PHOG ALLEN - DUNKING ISN'T BASKETBALL - 1935 ARTICLE

Very interesting reading…I still remember the years when dunking was not allowed. Also, after the dunk was re-introduced, dunking was not allowed during warm up and I remember a game where refs counted 13 dunks during the warm ups and the the game started with the other team shooting 13 technical FTs…ah…the good old days…

@wrwlumpy Nice find. And I agree dunking isn’t basketball, at least it’s never been part of my game!
-
@wissoxfan83 I love great dunks!!
-
Wasn’t there a top ten dunk from TRob against da bears? I was there.
-
@wissoxfan83 Dats cuz white men can’t jump.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Not just top 10, but dunk of the year. Fun read, but dunking’s not going anywhere and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
-
Dunking will never leave the game because it is one of the main things that gets teams and fans excited… along with the shot block.
But it is only worth 2 points. I’d rather have the 3!
Like the big shot block that goes in row 43. Fun to watch, but I’d rather have a Withey block where he keeps it in bounds.

@drgnslayr and I love a beautiful assist, and a steal and… Any great defensive stop that leads to a fast break score!!
-
Me, too!
What I really miss in college is hedge defense. It’s something I have to journey to the NBA to see, even though it is less of a factor as it could be in college because NBA players eventually develop more skills.
I love to watch players get forced into doing something else than their bread and butter. It’s important to the game. Michael Jordan was definitely one of the best at “creating on the fly.”

What I really miss in college basketball is scoring. Last night I check to see the Illinois-Michigan score. They were 3 minutes left in the half, Michigan 18, Illinois 14. I watched for a few minutes and my eyes couldn’t take it.
OAD’s, TAD’s to blame at least in part while more sophisticated defenses keep scoring down in a lot of places like Madison, Lawrence, UV, Gainesville, GTown, etc.
-
@brooksmd whoa there. This white man could- when I hit 35 those days were over.
-
@wrwlumpy That was a really cool article on the history of the sport.
-
Glad they reinstated the dunk, and it is worthy of it’s own “Top Ten” category. But why lump all the other great plays into the “Top Ten Plays?” Why not have ESPN’s “Top Ten” steals, fouls, assists, rebounds or flops?

@JayHawkFanToo Hilarious. I remember when dunking was illegal as well.
