    • RE: What We Have Here Is a Failure to Compete

MAN you guys jump ship easy.

We got complacent, went on the road, and got out everythinged.

Hard to watch but was incredibly impressed with Wayne’s desire. Also VERY impressed with Wiggins. Think he’s really turned the corner. This is not sarcasm - this is fact. Wiggins could not buy a bucket, no one could, but he kept his head up, kept hustling, and played very solid defense. Other guys were just not tuned in. Na’ must have been blacking out on dirty 6 all night cause he was an absolute no show but other than that it wasn’t because we’re a finesse team or what not. We’re young and went on the road to a loud environment and just got beat. We’ll learn from it. We aren’t soft we just didn’t hit shots, could never get anything going, and the Texas players were playing in front of their first crowd that got over 85 db’s in about 6 years. Think KU football when we pretended we cared.

Phog.net is superior. they love me. I’ve found a new home.

In today’s day and age I think this is needed for the basketball program. Keeping up with the Jones’s definitely plays a part but I think player safety/privacy is the overriding issue. Hearing about the autograph seekers, the people waiting for players outside the towers, people in the towers knocking on doors late at night after a night out. It must not only be annoying but seep into the back of these kids minds that they’re never alone. This should provide some piece of mind.

Very well said @justanotherfan. I completely agree about Hoiberg and Kane’s numbers speak for them self. I think seeing AWIII at the stretch 4 as we did last year is a real possibility tonight - hadn’t thought of that myself so now i’m going to take your idea, tell everyone I know, and claim it as my own. Thanks.

We’re on the same page with Black but I personally think Traylor has the ability to guard a stretch 4 or 5 and I think we’re going to need his energy in tonight’s game. I’m trying to imagine a Tharpe, Selden, Wiggins, White, Traylor lineup and it makes me giddy to think how fast we would be. No one in the country would be able to keep up!

    • RE: ISU

Now all I’m going to do is make up scenarios about what it is that @drgnslayr said. All I have to say on the subject is this - somewhat like Lawrence is a bastion of goodness surrounded by Kansas, Iowa is a bastion of goodness surrounding Ames.

I have been around Iowa State fans for, many, many years and fondly recall being shouted at multiple times as a child, watching Iowa State fans vomit and pee themselves, and listening to a fan base that ENDLESSLY complains and makes excuses. While I have had bad experiences with every fan base (as I’m sure people have with KU) I usually have more positive experiences to hark back upon then negative (even Missery - although I have a sister and brother in law who graduated from there so their friends/family may temper it down when I’m around).

With Iowa State though, outside of the 1 fan I’ve met who I respect, I genuinely have nothing positive to say. They seem to always be trying to prove themselves and continually make fools of themselves on a national stage. I don’t know if it is their announcers who have made their fanbase this way or vice versa but listening to Iowa State radio DJ’s, announcers, or supporters is literally the largest pity party - woe is me attitude I’ve ever heard. I, personally, don’t think that any die hard Iowa State fan has ever truly felt they lost a game. It is ALWAYS the refs fault. I have never met a more annoying fan base in this regard - I can’t even pick a fan base who is in the same stratosphere as Iowa State. It is pathetic.

I could go on and give anecdote after anecdote but it would be a waste of time. The state of Iowa is, without a doubt, the greatest state in the union and sadly we have to claim Lames as part of it. I hope ISU fans act just an inappropriately as they did last year as national embarrassment is the only way they realize they aren’t being “picked on” by other schools - they’re just really that bad.

Naadir has great hair - no qualms there. I am becoming a bit frustrated with his inconsistent play and definitely with his shot selection. Shot selection, in fact, has always been my biggest complaint with Tharpe. His 1 game suspension for playing in a summer league game in Chicago is quite different then illegal activity. Everything I’ve heard is that he was unaware this was a rules violation - if he knowingly knew of the rules violation and subsequent 1 game suspension beforehand and still played then, yes, I would detest Tharpe for his absolute selfishness. Furthermore, Tharpe’s lack of leadership and passion on the court is getting under my skin as well. It’s an attribute he needs to bring the table and he seems to forget that some games. While this frustrates me it does not anger me as he does not act brooding, angry, disinterested, and completely checked out as my friend Brennan does.

Naadir should give Brennan a hair cut.

@truehawk93 - “hate” is definitely a strong word and I mostly use it because I’m emotional. It potentially is better to say I STRONGLY dislike Brennan Greene.

