RJ Hampton

@BShark Right, it is there to protect the school. To secure the commitment (creating penalty if the player backs out). This is where players have power, and this power is overlooked. RJ has power. Guys who wait have increased leverage because the supply is vastly decreased. Commit to KU. Don’t sign. See how things shake out. If KU gets probation, back out. If another player decides to come that compromises what RJ wants, back out and go somewhere else. The players have power — but the victim narrative is what we hear instead. Just silly.

If he is gonna sign, it has to be by tomorrow. That said we have seen before that players sign and wait to announce.
tomorrow the end of Signing period? - - so Precious won’t be signing either huh? - - not announcing till this weekend

In addition, players shouldn’t have to sit when they transfer (ever IMO) but definitely if they leave before the season.
-
@FarmerJayhawk You’re talking about changing rules. I strongly believe that the better way to approach this is to look for ways the athlete can operate effectively within the rules that he agrees to when he becomes a student-athlete.
When you permit transfers as you suggest, it’s free agency each year and such a system would create chaos. Without that very minor penalty, you’d have the grad transfer thing but with every level of player.
The requirement to sit is a core necessity to maintain stability. If one cares about CBB, they would oppose such a reckless rule change.

Or all one cares about is the students who are playing the game above the product of college athletics. I could care less if a few less people watch college sports because they are mad a few more guys a season transferred. I do care that the players, who are the ones putting blood sweat and tears into this for 40+ hours a week, are given every freedom a normal person is given. They are the only ones limited by the system. Not other students. Not coaches. Not administrators. Not professors. Not referees. Not another single person involved.
And, to say that it would create complete chaos is simply untrue. Already, 40% of players transfer by the end of their sophomore year. If anything, this rule change would improve the game because we wouldn’t have such a significant amount of talent sitting out each season.
If you can’t get players to stay as a coach, maybe your program just sucks. Maybe your an asshole of a coach. Maybe you’re a liar. Maybe you’re just not a good coach and players think they can develop better somewhere else. Either way, if a coach needs “leverage” in order to keep players, than he probably sucks at his job. Hell, it’s part of the reason someone like Mike Rice was able to get away with abusing players at Rutgers.
It’s a dumb rule, and assuming it would create anymore chaos than exists isn’t supported by anything in the real world. The average person with freedom to change jobs, literally whenever the feel like it, still stays at the same place for 4.6 years. Any logical person wouldn’t transfer after their junior season because they would only be 30 credits from a degree and transferring would mean they’d have to go to school for another year without having it paid for by scholarship. So that eliminates a quarter of potential transfers.
I would LOVE to hear why you think it is so reckless to CBB though.

I agree with you, one-hundred percent. As if there isn’t enough grifting already, let’s allow the players to come and go as they please. Naw, pass…

Once the NBAs OAD rule is gone I hope that the NCAA requires “student” athletes to stay in school 2 years. But I’d like to see the scholarships guaranteed for 4 years (barring something egregious ie prison). I know you really can’t make this happen, but maybe have the kid sign a contract with the U that has a buyout of whatever a year of that scholarship and housing is really worth. I’d like them to think about it at least. I’m looking at you Grimes…$40k isn’t anything to sneeze at in the G-league.
-
This might make a decent thread, hint hint. I saw an unread message from this RJ thread and thought, great new news, but I was wrong.
All of you guys do make great points by the way.

I don’t understand why people keep saying the OAD is going to go away. Players are still going to only go to college for one year and enter the draft. ( Not trying to call you out @dylans ) I just keep hearing people say this it isn’t true. I understand that the “elite” players will soon ( hopefully) have the option to go straight to the NBA however, when that rule is put in place there are still going to be OAD players.
-
@HighEliteMajor Probation could actually be a selling feature for a typical OAD. 10 years ago, they would’ve said " You don’t want to go to “XYZ” because they might be placed on probation and you might not make the NCAA tournament". Now they say " hey, go to XYZ… hopefully they’ll get placed on probation, and you won’t have to bother with the NCAA tournament. That way you can keep yourself fresh." Would Quentin have been broken up if we hadn’t made the tournament last year … or would he have used that time to select his agent? ( I’m picking on Quentin here- there are several other OADS I could’ve used).
A great example is Malik Newman’s near historic tournament run two years ago. He averaged 32 points per game in a 5 game run, and didn’t get a whiff of interest from the NBA during the draft.

Hampton’s twitter bio now reads: “your question will be answered soon… maybe, idk I’m kind of sleepy right now.”
He also just tweeted that he wishes LE (Little Elm) all the best.

Could a kid possibly be so cruel to leave us hanging and go to parts unknown? Don’t answer that! This recruiting sucks! Do you all think coach knows what will play out? I love d dot and want him back, selfishly, but that’s me. He can’t hit shots, just layups. Maybe that’s enough to keep him. Bilas thinks he needs to stay. It’s a pretty crappy draft though, who knows, he ran the team well today! Poised. I’m sick of this! Grimes is a good kid, I don’t fault him. I just don’t understand him. Royals suck!

He didn’t get an invite to either the NBA or G League combine.

Memphis absolutely cannot take both these dudes. Just saying. https://twitter.com/rjhampton14/status/1129590446408261633?s=21

Memphis fans on Twitter (and others) saying if Tucker stays in the draft, a slot opens for RJ Hampton. THAT would be a kick in the b*lls…
-
So, who’d like to spank Memphis in the sweet 16 next year?
-
@FarmerJayhawk So…Does Hampton’s decision at least partially depend on whether Dotson is back? Or is he waiting on academic stuff?
-
Kevin Durant to Memphis. He’s been faking an injury this whole time. He just wanted a chance to play for Penny.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich LMAO…PHOF!

I don’t think so. It’s more about money overseas.
-
@Hawk8086 Now that Grimes it talking about coming back all of a sudden after a pretty crappy combine, I’m more worried he would affect Hampton’s decision.
-
@ajvan surely, Self is All over that!
-
I really would like to open this site soon and read: - - Hampton & Wilson commit to KU as a package - - Devon Dotson returns to KU – & Quentin Grimes says he is staying in the NBA draft - - that would be the perfect Christmas present in May lol – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Brand new post if so! Getting depressing hitting on this one
-
Self has it covered.

And Tech just took another 2019 kid. Pretty sure they’re out of scholarships now.

That’s big time. It would be higher if Ryan was still allowed to make picks too. It’s KU or overseas.
