Jayhawks in the pros

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 judging by his nba career, he needed more than 2. Jmo. 🤷♀

  • Saw this list of Jayhawks in the NBA or G League this year. thought i’d pass it along. missing anybody?

Ochai Agbaji – Utah Jazz Ochai has played in about two-thirds of Utah’s games. He is averaging 13.7 minutes and 4 points a game. He has not had much of an impact in Salt Lake this season. SLC Dunk had an interesting write-up about Abaji’s season up to early January after he had a nice four-game stretch. With Utah’s trade deadline deal to acquire Russel Westbrook and two other players, the resulting roster shake-up could free up more playing time for Agbaji.

Udoka Azubuike – Utah Jazz (now with Phoenix) t The good news for Dok is he has played in more NBA games this season than in either of his first two seasons. The bad news, it looks like Dok will be looking for a new team next season. According to reporting by SLC Dunk, Utah has declined the option on his contract for the 2023-24 season and he will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. Dok has played in only 20 of the Jazz first 56 games and he is averaging only 4.7 minutes, 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds a game.

Christian Braun – Denver Nuggets Christian is seeing more time on the court than Dok and Ochai. He has played in 50 games and is averaging 14.7 minutes and 4.2 points per game. His coach, Michael Malone has expressed a desire to get Braun more playing time, but the current makeup of the team has prevented it and the makeup of the team changed Thursday. The Nuggets shipped Bones Hyland to the Clippers for two draft picks. With Hyland moving to Los Angeles, Christian should see more playing time.

Joel Embiid – Philadelphia 76ers Embiid continues to be a dominant force for the 76ers. This season he is averaging 33.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. The Sixers currently sit third in the Eastern Conference just ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It looks like Joel will be with Philidelphia for several more years, having signed a four-year super max contract extension keeping him in Philidelphia through at least the 2025-26 season and if he chooses to exercise his player option through the 2026-27 season.

Devonte’ Graham – San Antonio Spurs Devonte’ was traded to the Spurs just before the trade deadline Thursday. Graham has appeared in 53 games for the Pelicans this season, but he has seen a significant dip in minutes played compared to last season. Last season he played in 76 games and averaged 26.8 minutes per game. This season he is averaging only 15.3 minutes per game. This seems to be fine with some Pelicas’ fans as Graham has struggled as of late and people are wanting to see more of Kira Lewis Jr. With his move to the lowly Spurs, it will be interesting to see Graham get more playing time.

Marcus Morris – Los Angeles Clippers Marcus now in his 11th NBA season and 3rd full season with the Clippers is coming off a recent 4-game absence due to injury. When available, Marcus is a consistent starter having started the last 104 games he has played and 152 of the 180 games played for the Clippers. This season, Marcus is averaging 12 points and 4 assists in just under 29 minutes per game.

Markieff Morris – Dallas Mavericks Markieff may not have been a big name in the big trade between Brooklyn and Dallas, that goes to Kyrie Irving, but he sure seems happy to be part of the trade. What did Markieff think about the trade? Well of course he let everyone know before his first game with the Mavs Wednesday.

“I was just hoping I was getting traded with [Kyrie], I just wanted somewhere I could have the opportunity to play. … just a lot going on, man. I just want to play basketball.”

With Brooklyn, he played in only 27 games this season averaging 10 minutes, 3.6 points, and 2.2 rebounds per game, all well below his career averages.

Svi Mykhailiuk – Charlotte Hornets (now with Boston) There were rumors Svi was headed to Portland, but instead, he is headed to the Hornets at the trade deadline. Svi is on his sixth team in five seasons. So far this season, Svi has sat deep on the bench for the New York Knicks. He hopes to find more playing time in Charlotte. With the Knicks, he has found his way into 13 games this season averaging about 3 minutes per game and 1.6 points per game. Looking at his stat line, there is a bright spot, when he has the opportunity to shoot from behind the arc, he is hitting 60% of his shots. Just don’t look too close, he has only had 10 attempts.