In regards to all the guys you mentioned - no, I never hated one of them. I never even disliked one of them. I’ll admit that part of my hatered is simply irrational and inexplainable - it’s who I am. I will argue though that none of those guys ever possessed ALL of the things I mentioned above. While TT teetered from immature to stupid he sure as heck gave a darn. His issues I think stemmed from an inability to handle success after his freshman season. He was KU’s darling year 1 and fell apart years 2 and 3. Maybe it’s a case of the straw breaking the camel’s back - I don’t know. I expect our freshman to act like freshman so exhibiting some of these things is just part of it. He simply possesses all of them.

Nothing I stated above is an opinion. I gave you my opinion based on my observation. The facts are he is outwardly projecting a negative attitude, he has a pension to take early shots without moving the ball (self has said so himself), he got into a car accident at 2 am (I guess it’s a semi opinion that he clearly was doing something wrong), there are a lot of rumors about the kid, he’s in bill self’s dog house.

A lot of what I say is intelligent observation wrapped in ridiculousness and irrationality. I understand this. You will too in time. While hate is a strong word I feel wholly justified to dislike this kid’s play and attitude at this point in his career. To be quite honest - I don’t see how anyone could like it.

I’m all for cleaning it up a bit since clearly you are on the level of christian comedians and offended by anything non secular or democratic. So, on that note, I will apologize for calling Brennan Greene a twat. I didn’t mean it so much as the dictionary definition as I did the British/Aussie slang definition. I’ve lived a few years abroad and I sometimes forget my favorite unoffensive vernacular in one country can be something completely different in another. What I was meaning to say is Brennan Greene is an annoying cry-baby who has an upity attitude.

    • RE: Did Anyone Else Notice Andrew White's Recently Reported Take on Transferring?

So the NCAA will change transfer rules because it’s the American way? Uhhhh?

You’re thinking entirely too micro in a macro sense. The NCAA covers all sports - not just basketball. They don’t have different transfer rules for all their sports so a change to one would be a change to all. The NCAA itself is not designed to make money but, much like the NFL, MLB, NBA etc. it is designed to make the schools money. College sports is an absolute business and brings in ridiculous amounts of money to our schools - these school presidents hide behind the guise of the NCAA as proof of their amateurism in order to collect all the profit. It is simply the puppet controlled by the machine.

As it stands - I whole heartedly agree with you that the NCAA will have an eventual demise. The reason for this is simply that the big conferences are getting greedy and where the NCAA is trying to hold together a semblance of amateurism the Presidents want the sports business to make them even more money. The NCAA’s eventual downfall will simply be that the smaller schools have just as much say as the larger ones. Look at conference realignment - there are roughly 20-30 schools pulling the strings and the rest are sitting around watching.

So this brings me to my point - as long as the NCAA exists the transfer rule will never change. Why? because the other 300 schools (all who have an equal voice) would be losing there best players and therefore profit potential. Those runs to the NCAA tournament will disapear. The conference title games will simply be a holding spot to get absolutely destroyed by a power conference. The biggest thing to happen in the Tourni would be a 12 seed beating a 5 and even that would be rare. These small schools look at Gonzaga, Butler, VCU and ALL know if they can become one of those schools they’re in line to make MILLIONS - you really think they’d vote against themselves?

I recently spoke with a significant Michigan St. booster about the NCAA while watching the Rose Bowl and he was addimit that the word among AD’s is the inevitability of 6 power conferences. It may be coming sooner then any of us wish to realize. The premise of these self governed 6 power conferences is the same reason the NCAA exists - to make them more money. Cut out the teams who are holding the blue blood’s profit potential back by looking out for their own. Maybe then you’ll see your transfer rule but I’m sure then there will be a clause in athletes scholarships that requires them to pay for their previous schooling or something in order to make them stay.

tl;dr - There’s too much power held by small schools in NCAA protecting their profit potential to allow transfer changes. This will be the downfall of the NCAA. All that matters is football anyways.

Classic joke @truehawk93! Disagreeing with my assertions by slandering me as well and then calling for the board police. Classic pot calling the kettle black - love hypocrisy jokes.

BUT - being that I understand the gist of what you’re asking me I have no problem diving into why I can’t stand him. 1. the most glaring and obvious reason is he reminds me of jaybate 2. He is the anti Tarik Black - it’s only natural. 3. He needs a hair cut.

