Big night for Frank Mason 111-BIFM
-
@FarSideHawk lol. Yeah rough times for Towson basketball. Frank seemed to try to sidestep and not dog them tonight.
-
-
That’s just awesome. Mason is the epitome of what college basketball is and what all players should aspire to become. Nobody worked harder. Nobody is more deserving. We have witnessed the birth of a legend. Congrats, Frank!
-
How did all of the recruiting experts miss this kid.
Find of a lifetime for Townsend.
None of us will Forget Frank Mason III
Right now, some young Jayhawk Fan is shooting alone on a court saying 3,2,1…Frank Mason for Thhhrrrreeeeeeeeeeeee
-
@Blown thank you kurtis Townsend!
-
@Blown your boys!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 yep
-
Sorry JoJo White, sorry Aaron Miles, sorry Mario Chalmers, sorry Sherron Collins, Senior Frank Mason is the starting guard on my all KU team.
-
And now we know the rest of the story…
Why Frankamp bailed.
-
@wrwlumpy I think they would agree.
-
This is basically unanswerable, but if Frank had gone to Towson instead, would he have won all these awards if he’d played there? Would any of us heard of him? I guess it’s possible, but hard to say.
-
@wissox no
Hall of fame coach
National exposure
World class facilities
Elite strength coach
Outstanding peer leadership
All factors
-
@wissox heck no!

And orthopedists are getting ready for an upsurge in treating all those coming injuries from would be imitators of his drives throwing caution to the winds…because few will have his toughness and determination off the court to ready themselves for on the court.
Where is that video of his workout?
-
@Blown @Crimsonorblue22 I’m not sure you’re giving Frank enough credit then.
-
@wissox Too many slow white kids on that team for Frank to get his points.
-
@wissox seen Towson play in the last 4 years?
-
Frank is one of my all time favorites in all sports and there is a long list to go with why. Briefly, I will always remember Frank as the reason KU beat Duke in both Champion Classics he participated in against the Blue Devils. His freshman and senior year victories over Duke are fantastic bookends to one of the all time careers at KU. My emotions were very high watching Frank tonight. Big shoes to fill in Lawrence next year.
-
@nuleafjhawk Love that song - - one of my all time favorite groups lol. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Of course Danny Manning should have swept all major awards as well. I mean Hersey Hawkins had a nice year too for a mid major, but Danny, well you all know what he did.

Frank was great for us, but with Towson he would have had to have been the best player in college bb history to achieve that success. Even with him, our teams of 3 to 5 stars never made a final 4. All Frank’s assists required scorers on the other end, and his transition baskets required defensive rebounders, and drives to the basket required picks, and his outside shooting required at least some other scoring threats.
We saw what happens when your star is the only player who shows up. That would have been Towson.
Now, the story changes if he became well known at Towson his first two years, and they manage to find a big who isn’t well rated but becomes great working in tandem with Frank.
More likely, he goes to Towson, sees how limited his propects are, and transfers after 2 years to KU, sits out his 3rd year, and we would still have him around next year!

@wrwlumpy You almost took the words out of my mouth. JoJo has always been my favorite guard at KU. Now he has been replaced by Frank. I never thought that I would see another player who was so mature both on the court and off as JoJo. Nothing ever seemed to phase him. Frank has the same type of maturity to run a team; however he has something that JoJo did not have in college and that is his ability to shoot.
Now I just hope that Frank can have the same kind of success at the next level. Frank will be a success at whatever he does because he has unbelievable drive. I don’t believe that he envisioned winning awards like he has. I do believe that his self-confidence and drive did allow him to see himself as able to play at the level that he has achieved.
-
@wrwlumpy Wayne had a decent game last night.
@Mayjay Obviously, he’s not going to win at Towson like he did here, but he wouldn’t have been the first person to stand out at a mid major, Stephen Curry is the obvious example. With talent and desire like he has, maybe he becomes well known there as well, I mean why not? He’s obviously very talented.

@wissox Towson could not be spoken of in the same breath as Davidson, and I doubt the term “mid-major” could apply to both schools. Look at their basketball pedigrees.
Towson appeared in the Division 2 tourney twice in the 70s (3-2 record, losing first in the Elite 8 and next in the regional finals), and lost its opening games in the only two appearances it has made in the Division 1 tourney, in 1990 and 91. Towson has won a total of 3 conference championships, in 90, 91, and 92.
Contrast that with Davidson, which was a pretty renowned mid-major even before Curry arrived:
The suggestion that Frank could have ridden Towson to heights comparable to what Curry did at Davidson is wishful thinking, I am afraid. Curry went to a school with a history of success. Frank might well have toiled in oblivion.
-
@mayjay thank God KT found Frank! How 'bout Appalachian state?
-
@mayjay Not sure if you understood my post! “Obviously, he’s not going to win at Towson like he did here, but he wouldn’t have been the first person to stand out at a mid major.” OK, granted I guess they’re not a mid major. Towson plays in the same league as George Mason which was called a mid major when they went final fouring.
My original post was if the guy was good enough to win NPOY, he had to have enough talent, even without the elite coaching/facilities/etc, to get noticed. Not trying to start a peeing match here, just discussing.
-
@wissox I think Frank has said many times who knows what would have happened to him if KT hadn’t found him in that back gym. He’s been so grateful for so many KU people in his life, coaches, academic, teammates etc. God placed him in the right place!
-
@wissox I wasn’t trying to be contentious, just discussing, too! I just think the notoriety of playing for Davidson would have given Curry a much greater chance of getting awards than anyone at Towson. But I do think Frank would have transferred out to a bigger program.
The info about Towson certainly put into better perspective for me what a major step up he took when changing to KU–more than a step, more like an elevator!
