to avoid losing is that any outcome is a risk to be habituated, so avoid losing like the plague.

Winning is in large part a habit.

The part that one cannot do without is struggle.

It is struggle I have always learned from, not failure.

    Get a degree in struggle.

And you can learn all you need to know about struggle by learning the difference between struggling effectively and ineffectively. Just examine the difference between getting an A, or a B. The difference in struggling between an A and an F is obvious. It requires no study. Studying the difference in struggle between an A and B, or if you are not to sharp, between a C and a D, is endlessly helpful. Human beings recognize the big gradations almost intuitively. Its the fine gradations they need recurring lessons with.

If you can win every game by one point, or more, do so.

leave losing to those that don’t care about winning.

Embrace struggle not as an end, but a phase of every process.

And learn to shorten the struggle phase as much as possible.

Lengthen the highly productive flow as much as possible.

  • @jaybate-1.0 really good, know a lil about struggle. Wanted to share a note I wrote down during a church message last sun about suffering. Suffer for a purpose.

  • @jaybate-1.0 I will forever remember the day I changed my perception of failure and struggle. Your semantics are more appropriate for the picture I was painting. Thank you.
