Frankamp

  • Young man got himself in an awful situation. DUI is serious business.

  • @KansasComet sad! Surprised me too.

  • You’d drink too if you realized you just left KU for Wichita State !

  • When Brady got his DUI, He apologized to the school and Self suspended him for a whole semester. Will Conner get the same treatment at Kochville?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4545184

  • @wrwlumpy : Well of course they’ll suspend him from playing but not practicing the rest of this semester and next fall semester…

  • I feel bad for Conner. He had a lifelong dream to be a Jayhawk and contribute to the team; it is really too bad it did not work out for him… While at KU, he was a a good student and teammate and I hope things work out for him on the court…and in Court.

  • He’ll get to drive to practice and back after 2 months. 1 year of probation and court ordered AA meetings plus he’ll have to go to SATOP meetings weekly for 6 months. Yes, I have a son.

  • I wanted him to stay.

    I thought he could play.

    But from what I’ve seen

    Of Frank, Devonte and Greene

It was right for him to go

    And better booze than blow.

But better it would have been

For him to just say no.

What though the radiance which was once so bright

Be now for ever taken from my sight,

Though nothing can bring back the hour

    Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;

We will grieve not, rather find

    Strength in what remains behind…

    . –William Wordsworth

Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood

Now is the time that KU fans ought walk the talk–

Once a Jayhawk always a Jayhawk

    Rock Chalk, Conner, Rock Chalk!

  • Elegantly said JB.

Not going to let my feelings about CF be affected by this, stupid mistake but an all to common one.

When he announced he was leaving I was not disappointed. Not that I think he is a bad player, he surely is pretty damn good. More it was not not the best fit. He’s not as quick as Mason/Graham, he is not a long nor as athletic as Greene/Seldon. Can’t even compare him to KO easily.

After watching the Mason/Graham ball control program, Greene going all sniper-like from 3 and rebounding like a man:

After watching Selden playing D and KO running around like the energizer bunny on speed: I just can not see where Conner would fit in on this team. I think he saw the same thing and got out at the point it would affect him and the team the least. Yes, the least, you have to consider that until seeing the guys in practice he did not know where he stood. He figured it out quickly and made his choice in about as short a time span as you could ask for.

For one I think he made the right choice for him, and probably the best one for KU long term. His leaving let Graham get more minutes to show his stuff. It also lets Greene get more minutes… Both of those players have more upside and both need reps to step up their games. We are beginning to see the results of that and is it not a thing of beauty?

Now if they would extend the games a few minutes we could get Svi some time to become the assassin I think he can be!

  • Very sad for Conner. I have no idea who assisted him in making the decision to transfer. But, i guess the parents weighed in heavily. IMO, unless my kid is a clear League OAD/TAD calibre, I couldn’t care less about PT or Role for his SO year, I would care more about if he is happy where he is.

I guess a player who doesn’t get to play and compete hurts him and maybe lost in disllusionment.

Hope he recovers from it and have a great career in WSU. RCJH!

  • Banned

    Read about this. 😞

Still wish the kid was playing at KU.

With all the OAD’s and big time College Sports, players like CF become causalities. 😞

  • @KansasComet @jaybate-1.0 Yah, I dont even know why it made national news. I mean the kid made a mistake that is all too common for people at any age. Just because he was a KU Basketball player it gets headlines on Espn? Geeeez. Its not like this is the first time this happened to any college athlete and Its not like the kid doesnt have enough to deal with now. Now its aired out for everyone to see. I feel bad for the kid. I hope he pulls through this ok.
Its true, once a Jayhawk always a Jayhawk. I remember tweeting this sentiment to him just after the news broke that he was transferring.
    Be safe Conner, RJCH

  • @Lulufulu I’m not sure I feel bad for the kid. He did something that is incredibly stupid. I hate what alcohol does to people in this country and hate when I read every week about more people killing themselves and others because they want to drink and drive. I don’t call it a mistake. I call it a crime. I make mistakes, I don’t commit crimes.

If Connor wasn’t some top basketball prospect we’d all just see another name in the paper and think he got what he deserved.

I hope I’m not coming across all sanctimonious or anything but that’s the way I see it. I do hope he learns a lesson and comes back strong however.

