Thoughts on todays game

KenPom isn’t perfect KSU is ranked #33 and Dook #2.

Oh definitely, the issue with kenpom, rpi etc is that it’s all just statistical analysis and I do still believe there are things that can not be measured. Plus it can be hard to account for something like KSU’s schedule.

    Faces in the crowd:

On the KU Hoops site there is a picture of Devonte’ and in the background you clearly see Larry Brown.

On the ESPN site there are 4 videos of our game and the one where Devonte’ fakes his man out and throws it to Josh for the one handed slam, when they flash over to the bench Kevin “Fro” Young is sitting there smiling and clapping. The other videos are the highlights, the recap by the two bad announcers, and Frank’s crazy reverse layup and 1!

I’d love to see Kevin Young brought on the staff once he is done drifting around various pro leagues.

  • @BShark Yes I loved Kevin!! and @dylans none of the rating systems are fool proof, they cant predict guy going nuts for 30 or a guy having a bad game.

  • Who thinks self was mad that jj threw it off the board to doke? And did you guys see the Stanford bench guy not give the ball to DG? I was sitting 8 rows behind and missed it. So funny though!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Self has never liked showboating stuff in games. He was visibly ticked about that move.

  • @BShark

Actually strength of schedule is one of the primary factors that all computerized rankings track. Because computers do all the work, it can analize not only a team’s opponents but its opponents’ opponents, location, margin of victory and so on. It takes a number of games before the approach reaches a steady state where one big win or loss does not dramatically affect the ranking. For example Jeff Sagaring has West Virginia as #1, no doubt a result of its big win over Virginia; a little later in the season and the change is not nearly as big.

  • I was having trouble reconciling KSU being #33 Kenpom. #45 on Sagarin which feels closer to correct but we won’t really know until they start playing real teams. Could be that we head into the “sunflower showdown” with both teams only having 1 loss. Of course the schedules are of completely different quality and I’d bet KSU would be 5-3 or worse with our schedule.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 did they show self?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I don’t remember, but commentary mentioned Self didn’t look pleased with it.

  • @BShark Hey, if 180lb KYo can teach kids how to knock a flopper on his ass like he did to 230lb Marcus Smart, I’m all for it. Not much else he can teach other than energy, though.

  • @ralster

Kevin Young was a very opportunistic rebounder and he averaged almost 7 RPG in his senior year; in his freshman year, he played 32 MPG he averaged 7.2 RPG. In his one season in Canada, he was named NBL Canada Defensive Player of the Year for the 2014–15 season.

  • @kjayhawks

Good points, but we did get 20 points and 16 boards out of our C-4 post man vs. the Stanford Woodies!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Not that I recall, but it was a good thing there was no stoppage in action soon after the pass by Jackson. There were enough good things going on to not give Self a chance to rip him right there, but I’m sure a conversation will occur during game film viewing.

  • @dylans I bet he secretly liked it!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 The cameras never went to Self. It was a comment by Fran and in my opinion totally unnecessary. It was a great play by our offense. I would not consider it showboating or trying to show another team up. It was a great defensive play by Jackson to steal the ball. Jackson received a pass up the court from Mason and instead of taking the two for himself, Jackson rewarded the big fella for running the court, by giving him a lob off the glass for a nice slam! Never, have I seen a Freshmen, with the ability to lead as well as follow the way Josh Jackson does. He is a joy to watch and I am so glad he chose Kansas. He makes us better!

  • @KansasComet crowd loved it! Me too!

  • Frank needs to fire his stylist

    IMG_20161205_154955.jpg

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I absolutely loved it as well! Good to know!

  • I was highly impressed with our guards, and highly depressed over our bigs. So there you go. Keeping the faith, just trudging along waiting for the light bulb to go off - c’mon LL…Doke…CB…Coleby, rub some dirt on that leg…LET"S GO!!!

  • @KUSTEVE poor ll, it’s like nothing could go right. So mental. He hustled after that 🏀 And it went off his big ole👟

  • Last game was encouraging for Landen and Bragg. Just keep getting better every day.

  • @KansasComet Anyone is welcome to help us remember, but I don’t recall any frosh ever playing consistently any better for Self here in Lawrence than Josh Jackson. Maybe Brandon Rush or Wigs played as well defensively but Josh plays so steady in all facets of the game that he clearly makes the rest of his team that much better. This young man is a game changer when he’s in the mix of vets we have this year. If we had a big or 2 like we’ve take for granted so many years, there’d be a helluva lot of money on these Hawks to cut down the nets next April, & some of it would be definitely be mine… If LL can just get to last years level of play, this team is prob abt 3-1 shot … JMO

  • Josh is the KU OAD GOAT barring injury.

  • @globaljaybird I like the way you think. We have a great team. We lost one game when the whole team nearly fouled out and that was in overtime. This is another exciting year of Kansas Jayhawk Basketball!

  • @BShark On the contrary, I don’t believe JJ will be a goat at all. I don’t think he’ll ever back down from the last shot as some thought abt Wigs in the Stanford game. IMO we’ve at minimum 3 guys wanting to be “that guy” & it appears they all trust each other. I think Josh is handily raising the bar for OADS at Kansas & very well may be diff to surpass except for a guy like Joel, Wigs, or JJ 👋 himself. JJ is the rare category of player that can impact a team so swiftly that it can 🐱 catapult an excellent team, which we always have, to a team that.wins the NC. I’d love to hear HEM break down how JJ could be utilized in this offense. He’s frankly an excellent X & O guy that always makes me think beyond my old school concepts. I don’t know abt the rest of you but I really miss his perspectives even if I don’t always agree with them.👹 @approxinfinity - any contact?! Shoot him a kite & see if he’s OK ?!

  • @globaljaybird

Goat meaning greatest of all time.

  • The key to JJ’s success is that he doesn’t have to shoot it well in order to play well. That takes a ton of pressure off his offensive game, meaning that he can just defend, rebound and take the offense as it comes. When that’s the focus, being super talented like he is, the offense will come easily.

As for tossing the lob off the window, that’s kids having fun with the game. I hope Self wasn’t too hard on them for it because guys usually play their best when they are having fun with the game, plus you want JJ to reward Udoka for running the floor by letting him get the big slam and the cheers from the crowd. That’s what guys do to help a guy that is maybe struggling a bit. Now Udoka can have that moment and doesn’t go home thinking about a bad game without also having the ovation from the lob come back to him. Guys need confidence, and that slam probably gave Udoka a ton of confidence.

I think KU cruises to 19 point win tonight. Self has them push the pace to an early lead, then lets Mason get some much needed rest. We see Tyler Self get 8 minutes in his dad’s 600th win.

  • @justanotherfan

    Agree.

I was skeptical about the comments about his overall game. Especially with how the jump usually is from high school to college. That was until I read comments about his game from former players. Game knows game, as they say.

  • My percent is now a sparkling 87.5%, as I have now hit my last 7 picks in a row. I pick KU to win again tonight.

  • @KUSTEVE you are just Bragg ing

  • @justanotherfan Players have to have fun at every level. During their beat down of the Pacers last night Curry was going in for a layup. He passed the ball backward over his head to Durant who then stuffed it. The place went wild. It is still a game.

  • The most impressive part is how quickly Josh has adapted to the college game. Most of the time, even great HS players need time to get acclimated…not Josh…👏

  • 19-12-5 for Josh tonight in 28 minutes. That’s on 8-12 from the field. Only attempted one three (which missed).
