Bush League
-
Resent events involving disruptive fans have lead me to remember a term we used back in the day to describe this type of behavior, which is associated with certain schools and their fans. The term is Bush League. For those of you unfamiliar with it let me enlighten you ala Jeff Foxworthy;
You know you’re a Bush League school if you count the players steps to the bench after he fouls out.
You know you’re a Bush League school if your fans have signs that personally attack opposing players by name.
You know you’re a Bush League school if there are empty seats behind the home team bench.
You know you’re a Bush League school if fans don’t applaud a truly good basketball effort or good sportsmanship by the opposing team.
You know you’re a Bush League school if you don’t have a real band that plays during time outs.
You know you’re a Bush League school if you throw stuff on the court when you think the ref made a bad call.
You know you’re a Bush League school if throw stuff on opposing players when they go on or off the court.
You know you’re a Bush League school if you spit on anyone.
You know you’re a Bush League school if you storm the court. (Don’t act like you’ve never won a game)
You know you’re a Bush League school if your coach has to take the microphone to reprimand the fans.
You know you’re a Bush League school if your coach should to take the microphone to reprimand the fans, but doesn’t.
You are probably a Bush League school if your mascot is a feline.

Hey… I played 5 years in the Busch League. It was awesome (for that period in my life when I liked to drink free beer). A softball league sponsored by the beer companies. A free keg of beer provided after every game for both teams to share.
This was before the big push on DUIs. Just imagine a Busch League today? Everyone driving home (or to a bar) drunk after softball… sponsored by the beer distributors. Those days are gone, and rightly so.

Same here. In St Louis there was a Busch League for touch football teams, made up primarily of teams from large apartment complexes. It was very competitive for touch-actually rough because there were a lot of former collegiate athletes playing-mostly kids in our twenties. We had at least two refs on the field. After the games we went to a bar at the center of the complex where a DJ played tunes (Donna Summer era)- And because so many young athletic males were there-the ladies would be there too. We all had to sign releases that Busch could film us and use it in commercials-alas I never got that modeling contract.

I’m so stupid, I thought Bush was a Texas term because of the Bush’s that live down there and the thread was about Texas “shorthorns”, then after reading Mohawk I decided it was a comment about Kansas State, then I find out its about Beer. The kicker here is that I used to live in St Louis as well and everything is beer there. The Landing.

@KU-Flyer Thats funny! Cuz, I didnt know what the crap it meant either. I kinda had the same train of thought you did. But Im not from St Looey, Im from KCK

Here is one definition of Bush League and here is another…

@KU-Flyer Ah Lacledes Landing: Spent a lot of time at Muddy Waters back in the day.

@JayhawkRock78 Discovered Lacledes Landing while TDY to Scott AFB for a week back in the 80’s. We went every nite for dinner and a little partying or watch the Cards. We had a designated driver (AF don’t take kindly to DUI"s) but still kept the partying part to a low key. Still had fun.

I lived there from 79-81. Must have had an angel on my wing driving home from there to South County most weekends.

I might add a few to your excellent post @Mohawk
You’re bush league if you boo every call against your team.
You’re bush league if you have to have the scoreboard tell you to make noise. (please tell me KU doesn’t do that!)
You’re bush league if you have NIT banners hanging in your gym unless they’re from before 1960 or so when it was still a big tournament.
You’re bush league if you can walk up on game time and put a toy in a barrel for a free ticket. This happened at an LSU game I was at earlier this year, although the toys were for a good cause.
You’re bush league if we here at KUBuckets say you’re bush league. We have the final say.