Kelly Oubre Jr. – Charlotte Hornets Kelly was having the best season of his career through the first 35 games of the season. He had started 30 of those games and was averaging better than 20 points a game. Then in early January, he underwent surgery on his left hand to repair a torn ligament that he had been dealing with the entire season. He will be joined by former Jayhawk teammate Svi Mykhailiuk on the active roster when he returns sometime in the next few weeks.

Andrew Wiggins – Golden State Warriors Wiggins has missed significant time due to injury and illness for the first time in his career. From early December to early January, he missed 15 games and since returning he has struggled to regain his early-season form. If you look at his stat lines for this season and last season you do not see a drop-off, but that view just masks the great start he had to the season. Prior to his 15-game absence, he was averaging 19 points and 5 rebounds per gain, and he was shooting 45 percent from 3-point range. Since his return, those numbers have dipped to 12.4 points and 4 rebounds per game and 22.7 percent from behind the 3-point line. If the Warriors are going to right the ship and make another deep playoff push, they need Andrew to be early seasons Andrew.

Devon Dotson — G League’s Capitol City Go-Go Devon has been bouncing between the association and G League for the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards since declaring for the 2020 draft and going undrafted. Devon started this season with the Wizards, but was waived on January 17 and immediately signed by the Wizards G League team, the Go-Go, on January 19. Devon has played in 13 games this season for the Go-Go, averaging 29 minutes, 13 points, and 5 assists per game, including shooting 39.3% from behind the arc.

Marcus Garret — G League’s Sioux Falls Sky Force Injuries have been the story of Marcus Garret’s professional career so far. He impressed the Miami Heat enough to sign him twice to two-way contracts, but both times wrist injuries spoiled the deal. In October he was waived by the Heat after his latest injury and on October 24 he rejoined the Skyforce, Miami’s G League affiliate. Now healed, he is playing again. In 16 games he is averaging 25 minutes and 9.7 points per game. Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinal has a nice story (I do not think it is behind a paywall) about Marcus and his journey with the Heat and Skyforce.

  • Ha, it is missing a few…

    Gradey Dick / Raptors

Jalen Wilson / Nets – Two way contract.

    Dok is with Phoenix

    Cheick Diallo / Miami

  • Thanks for compiling.

    Svi is with Celtics.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk Great work over all. But Marcus Garrett is now signed with mhp riesen ludwigsburg in Germany.

  • Marcus went overseas? Wow. Finally healthy, thought he’d have a shot.

  • OK, did a quick search to read more about Marcus…and saw this!! what the hell? Gotta be fake right? (you’ll wanna read)

Seemed real enough, I just hadn’t checked after I saw he signed with them. He was already removed from their team roster page.

  • I believe it, not surprised. He’d be lucky to get clean and another chance. He could make some bucks and get a better life! Sad.

  • Really don’t see a problem with smoking marijuana as long as you are doing your job.

  • @BShark Morally sure. Legally it causes issues in Kansas/Germany.

  • @BShark not legal there and he couldn’t physically keep up. Choices

  • @BShark said in Jayhawks in the pros:

It’s illegal for recreational use in Germany so that would be a problem for Garrett. That was also just one of several issues it sounds like with Garrett.

I know people who love to claim weed isn’t addictive, but if you can’t give it up for a few months because it’s illegal for recreational use in the country you’re going to be playing in, you might have an addiction problem.

I also find it very difficult to have any sympathy for Garrett in this situation because it sounds like he did zero research about what life is like for pro basketball players in Europe.

This whole thing just sounds weird. Smoking weed? Ok, I get that. Seems like drinking water for a ton of athletes.

Out of shape and lazy? Don’t by that at all. That sound like Marcus Garret to anybody? Weird.

If he’s smoking that much weed now, then I absolutely believe that because one of the potential side effects of smoking that much weed is losing your motivation and drive to do things. It’s also possible that his lung capacity isn’t as good any more because of how much he smokes.

I obviously don’t know the specifics of what’s going on with Garrett here, but making an educated guess based of what I’ve seen from friends who chose to be stoners and smoke a lot of weed because that’s what looks like is happening with Garrett here.

  • Sadly, I believe it too.

  • Gradey got some run tonight. 16 pts, 4-6 from deep.

  • Jalen had 33 pts in his G league game.