In all seriousness though - he is my most despised player since JR Giddens and here’s why: First and foremost his attitude. I’ve been saying this about a few guys on the team but he seems to be the ring leader. It’s one thing to not show a lot of emotion (i.e. Perry Ellis) but Greene DOES show emotion. Specifically I remember a turnover in the FL game (maybe different game?) where he smacked the scorers table. When he hits a three he gets excited. When he’s in the game and things are going well he’s high fiving. This is exactly what the team needs and this is why I love Tarik so much but it is Greene’s absolute downfall because, knowing what he’s like when things are going well, you can read him like a book when they aren’t. His slumping in his seat, standing at the back of huddles, complete disregard for his teammates, angry disparaged facial expressions - everything. Everything about his attitude on the bench is attrocious. He’s a classic JJ Berea (yes referring to K.Love’s recent comments).

Secondly - he continually takes bad shots. regardless if they go through the hoop or not I’d love to track how many shots he’s taken that he shouldn’t have. Most of us know that Self ball is dependent on creating driving angles, 1 on 1 opportunities for the big men, and open shots for guards by swinging the ball around the perimeter. He knows this and Self has been vocal about his shot taking but he continues to do it. There is nothing that makes me more furious in college basketball then taking a contested 3 point shot with 25 seconds or more left on the shot clock - especially when you’ve just checked into the game.

Third - He is the first and only Freshman this year to have off the court issues and I’ve never thought that to bode well. He clearly was either doing something very wrong or has an incredible ability not to accept punishment for his actions. You don’t run into a parked car at 2 in the morning and flee the scene if you aren’t doing something you shouldn’t be doing. I get it that he’s young and he made a mistake and that’s fine, totally understand it, but it won’t make me ever condone it.

fourthly - there are WAY too many rumors about this kid. Where there’s smoke there’s fire. multiple scources saying he’s slamming doors and complaining when things don’t go his way. Deleted twitter posts. Transfer rumors. Look at the way he conducts himself as the way someone like AWIII does. Both are surely frustrated with playing time and may transfer - I hear nothing from White’s camp whereas I hear something monthly from Greene.

fifthly - he is constantly in Self’s dog house. In Self I trust.

You make a bad off the court decision, you sulk a bit at a lack of playing time, you say something dumb on twitter, you lose your cool once or twice in the towers, you get in the coaches dog house. Do one or two of these things one or two times you’re immature. You get a talking to and you right the ship. Do all of these things with some of them seemingly multiple and endless you’re crossing a line into my region of hatred.

For his sake and the teams I hope I’m wrong but that would be a first. ever.

I wish I could coherently state why I hate Greene so much but I can’t. The attitude, bad shot selection, and off the court issues are obvious but it’s much more then that. Maybe it’s the disappointment? I remember when he committed being very intrigued by the 4.0 gpa and the involved parents who helped Brennan choose KU because they thought it would be good for his development. I guess when I heard that I thought they were talking about his basketball development but clearly they realized their son was a princess from the get-go. He’s just caught me off guard and I hate him. At least with Rio Adams I knew he was going to be a cancer and disaster from the second he stepped foot on campus - being Roderick Stewart’s half brother there is no way he was going to be positive.

    • I've got a crush on Tarik Black

Sorry @KUSTEVE but it looks like I’m cheating on you. Tarik Black is my GUY.

While his 1 rebound, 1 turnover, 3 foul night is an undeniably sexy line wah gets me most about the guy is how much he cares. He was predicted to play a major role within our team this year but his pension to hack and his overall lack of basketball ability seems to be hindering his playing time. He transfered to KU to get minutes and make a push to the NBA - instead he’s a glorified bench warmer who will be lucky to impact 3 significant games.

But this is why I love Tarik Black - he doesn’t outwardly seem to care. He is 100% all in. He is the first guy up off the bench, he is constantly supporting the guys who are taking his minutes, he smiles and has passion even if he’s only wearing his warm ups. When Selden dove for the loose ball it was Black (along with Traylor who I also man crush on) who were the first to jump up and get excited at the hustle play, they were the ones pounding on Selden’s chest and getting the team into it. Compare Black’s reaction to my most hated player in KU history - Brennan Greene. I literally cannot wait for that *#!% to transfer.

