Rick Pitino S-U-C-K-S

  • @nuleafjhawk on e s p n

  • Still, my favorite sign of all during the final Missouri game was “NOW YOU’RE KENTUCKY’S BITCH!”

  • @dylans

Hey wait a minute… Mizzies have perfect unity when lining up to buy meth from their dealer!

  • Pitino has lost it.

He has quite a history that influenced the game of basketball. But the Pitino we see today is not that Pitino.

Call it “old age” or maybe he is sampling too much of that Kentucky bourbon with his name on it.

  • @drgnslayr Line 'em up ear to ear, and you can see right through.

  • @JayHawkFanToo YA, and Calipari walked off from the half time interview in the Mizzery game too. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • So in the past, we’ve had threads about how coach K sucks. Coach Cal sucks. Coach Pitino sucks. Heck, even some think coach Roy sucks. Amazing how these guys win national titles and suck so much. One could argue

Perhaps a little perspective from another point of view may enable a slight bit of objectivity to creep into the mix.

I would be utterly embarrassed if our fans chanted “You suck” at any coach. I would be utterly embarrassed if any adult in our arena was yelling “you suck” at an opposing coach or player.

“Sit down Norm” is perhaps our speed.

We can post our little digs at all of these coaches, but they all – each and every one of them – are great coaches. Titans in the arena of college basketball. All hall of famers.

But they suck. I get it.

  • @HighEliteMajor the problem is people tend to be super critical of others and think that they themselves are some kind of picture perfect example of moral living. In short, too many are self righteous when the reality is we are all imperfect and we shouldn’t look down so much at others. I say this thread should end here to avoid looking like the “uncivilized” message boards of opposing teams that are always the subject of our constant disapproval.

  • An old angry Baylor fan was yelling at our bench last weekend.

  • @HighEliteMajor The problem is that these guys are a product of their environment. Titans of coaching, sure. Likeable people? I don’t think so. Being successful does not make you a hero by default. Success is a galvanizing factor. Success can make you either hero or villain.

I’d argue the first three in your list are villains, and Roy is just goofy and a bit disingenuous and vain, but nothing to character assassinate, I agree. I think he’s a decent person on top of being a great coach. I’d add Boeheim to that list of villains right behind K.

And I’d put them in stark contrast to our hero Bill Self. Does he have a few warts? Sure. Would he ever throw a hissy fit like Pitino did last night or sleep around on Cindy? No way man. And if he acted like these other guys I would turn the TV off. I wouldn’t root for a coach or players that act disgracefully and I owe Rick Pitino nothing for his success.

It seems as though you’re insinuating that they are beyond reproach because they’ve been successful, when probably their success is in large part a product of undesirable behavior. This makes Bill Self all the more remarkable becoming an upper echeleon coach without stooping to the same lows.

It’s not amazing at all that these guys win national titles. We all know the things they did to get there, the things they do to stay there, and the people and systems that prop them up.

There ARE other good guys in the industry that are successful. I think the elders in the Big12, at this point in their careers, are pretty clean and likeable people: Lon and Huggie Bear, and both have the capacity to put together ranked teams year in year out.

If you look at any sport, I think you can make a case that some of the top people are warped human beings.

Let’s hope Bill Self retires a hero before the sport warps him into something he does not want to be. But I believe our man is made of steel.

  • @approxinfinity Like you said, Pitino sucks.

  • @approxinfinity Yeah, that’s pretty lame. All Pitino had to do was ignore the muther effer. I mean who cares what fans think anyways? right? 😉

  • @HighEliteMajor The issue here isn’t the accuracy or crudeness of the fans’ comment made to Pitino, it’s the way that Pitino reacted to the comment. I have to think he’s heard much worse than “you suck” in his coaching career considering he’s coached for a long time and in a lot of different places. I mean, “you suck” is almost a compliment at a Knicks game. His reaction was totally immature and inappropriate and he should be better than that.

Then again, I don’t know what other things may have been irking Pitino at that particular moment. He was trailing a Williams-coached team at halftime, so maybe he was having flashbacks of 150-95.

  • I was hollering at coach Dixon to sit down, clear across AFH, from the very top row. I don’t think he heard me. Neither did the refs!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Rolling! 😆

  • @approxinfinity

It’s possible Rick was annoyed about something else and took it out on the fan. Like may he just got last month’s bill for recruiting hookers and it was over budget?

    Just kidding!

  • @HighEliteMajor I’ve read a few Bill Self sucks threads on here as well…

  • @jaybate-1.0 PHOF…

  • Sounds to me like he is a sore loser. I know was just half time but they was down double digits and let up over 60 in a half. Could you imagine how he would handle the octogon of dumb chanting f his school. Heard worse such in middle school JV man. Suck it up little Ricky.

  • @HighEliteMajor I would actually agree with you in almost everything you post. As everyone knows, Lord Mayjay is the Defender of Decorum, ad nauseam.

Except for the sense I get that you perhaps think people here are defending the chant or something like that because of past posts dissing coaches, or schools. I think people are saying these things happen. No, the coach shouldn’t be treated that way. But, since it happens in 95% of arenas, then, yes, Pitino is expected to be above the fray, as is every competitor. It is pretty irrelevant what the chant is, or whether it is ridiculously inaccurate as you posit.

I have heard the BS chant at KU games directed to the refs, and my memories take me back to the mid-70s when we yelled it then. The treatment of refs everywhere is what I deplore–but that comes from a career of being the guy in the middle of highly charged disputes with everyone hating that guy.

  • By the way, Rob Dauster’s Colloege Basketball Talks weekly podcast had a guy on today who used to work for ESPN. He is convinced by the way the reporter kind of hemmed and spelled her way through “sucked” that she was, let’s say, presenting alternate facts so as to not upset the bigwigs at Disney.

Perhaps the word was said but more as a request or perhaps a demand? The imagination can run amok with the various expressions that might have been used. Remember the football scene in the movie MAS*H (1970) where our hero docs concoct a scheme to provoke the big guy who is just devastating them into chasing one of their little guys all over the field so he is ejected?

  • All I know is we wouldn’t even be talking about these slightly irritating guys if Jim Calhoun was still coaching.

  • @DanR you thought Calhoun was irritating? Man I never thought that. I mean, he did win three titles in twelve years.

  • @HawkChamp I can’t tell if you’re joking or not 😄 Successful, yes. Most annoying marble mouthed self-absorbed windbag? Most definitely!