  • Oubre has been doing well in Phila. They are doing much better with Harden, Maxey is on fire.

  • Just saw on another thread that Oubre was hit by a car, terrible accident. I hope he recovers fully.

  • Popovich must not like Devonte too much. He’s not playing at all.

    Glad DTae got paid.

  • Jalen and CB currently guarding each other in the nuggets nets game

@rcjhdraft did u see that coast to coast throwdown? https://x.com/BleacherReport/status/1735514245352059161?s=20

lol, pretty awesome , and you see who is trailing on that play ? -Jalen Wilson lol

  • Today it’s Jalen vs Och

  • Watching Bulls Spurs tonight and this Spurs team is awful and DG is just sitting on the bench never getting any playing time. Not sure what happened to him, but if he can’t find the floor on this Spurs team it probably means his NBA days are over.

  • @wissox Probably, but NBA contracts are fully guaranteed. He gets to ride the bench making excellent wages. I love Devonte, but his game is inefficient.

  • Dok balling out for the suns

  • @wissox Dtae got a dui after last season, I think that had something to do with it. Not his first. JMO.

  • Marcus, Oubre and Embiid started last night for Sixers. I wonder if that’s happened before — 3 (or more) Jayhawks starting for an NBA team.

  • @HoraceZontal 🫶🥰🌾🌾🌾💙❤

  • @Crimsonorblue22 ooooh, yuck. Bad stuff and I would rather he not drive drunk again instead of playing basketball.

  • Re Devontae and the bench, I was curious as well. I did some poking around and found this thoughtful analysis from a Reddit thread:

“Samlet 5 days ago IMO Spurs know they’d be a better team with Graham getting all the non-Tre minutes at point guard. But the Spurs are prioritizing winning in the long term. So they believe getting Branham reps at point guard (after the Sochan experiment was uh… interesting) is more important than having Graham be the 30-40th ranked point guard he is, and getting guys some easier looks and us a few more wins, but then our guys aren’t getting as many creation reps.

I personally would rather have 48 minutes of real point guard play so our guys can play in a functional offense, but I understand why PATFO is prioritizing Branham with our upcoming roster crunch.

Next year we likely have two top-10 draft picks coming in. So we have Wemby, Devin, Keldon, Sochan, Collins, Tre Jones, our top-5 pick, and the Raptors pick who likely have 8 rotation spots pretty secure.

There are only so many minutes and reps to go around. So it’ll be important to know as much as we can about Branham by the end of this season, so going forward we know whether to keep prioritizing his development (~25 min a game) or if he’s looking more like a 15 min./game bench player.

The Spurs feel like that’s more important than giving Graham 20 minutes/game and getting a better offense/a few more wins, but then not giving Branham (along with our other young players) as many reps and then as a result not knowing as much about their capabilities.“

  • @HoraceZontal that sucks! Seems very unfair.

  • @HoraceZontal Time to call Tyler Self…

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I’m sure he’d like to be playing, but he’s making 12.1M this year. And if the analysis is correct, at least there’s a reason beyond Pop just not liking him. It’s the coaching opposite of something that folks often complain about with HCBS: that he doesn’t play the young guys enough early to the point of maybe losing some games now so that they and the team are better later.

Another comment indicated that Pop may be holding Devontae out with the idea of trading him soon. Hopefully he gets to a team that will give him some PT.

  • @HoraceZontal and Merry Christmas everyone!

  • Holy Cow Jalen Wilson!! 21 points and 10 boards vs Giannis and the Bucks! 11-11 on FT’s.

  • Doke has been playing, saw some dunks!🫣

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I haven’t seen his name in a box score all year. Was he hurt or in G-League?

  • @wissox I’m guessing back and forth, or sitting the bench. Somebody was in foul trouble so he got to play. Setting a lot of screens and not being appreciated. Did have some dunks. Maybe 2-3 days ago.

  • Amazing

Doke looks thinner and more mobile.

  • Ochai got traded to Toronto so I guess the raptors will be a popular team to follow now with both him and gradey

  • Yup, lots of former Jayhawks on the move today. Too bad if Och and Dick have to compete for minutes.

Others swapping teams: Marcus Morris, Grimes
