Sixers’ Joel Embiid out for rest of season with torn meniscus 2:10 PM CT ESPN.com news services Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will miss the remainder of the season after a follow-up MRI revealed that his meniscus tear “appears more pronounced,” the team announced Tuesday.
Embiid . He has not played since Jan. 27 after suffering a bruised left knee.
The No. 3 overall pick in 2014, Embiid missed the first two seasons while recovering from foot surgery. He is averaging 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in 2016-17.
“Our primary objective and focus remains to protect his long-term health and ability to perform on the basketball court,” Sixers president Bryan Colangelo said. “As our medical team and performance staff continue their diligence in the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of Joel’s injury, we will provide any pertinent updates when available.”

@Crimsonorblue22 Bummer.
-
This is really bad news. He will have played less than one half season in 3 years and the comparison to Oden will start soon. What an incredible but injury prone talent. Hoping he recovers and has a long and injury free career.
-
At least it’s not an acl!
-
He will come back next year, and be the MVP of the league. Sending out well wishes for the kid- he deserves a healthy season.
-
I fear you may be right.
Embiid is heading for one of three career arcs
-
The Greg Oden - never gets going because he can’t stay healthy, out of basketball completely within another two years.
-
The Ralph Sampson - healthy briefly, but never able to reach his full potential before injuries derail him. He’s able to stick around a while, but never becomes what he could have.
-
The Bill Walton - has a few truly great seasons and can have a title contender built around him, but injuries eventually limit him to being a very good backup because his body just can’t handle the minutes workload.
We are in Oden territory right now, but Embiid can get to Sampson or Walton range if he can stay on the court for a couple of years straight.

I’m going w/positive thoughts! ️ Meniscus is not so bad
-
I don’t know why they didn’t go in and clean it up right away. It won’t heal itself. All they can do is trim it up so it doesn’t rip further.
Tyshawn missed all of a week for his meniscus surgery. I also had a co-worker screw his up (babied it too much and then over did it) and have one turn into two and several months of recovery. So I guess it can go either way.
-
Don’t forget Yao Ming, His feet just could not handle his size.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Major major bummer. He is so far and away better than Oden ever was. Comparison isn’t fair.
Also, hope he heals his knee fully, gets back to the game soon. At least its not his foot again.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I don’t know, mine was pretty screwed up. - -Had surgery on my Meniscus and LCl. and then turned around and tore my Meniscus again. - I thought dam, After my 1st surgery, knee just wasn’t healing right, went back in and he did MRi and came back in and said well, you tore it AGAIN only worse this time, so it can be bad - My knee is still giving me some problems - there are days even after all this time when it just doesn’t feel right around the knee cap area, kind of makes me walk with some limp even know, and it’s going on almost a year - -so it is going to take a little time. - I hope he can get this knee issue straightened out would be a really big waste. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@dylans Ya that’s kind of what happened to me. - U think I just rushed mine back to fast , wasn’t babying to much - mine was trying to do to much to fast tore it up worse the 2nd time and still kind of in recovery. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer54 he’s going to Germany for surgery, probably a little younger than you and better rehab than you had.
-
Gosh… you just never know on injuries. JoJo could continue to get injured or could go injury-free for years.
I just hope for the latter… he’s such a talent and a cool cat with a hilarious sense of humor.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 ya money talks pretty loud, poor people like myself just rely on insurance nothin special and umm ya like 40 yrs younger. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
We should have a post on diet, exercise and rest. I still don’t believe that Jojo eats properly. And he went for fast strength gains rather than Hudy’s philosophy (his soft tissues clearly didn’t keep pace with the muscle gains).