But this is why I love black. He cares. He wants it as much as anyone he’s just not that good of a basketball player. He doesn’t let this realization get him down - he keeps moving forward in a positive direction. He could have easily shut down but he didn’t. The kid graduated college in 3 years and has a wealth of experiences in his 4 year college career. I wish i owned a company simply so I could hire him - I have no doubt he’ll be successful whatever he does in life.

      Greene will probably be homeless.

First off - if you’re a non scholarship player you don’t have to sit out a year in college basketball if I remember correctly. Secondly - a professional coach paid millions is the exact opposite of an amateur athlete. If you want to talk about paying players I’m all for it. 100%. but these are not paid players. Your idea would ruin college basketball and all amateur sports and is literally probably the last thing the NCAA would ever do so it’s a moot point.

If we’re talking best solutions then it is in the form of God Bilas - Let NBA teams draft whoever they want out of high school. Create it like the European system where a team has rights to a player and when they feel that player is ready they can call him up ( I know it’s a bit different but you understand what I’m getting at). Teams are not allowed to obtain rights until after the season has finished and the team has a deadline as to when they need to declare if they’re bringing the player up or not. It would behoove GM’s to be forthright with the schools and let them know intentions early as the last thing they want to do is stunt the growth of the player.

Start letting these guys maximize their earning potential if their employer deems them worthy.

This is the best - and only answer.

      God bless Jay Bilas.

@justanotherfan I would say every coach in the NCAA being against the current graduate transfer rule doesn’t bode well for an entire shift to the NCAA’s platform. There’s too much academic fraud that could take place. It’s one thing to reward a kid for graduating early it’s entirely different to make a coach have to recruit his own players again after every season. Can you imagine how soft the NCAA would become? With the ego’s of kids today any time someone got yelled at they would threaten transfer. It would genuinely be the worst thing that could ever happen to KU and college basketball - it would create two divisions within D-1: The schools where the Relefords, Withey’s, Johnsons, Whites, et all go freshman and sophomore year and the 20 or so elite programs who pick off the best players from these sub D-1 programs as they become good enough to produce at an elite level.

I, for one, enjoy watching the NCAA tournament where a mid major of jr’s and sr’s can make deep runs. A no transfer rule will never happen. I bet the graduation trasnfer rule ends this year or next as well.

We can’t forget that Baylor has Scott Drew as their coach so sustained winning will simply never happen. ISU looks good at home but, then again, when haven’t they? They’ve had a few nice wins against Iowa, Michigan, and Baylor but Michigan was supremely overrated this year and Baylor on the road pulled a classic Baylor on the road so really, the only hard fought game is Iowa. I’d say ISU and OSU have the best shot but ISU’s guys are playing over their talent level and have shown throughout the years an incredible inability to handle success. The fact it is a team of thugs, transfers, and guys kicked off previous teams will come back to haunt them no matter how good the coach is. If Smart is the player of the year then OSU has a chance - if not, we’re a lock for a 10th strait.

HAHAHA this is brilliant! see - now we’re all being uncivil and it’s HILARIOUS. thank you. Back to KU bball:

The one player who has disappeared through all these playing time discussions is Frankamp. I highly doubt he sees more then 4 meaningful minutes the rest of the season but I’ll be damned if I don’t wish he had a 5th year available at the end of his senior year. Too bad.

Civil Hawk - you literally have 20 posts and probably 5 of them are complaining about me and calling me names like jerk and dick. How rude. I personally feel you have broken the only rule on this site as well!

How about you add something rather then just name calling. If you ever had a good opinion you’d be best served to not call someone names - it makes opinions lose validity.

Also - you must be a dupe account with only 20 posts. You always play the rules enforcer card… but what is your other account?? I’m guessing HEM because he seems like the only one desperate enough to do something like that.

KUSTEVE I like you. We can hang out. I personally think it’s our guys not moving forcing our pg’s to create themselves. To ease your mind - when I personally think something that means that is exactly what it is. That is my whole argument stating that PROBLEM is that Frank Mason is the one taking the shots. Good on him for having the balls to do it but if our other guys aren’t going after it then we won’t go far because they are simply better. If Frank gets into the role of “go to” guy out of defference by our other players we’re going to continue to lose games.

Name calling? I said don’t be dumb - it’s simply a statement. I am the best poster on this site bar none. I have yet to see a single post that is even in the same realm of my intelligence. Everyone else’s posts are almost as boring as watching andrew wiggins stand at the free throw line extended while he watches other players run around.

