Something nice

  • Which POY does he resemble? His FT% would be unique. He’s an average rebounder and defender. I don’t want him to be the focal point of our O because we need the 3 ball.

    https://www.basketball-reference.com/awards/ap_poy.html

Seems like some Bill Self lip service. I thought he would be a Wooden candidate his sophomore season. And I was way wrong.

His closest recent comp is Griffin. Avg 22 and 14 with a .590 FT%

  • @approxinfinity IDK KU was really good with Dok and really average without him last season. Dedrick is the kind of big I don’t want. Hollow stat stuffer you can’t rely on to get his own. Good luck stopping a Dok dunk.

  • @dylans Doke isn’t good against the double team and can’t create his shot off the dribble. He’s reliant on the team to get his. Dedric could create, but didn’t pass and didn’t play D. Neither one is a POY candidate.

We were better with Doke for sure. We would have been better with De Sousa as well. We needed a strong big who wasn’t afraid to rim protect or play back to basket. But that’s needing the role to be filled by someone competent, it’s not specifically needing Doke.

  • @approxinfinity Do you remember all the coaches the first 9 games saying you have to game plan for the big guy? And what a load he was? (I think it was the Wafford coach who was most honest) Dok is a game changer. Unfortunately his free throws will keep him from being a cheat code. Seriously if he could make free throws there would be no reason for anyone else to shoot next year. -you have to shoot 53% from three to match his 80% 2 point dunking.

  • @dylans We needed Q’s 5 (?) 3s to beat Michigan State. Wofford is Wofford.

Maybe if Doke could shoot FTs significantly better, like magic that isn’t going to happen better, Psycho T could be a beatable comp. That really does feel like the only way, because he’s just not going to average 22 pts per game the way the game has changed to outside-in, unless he can make FTs.

  • Being realistic, he won’t get the rebound numbers he needs to win it. The points will be there if he stays healthy.

Hansbrough had the media hype machine behind him since he was at UNC…

  • @approxinfinity Dok didn’t play much against Wofford. It was just interesting to hear their coach say how much time they spent game planning for the big guy. (And then complaining KU played a different game when he went down)

Dok is the single most important player on this roster regardless of whomever Bill signs. If he’d play better D and rebound with authority he would be the most dominate post player since Shaq. No one in college is strong enough to man him up.

Dok is a game changer, but he is but one piece of an extremely flawed roster at this point.

  • Eating up double digit rebounds a game, single greatest dimension he could add IMO. Since I’m not holding my breath on the free throws.

  • @dylans Shaq’s POY year, he averaged 27.6 pts, 14.7 rebounds, and had 140 blocks in 28 games. That’s 5 blocks a game! There’s just no way Doke comes close to that. You’re talking about more than doubling his blocks, points, and rebounds, not to mention doubling assists and steals, and improving FT%. Sorry, I just don’t see it.

  • For fun though, I enjoyed watching 14 year old Doke dunk all over a bunch of teenagers.

  • @approxinfinity Since Shaq, not Shaq’s equal though. I mean physically imposing like Shaq. No one can body him up. He’s not nearly as skilled as Shaq. He’s not a game changer like AD. He’s not fundamentally sound like Kaminski. He’s just freakin huge and you can’t do a damn thing about it other than foul him.

More importantly is how bad KU sucked hind tit without him last year. It’s like watching a team without LeBron or Aaron Rodgers. That’s when you see how good they are. Dok is amazing I hope we all get to see 40 games of him next year to let it soak in.

  • @approxinfinity I’d be mildly surprised if Dok plays in the NBA. I’d be shocked if he plays major minutes in the NBA. He can’t shoot or move laterally well enough. That won’t stop him from dominating college Tebow style though.

Ok, we can agree on that. He’s huge and can dunk with the authority of Shaq. His FG% is amazing.

That part I disagree with. The team was flawed. He was absolutely critical to the team. But the team was Swiss cheese. It’s not like we were blowing people out at the beginning of the season. They were all very close games. Like LeBron or Rodgers, the team was constructed with a healthy Doke in mind. You can’t tell me that the Cavs or the Packers wouldn’t win games without LeBron or Rodgers if they were never on the team in the first place.

I do think Doke is unique, enjoyable to watch, a dedicated Jayhawk, and easy to root for. But I don’t want the team constructed around him. He’ll go down and it will be curtains.

  • @ajvan

Yes! Double-digit rebounds, especially some offensive boards, not only means added possessions, but he’s almost automatic under the basket to score.

So let’s say Devon returns. How many games do we lose if Doke stays healthy all year?

I seem to recall we were undefeated with him last year.

  • @BShark Damm buddy looking at this picture - -we thought Doke was big , then you look at Jo Jo - Jo Jo is HUGE - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Embiid is a generational talent. I hope he can stay healthy. Too bad he didn’t come along 20 years earlier(for selfish reasons). Bigs dominated then and stayed in college more than 1 year… what could’ve been.

All I was really getting at. You don’t get a Sr that isn’t flawed.

I’d re-think that hill - The Cavs have been horrid for decades. McCarthy and the GM are responsible for the best QB in football only getting one championship in his career. They are both terrible teams without the best player in their respective sport. (The Packers were just bad in the McCarthy era) I’m recalling the Cavs having 3 #1 picks in a row -Kyrie, Bennett, Wiggins and they would’ve had more before that, but they selected LeBron #1.

Add Dok in place of Landen Lucas and KU cuts down the nets in March on a couple of those teams. He’d have been a real nice compliment to Perry. Or on the 4 out crew.

Dok is amazing I hope we all get to see 40 games of him next year to let it soak in.

If it’s constructed around him it’s due to recruiting missed and the season was/is doomed from the start. He has to be the focal point on the block and he must get his touches. They’re worth 1.6pts per shot. But Dotson or Grimes or RJ or Ochai needs to open things up from the perimeter. You can’t win it all being one dimensional.

  • @approxinfinity that was fun. Two differing opinions with no name calling. Imagine that!

lol - - no now we can’t have that going on in here - - different opinions without some kind of mud slinging lol - -we let that go what comes next lol. ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Joel is listed at 7’0’’ and 250 lbs. I think it’s probably 7’2’’ and close to 300 lbs.

🙂 Appreciate you buddy. Happy Sunday!

  • Now I’m disappointed. No mudslinging to feed my passive aggressive tendencies. Think I’ll have some sorbet. If things warm up in here… give me a shout.

I’ve been so desperate I’m calling myself names. 2020 election can’t come quick enough.

    I NEED DRAMA!

    Sincerely, Dingleberry

  • @BShark that is embiid’s sister, I’m pretty sure.

People around the NBA say Embiid is closer to 280 now. That picture suggests he’s definitely more like 7-1 or 7-2.
