The Right Signs....

    I’m a happy camper today.

There was some very nice signs we can take away from last night’s game.

    D E V O N T E !

I noticed he stepped up big in the Baylor game, just had an off-night from the field. That same intensity he brought to Waco was back on display in AFH last night.

The THREE AMIGOS are getting it together for March!

    C A R L T O N !

How great was he last night? Wasn’t this the Carlton we were expecting this year after his respectable freshman year? I loved his energy last night. His hands were good (meaning, his focus was there), and he had plenty of bounce in his game. Bravo!

I’m not worried about our depth in March. I have worried about “hitting on all cylinders.” As long as our top 7 guys all play to their capabilities, we will be just fine in March.

We really needed a game like this and it came at the right time. The game looked grim for a while. Josh went down with an ankle sprain while Landen was in foul trouble. There goes our depth! But wait a minute, not so fast…

  • Is it just me, or are others noticing that Svi seems to be the lone wolf of the team chemistry? I know players have been frustrated with his TOs, etc.,(and maybe prefer Vick), but it sure seems like over the last 2 games, Svi gets no love no matter what he does. Whenever he makes a great pass or shot, I don’t see our players congratulating him., or acknowledging him. I know camera angles don’t show everything, but what I saw in this recent game was a lot of high fives and hell yeahs for the other players making shots or passes, but not for Svi…

Please tell me I’m wrong, because the kid is trying hard, and deserves as much kudos as others when he make a great play on either side of the ball, and he is an important part of this “team.”

  • An Interesting thing I noticed last night, The players huddled up after the time out and it was Josh who was doing the talking to the group and they all looked and listened. After that, they ran to a 19 point lead. Before free throws, Devonte and Vick are the one’s instructing the troops on the court. Landen is the one who use his five years to get angry at another’s failure do to their job. Frank just gets it done. I also like how Frank, after an “And 1” will get up off the ground and stare at the crowd. Finally, re-watch the game and rewind the incredible block by Svi. Yes, Svi.

  • @hawkmoon2020

I noticed Svi getting chewed out by other players in the Baylor game.

Sometimes he does seem like the one outsider. He is the guy that grew up with a different game than what we play here. I think that still shows.

I think the game sometimes goes a little fast for him. My guess is that he overthinks some of the game. He doesn’t seem to overthink his shot, and that is his biggest weapon.

He still misses some switches and definitely hasn’t always given good weak side help. I wonder if language is still an issue?

  • @wrwlumpy

This team is being lead by committee. I’ve always been skeptical of that approach, probably because I come from a more traditional background in basketball.

But I’m not going to deny their success using their approach. I battled to make Devonte into a traditional PG.

I think this relates a lot to our current generation. They seem to not want to be lead by a single person, more of a dictatorship. They all want to participate with a role. Very different approach from our day on the court.

  • @drgnslayr

Svi does a lot of things that don’t show up on the stat sheets. a lot of times he drives, draws the other team in and kicks the ball out and the receiving player is in perfect position to assist an open player and he and not Svi gets the assist even when the entire sequence was initiated by him…just sayin’…

there is a reason why Coach Self is starting Svi but playing Vick almost as many minutes; Coach Self said we have 6 starters and it does not make a difference who start the game…after last night maybe we have now 7 starters.

Also, if you look at most of the top team, except for the teams like WVU that do the press thing, most top teams are now playing primarily with a 7 or maybe 8 man line up.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

Sometimes he is the only guard driving the ball. I do notice that teams aren’t scouting him to drive. He has a much easier path for driving than any of the 3 amigos.

I like to see Svi and Vick battle for minutes. Neither have shown a high level of consistency. It seems like a good thing to make them fight for their minutes.

  • @drgnslayr I’m not sure it is related to the current generation necessarily, but I think it can be effective. We all know Arccidiacono’s leadership role, but according to people who know Villanova basketball a lot better than I do, Ochefu was very instrumental in the locker room. In my opinion, having two strong players on the team is a good thing in case one has an off game.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Ya I heard mention of that last night. - Don’t ask me to repeat the teams, but they mention I think at least 4-5 top caliber teams that was running like a 7 man rotation. - -One thing if you remember I believe it was brought up in the past, seems like more TV breaks, and this and that, and players seem to be able to take a few more breaks, maybe longer commercals and such. Seems like that has been brought up if I remember right.Could help the guys, I’m sure I have heard them talking about this. - -Could be right - -could be wrong. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @wrwlumpy For the past 2 months, I almost cry every game thinking that this is Josh’s last season with us. Can he get in some big trouble and his punishment will be to stay all four years at KU???

  • @jayballer54

Coach Self has always indicated that by conference time he likes to be down to 7 players getting the bulk of the minutes and other being there to spell the primary players in case of injury or foul trouble. I have hear several other top coaches such as Coach K and Jay Wright indicate pretty much the same thing.

  • @nuleafjhawk Wrong kind of trouble?
