And so it begins -- Players won't play without promised NIL $

  • Didn’t take too long for players to refuse to play and start suing coaches for not being compensated as “promised.” College sports are officially super ugly.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk I hear ya - -we all saw this coming , just destroying College Sports- -total BS

  • As much as I’m not a fan of NIL, I don’t blame the players here very much. It has turned college sports basically into a job, so my question is how people here would keep doing their job and going to work if they stopped being paid? I know I wouldn’t keep showing up to work if my employers weren’t paying me.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 It IS a job. A job that these highly talented and greedy teenagers know that they are calling all the shots. The NIL must die or college sports will.

This is my point. Regardless of anyone’s personal feelings about NIL, it’s not going away and it’s here to stay so schools and coaches have to adapt to this new reality that players are now employees and sports has become their jobs. When someone is doing a job for an agreed upon amount of money and doesn’t get paid, they won’t keep doing that job. If your boss came up to you and said, “nuleafjhawk, the company is financially struggling right now so we can’t pay you any salary for the next 6 months, but we still expect you to come in and do your job everyday like you are being paid.”, I guarantee you wouldn’t show up and do your job for free for the next 6 months.

I tell my athletes all the time that as much as I love coaching them, I also don’t do it for free and that if my school district stopped paying my stipends for coaching, I would not do it anymore.

  • Good on them. If Hamilton promised them money and didn’t deliver, that’s on him not the players.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 isnt it more like “nuleaf, we cant pay you as much as we said, but all the food is still free, as is the awesome room, and the student body will still adore you, and you still get to play for a hall of fame coach that gets people in the League”

  • I don’t even know where to start with all this, but this could spread in so many ugly ways. It’s only a matter of time before this is regulated more closely by somebody. It has to be. This clearly isn’t NIL money. This is under the table. NIL money should be accounted for in a signed contract.

Simply, there should be no “promises.” No contract? Take your business elsewhere.

But anyway, no matter your opinion about paying nor not paying players, the Wild Wild West must be tamed!

  • @rockchalkjayhawk it could be a promise of future NIL that didnt materialize?

And yeah, seems like thats on the kids to get it in writing or accept it was never a sure thing.

  • Feel bad for the ageless one here. Imagine if KUs boosters were flaky and Self was stuck squeezing them and encouraging the kids that the money was coming. What a drag.

Yup. What a crappy position to put any coach in.

And remember, NIL money isn’t “pay for play”. Players aren’t supposed to complain about hustling butt but not getting paid.

And it’s not supposed to be money for just being recruited.

Outside of the court, it’s services rendered. We give you money and you provide a service for us at market rate.

But whatever. It’s just crazy. Player revolts are a bad thing.
