Turg upsets ISU

  • Congrats to Coach Turgeon and his Terps for upsetting #13 Iowa St.

  • Good for Turg. He needed to catch a break!

  • Pussycats lost to AZ too. Without Foster, would have been a shellacking.

  • Saw this about another D-Leaguer. Anyone surprised?

Former Kansas University point guard Naadir Tharpe has averaged 6.8 points and 4.8 assists a game in his first five games with the Los Angeles D-fenders of the NBA Developmental League. The team plays in the Lakers’ practice facility which seats under 200 fans.

Tharpe, 5-11 from Worcester, Massachusetts, left KU after three seasons. He said he wanted to be closer to his 2-year-old daughter who had medical issues. Tharpe told the Worcester Telegram and Gazette his daughter is fine and her health wasn’t the main reason he departed KU.

“It just didn’t work out how it was supposed to. That’s why I left,” said Tharpe. Remember, a risque photo of Tharpe and a woman appeared on the Internet prior to his departure, causing quite a controversy.

“It was basically both the coach’s as well as mine, but the majority of it was the coach’s decision,” Tharpe added of leaving.

“Being a point guard, you have to be able to lead in all aspects. So a couple of situations, I felt like I wasn’t leading my best, and everything falls back on the point guard. You’ve got to be able to want to take that toll and commit to that. There were certain situations he didn’t feel like I did my thing on the court. I also know myself that wasn’t my best play at Kansas. So we both just came to the decision that it wasn’t good for me to stay there.”

He decided against transferring because he was not sure the NCAA would grant him a waiver to play this season. He did not want to sit out a year.

“I definitely feel like I have a chance (to play in NBA),” Tharpe told reporter Bill Doyle. “I just have to be able to focus and showcase my skills. That’s what it comes down to. If I’m able to do that, scouts and other teams will be able to see me.”

  • @brooksmd

    Agree with them switching conferences?

  • He should’ve stayed at A & M, imo. He is on a very short leash, so the Iowa St win was essential for job security.

  • @RockChalkinTexas Amazing, isn’t it. Tharpe didn’t leave because of his daughter. It was just a blatant lie. But we knew that, didn’t we?

  • @HighEliteMajor

That may have been the agreement that he and Coach Self came to as far as the reason for him leaving so that he could leave the option of transferring open. Basically, Self may have told Tharpe that he could not reference the controversy and in exchange KU would grant his transfer release to wherever he wanted outside the Big 12, and potentially support his request for an NCAA waiver.

I don’t know any of that for sure, but I have heard that those types of agreements are struck regularly in the NCAA.

  • @HighEliteMajor

“Amazing, isn’t it. Tharpe didn’t leave because of his daughter. It was just a blatant lie. But we knew that, didn’t we?”

You just described the real reason why Tharpe was removed. He lost his credibility. His walk wasn’t matching his talk.

Compare him with Tyshawn. Tyshawn had quite a few problems at Kansas. He was constantly in Self’s dog house. However… Tyshawn didn’t fill the air with bs and then not put the effort into matching his words.

I’m afraid Naa still doesn’t get it. Leadership is based on trust. And it works that way in the NBA, too. He might get a few minutes and make some points/assists. But that leap into real minutes relates to trust. Gotta have it. The worst thing you can do is promise and then not perform to the promise. That is why Naa was advised to leave.

  • And just remembered while watching a Maryland game earlier this week that Scotty Wilbekin was playing on Maryland. Why did he transfer from FL? Was it like Tarik? A senior and already graduated? I remember thinking “well at least we don’t have to worry about him when we play Florida.” 🙂

    Gobble, Gobble, Gobble!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone on KuBuckets.com.

  • @RockChalkinTexas I think you dreamed that … Wilbekin turned pro after his junior season and then didn’t get drafted.

  • @HighEliteMajor there is a younger one, Mitchell who signed w/wake forest. I’m guessing it’s his brother.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 and @HEM

You are both right. It WAS a Wake Forest game we were watching. And I only saw the name on the jersey. My bad!

  • @HighEliteMajor

Why is that surprising or amazing? I can’t think of a time a coach said that player left the program because he was punk, other than in a handful of blatant acts by a player, such as Giles dragging his girlfriend by the hair, and even then, the true reason was not even mentioned even when everybody knew it. There is always a diplomatic release that saves face for both sides and gives the player the option of moving somewhere else. Much like the statement Coach Self made about not recruiting Cauley-Stein.

  • @JayHawkFanToo You have missed the nuance of sarcasm. Saying, “Amazing, isn’t it” is not intended to convey that it was actually amazing. It was the opposite – to convey that it was actually not amazing.

  • @HighEliteMajor I thought wilbekin was a sr last year, that shows how much I know!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Actually, you’re right. He did play four seasons and did not turn pro early.

  • @HighEliteMajor

    I must be sarcasm impaired… 🙂