  • Best line on the KU sports board comment thread on Francamp:

**Robert Brock 16 hours, 56 minutes ago

His Dad is trying to get Conner to transfer to another jail.**

    Ok…that was funny, folks …

  • @Shanghai_RCJH

The problem with not playing as a sophomore if you are a guy like Conner Frankamp is that your primary competition for minutes is Brannen Greene (another sophomore), Frank Mason (soph), and Devonte Graham (fresh). If you can’t find time this year, how are you ever going to find time?

I hope he learns from this DUI and understands that he can’t put lives (including his own) at risk like that. Basketball is a game. DUI is not.

  • @wissoxfan83 I’m right there with you. Yes it is sad, but really a 19 year old is legally not supposed to be drinking, and no one is supposed to drink and drive. He is big news in Wichita, the prodigal son returning. He left Kansas to go be “the man” somewhere else. This is not how you do it. There is lots of talk about the pressure put on him by his father to transfer or do this or that but at some point it is time to step up and be at least a man even if you aren’t the man. Do people make mistakes? Of course. Should he be forgiven? Yes. Does that mean we should feel bad for him? NO! He made a poor decision and should now face the consequences. Unfortunately for him, because of who he is and what he has done both on and off the court, those consequences come with publicity.

  • Alcoholism is a disease. But if you are a young college kid it is looked upon as just a right of passage. No harm, no foul. Unfortunately, outside of AA and Al-Anon, the perception is different. If someone with type two diabetes has a stroke while driving and kills everyone in a minivan, it is a horrible tragedy. If a person is Drinking and driving and kills everyone in a minivan, that person will go to jail. Conner is a very young man who is treated like a God to those in Wichita and many on this site. The attention that all of this is getting should serve as a lesson to all who function in the limelight. Jamari got through his second 15 minutes of Scrutiny as an adult. The courts are different now days in regard to DUI, MIP, and DWI. We all make mistakes and Conner is lucky that he had a family to bail him out and take him home. He’s lucky to have a family that can afford an attorney to make it all a bit easier, and he is lucky that he has so many admirers to forgive and hope that he moves on. Brady had the same situation with a good family and we as Jayhawks gladly welcomed back the prodigal son. We should also remember once a Jayhawk, always a Jayhawk. I don’t usually read the Wichita Eagle, but this is an excellent hometown article.

  • @wrwlumpy

Having a stroke while driving (if you don’t have a history of strokes) isn’t criminal. Intentionally drinking (with all of the information that we have that shows that compromises your ability to react) and driving is a very serious act.

Yes, alcoholism is a disease. But if you are a sober alcoholic, there is nothing that should prevent you from driving. However, if you are intoxicated, you should not be driving, period.

DUI is a terrible thing that, unfortunately, is not treated as such in the US. In some countries, DUI is punishable by a year in jail for the first offense. In those countries, DUI’s are rare because no amount of money or connections can get you out of a DUI conviction and the mandatory year in jail. Here in the US, if you know the right people and have enough money, you can get out of a DUI without much in the way of punishment.

I hope Conner moves on because I don’t want to see a young man like him ruin his life. But I also hope he learned not to drink and drive so that he doesn’t ruin someone else’s life.

  • @nuleafjhawk

“You’d drink too if you realized you just left KU for Wichita State !”

On top of that… there is no guarantee he’ll actually bank more PT minutes there either.

He’s not going to unseat VanVleet or Baker. He’ll still be waiting his turn, and they have a bunch of young players working in some minutes he’ll have to beat out, too.

If I had to give him advice I’d tell him to look at his current life and except where he is as a low point and make a plan to lift himself to a better place.

  • I posted this in another thread…

Maybe Frankamp’s problem is more serious than we thought. Police reports that his blood-alcohol content was over twice the legal limit. An individual not used to drinking would have a serious physical impairment and have trouble geting in the car, let alone driving, unless he has developed a tolerance to alcohol. Perhaps more to the story than we know.

  • As a man who also started balding in high school, I understand the desire to drink to forget…

  • @wissoxfan83 You are right Wissox, it is a crime. He should be punished accordingly. Putting his own life and other peoples lives in danger was a very stupid decision. My only point is if it were any other person, it wouldnt have made news locally at all, much less national headlines on the Espn site. Its just added BS that doesnt need to happen, the kid already has enough to deal with.
