Life hits hard sometimes

  • Walking to the Sox game Wednesday and we pass a crime scene. A terrible shooting that was the result of a fight at a school. Two kids walking home that were involved were gunned down. Two kids who admittedly shouldn’t have been fighting but also two kids who didn’t deserve to die because they were fighting. Parents mourning. Tough stuff. 1 block from Sox park. My wife and I saw the evidence cones all over 35th street.

This morning I look at facebook and one of my favs from a decade ago in Baton Rouge is mourning the passing of his brother whom I also taught. I look at NOLA.com to try to find the story about Ronalds death and see a headline of a college basketball player from LSU whom I saw play a few times during our last year in Baton Rouge. There was a fight. Doesn’t say if he was involved. Some will say he shouldn’t be out on the streets at midnight. Last I checked it’s not against the law. Last night while you and I were sleeping. Wayde Sims, 20 years and gone.

    Tough morning.

I am so sorry to read about all of these incidents which obviously hit very close to home for you. I will keep you and your wife, as well as the families of the victims, in my prayers. All of this senseless violence is beyond heartbreaking. And,BTW, thank you for your service as a teacher. I was fortunate to have fabulous teachers growing up in the boonies of Western Kansas, and I’m sure your current and former students feel the same way about you.

  • Thanks BC! Seems like there’s been a lot lately in my life like this lately. I try my best to steer kids on the right track but you can only do so much.

  • @wissox

I have a close friend who just retired from teaching high school in New Iberia, LA. She worked so hard and got so little recognition, but I know she made a difference in at least some of her students lives. I considered a teaching career years ago, but went a different direction. I think I would have enjoyed it “back in the day” but in today’s crazy world I don’t think I would be very good at it.

  • @bcjayhawk Thanks for the encouragement. Today was a really rough day for me and I needed to hear it! Thanks!
