We Out Toughed Them
-
“It’s frustrating,” Williams said. “We lost our composure toward the end. Tough plays down the stretch. They out-toughed us toward the end. They did a good job. They did what they wanted to and executed what they wanted to get.”
The soft label is now gone. That was a big boy win. It was grinding, and everything was tough, but we flat took that game away. So, game 1, we play like dog crap the first half, but then we go on an truly elite 22-0 run to start the 2nd half. Game 2, we play in a WWE steel cage match event, and go 15 rounds, before putting away a Top 5 team. We won a toughness contest against a tough team. Elite mentality. They can talk about Dook and the Zags all they want- we’ve got something special cooking here.

Would someone please put together a video of Dok’s 5 fouls during the Tennessee game and add to it the hacking that goes on every time Dok gets the ball In the paint? There is a terrible double standard for foul calling against Dok-at least in my memory of watching the game live. I haven’t watched the game a second time, so maybe my recollection would change. I really liked the passion Dok showed after he fouled out. During the OT timeouts, Dok was shouting encouragement to Dedric. Dok wants to win. I like it.

The last foul on Doke was a flop. Even Bilas said if the Tennessee player wouldn’t have fallen down (read flopped) it would not have been called.
-
Yeah but at least 2 of Dokes fouls were self inflicted on plays he should know better than to do. He has got to lear not to get so wide on screens!
-
Dude can’t help it…he is very wide…
-
@JayHawkFanToo true, but you know what I mean
-
KU needs to take more 3 point shots. Against Tennessee, Dedric took 2, Dotson 1, Grimes 2, Chuck 4 and Vick 7. We only took 17 threes. Maybe it comes later, but I don’t see us setting screens to get Vick and the others open 3s.
-
@stoptheflop You are right. But it will take awhile before we can expect our 3 frosh to be able to set picks legitimately on whoever is guarding Vick tightly. I never want to see the rash of illegal screens we have sometimes seen in past years, especially with the feet-no-wider-than-shoulder-width rule changes. With the inside dominance of Doke and D Lawson, and Doke’s whistle-magnet bulk, it will be hard to get picks from the big guys without risking possession-killing fouls. The balance should develop, though, if Grimes’s shooting picks up and the defenders have to start divvying up their outside attention.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Sorry, I disagree. Doke had no business going for that rebound. It was a pretty clear foul and I called it before the whistle even blew!
-
His 4th foul wasn’t legit, bad pass from Lawson.

You mentioned this already but I must strongly agree. At least two of Doke’s fouls were because of Dedric.

Yea, gotta agree with this. Teaching the freshmen to set screens will take some time. Especially after watching them run into each other on the weave! I think the key to most of this will be Grimes. He’s got the size to pick somebody, but not the brains yet. If and when he comes along, our “team” game will grow more sophisticated. I mean, we did just lose some four-year program guys recently. Not easy to replace. Institutional knowledge loss.

@jayhawkcsg This has been a great aspect lately, passing the torch so to speak. EJ passed it to Frank and then to Devonte. I was worried about Vick being one of the only major returners but it sounded like Graham talked a lot of Dedric.
Tharpe and Greene were essentially booted for culture reasons.
-
@BShark I do remember Vick getting in Dok’s ear before Dok shot FTs. If you doubt Dok’s commitment, just look at him get after Dedric during a timeout in OT. Dok was doing some motivating. Both Vick and Dok are showing some leadership early in the season.
-
@jayhawkcsg I would love to be at the season ending banquet when the staff shows the video of Dotson and Grimes(?) running into each other on defense, which gave the Tennessee player a wide open 3 in the corner. It will draw quite a laugh. We need a good blooper and blunders video of this team.

Zero questions about Doke’s effort and love for KU.

I just rewatched the game from last night. Such a good game!! The refs made some absolutely godawful calls on both sides. But both teams played straight up, nothing really dirty that I saw. I gotta give Tennessee some credit, those guys are real good and they will be title contenders in March for sure. But, so will our guys. Dedric, Vick, Devon, all of them studs. KJ gave us HUGE minutes. And, personally I think KJ should get Garretts minutes. He isnt a liability on offense and he is a solid defender and can defend 1-4. Give the guy minutes! He deserves it after what we all saw.

Even Bilas, who is no KU fan, thought it should have not been called but for the flop.
-
@JayHawkFanToo It was more it had to be either a foul or a travel.
Watching guys fly off Dok is funny. Watching Dedrick bounce off guys makes me appreciate the load that is Dok way more.
-
@JayHawkFanToo I really think u r talking about his 4th foul. I’m pretty sure bilas said it on that one??

Obviously Doke is made of steel.
-
Doke will always get at least one foul called against him because he’s bigger than everyone else.
-
@JayHawkFanToo I think we’re talking about the same play. I heard Bilas say it, but I disagreed with him too. But who cares?!! We won!!

It could well be…