Bill Self is benching Tharpe, calling Wiggins and Selden out to be more aggressive, calling for the team to be more aggressive. If this was an issue of the assistant coaches he surely would not be laying the blame on the kids. We’re simply a boring team to watch that shows flashes of greatness and has the chance to be one of the best. I was expecting up tempo, high energy guys who wanted it. It turns out they are methodic thinkers who aren’t yet comfortable. We have a team of freshman Perry Ellis’ and there is nothing more boring then a freshman Perry Ellis’.

You’re missing my point. Frank Mason is great for this team but the problem is he is the one taking the shots. There are not only better 3 point shooters he is arguably the worst shooting guard that we have. You are 100% on point that this team lacks tenacity and stands flat footed - it is our glaring weakness. If these guys are going to continue to be aloof and not be the aggressors and Frank is going to continue to take control due to his lack of fearlessness we will be an early exit from the Tourney and we won’t win the Big 12. I love his mentality and I sure hope it rubs off on everyone but our problem is our guys are content with watching our worst shooter take the big shots. It’s on them to demand the ball and stop playing bored.

It’s nothing specifically against Frank it’s just that the overall problem is that we have Frank taking these shots in the first place. If our team is going to be successful we’re going to need our shooters to change their mentality and Mason to get the ball up the court, push the tempo, and find our shooters in space. If our shooters want the ball but he’s looking to create his own shot and not get other guys involved we’re in for a long season.

I’m with KUSTEVE. We start losing games and people are looking at player development? Really? Are we watching a different team or is Embiid not the most rapidly improving player you have ever seen? Has Landon Lucas not improved so much that he went from red shirt to people pushing for him to get more playing time? Has an unhearlded freshman PG not been carving out a roll on the team and improving on a daily basis? Has Jamari Traylor not been showing flashes of actual offensive abilities? You look at the guys we were counting on, not performing, and I have Tharpe and Black as 1 and 1a respectively. Wiggins issues are consistency and assertiveness and have nothing to do with development and have much more to do with comfort, confidence, and personality. Selden struggles with the same problems but just really hasn’t looked keyed in to me at all. I have NO idea why that might be the case - it’s the only one that perplexes me.

Don’t be silly and start looking at the player development abilities of a new assistant coach as to the reason we’ve lost 4 games in the hardest non conference in the country playing primarily 4 freshman and 4 other guys who had never seen playing time. We literally have the fastest improving player in the country as well as multiple players carving unforseen rolls and you guys have the gull to talk about player development. Don’t be dumb. We’re young.

Mason needs to temper his lack of fear back a bit. He has hit some big shots and he has missed some big shots - my issue with both of these is why the hell is our worst shooter taking big shots? Having no fear can lead to wrecklessness and a lack of respect for the opponent. Remember the fearless Morri team who got their butts handed to them by VCU? Confidence is a much more important then fearlessness and they’re really one in the same. I don’t want a team over confident the same way I don’t want a team to be completely fearless. It leads to mistakes.

I actually think Self needs to have a shorter leash with guys and yank them instantly if they aren’t on their toes. Self will never be a 10 player rotation guy so let’s figure out those 8/9 guys who want it. I’m fine with guys missing shots if it is a shot they should be taking but when Green comes in the game and shoots a contested 3 with 28 seconds left on the shot clock instead of reversing it to the weak side I cringe - I cringe deeply. I don’t care if it goes in or not I want Brennan out of the game instantly. When I watch Naadir forgo an extra dribble and a dish/close range opportunity for a step back mid/long range jumper I want him out of the game instantly. When I see Wiggins catch the ball and then make a decision rather then knowing where he is on the court/feeling his defender and having a plan the second he touches it I want him off the court. When I see Selden take a back seat and not work for an opportunity and not bring energy when he makes a shot I want him off the court.

If we are rotating the ball, pushing the tempo, creating shots for ourselves and teammates in tempo then I could care less whether or not they fall, but this team just gets apathetic and watches/waits for an opportunity rather than taking it. Everything that gets under my skin about these guys is 100% fixable and has mostly to do with awareness, energy, and making sound basketball decisions. I think the majority of the onus is on Wiggins and I have been beyond frustrated with his lack of consistency this year. It has nothing to do with shots falling it has everything to do with him not utilizing what makes him the best prospect since Lebron - his speed. The guy needs to know what he’s going to do before he gets the ball. If he has a step on his defender he needs to catch and make his first step immediately towards his defender. He has the quickest first step I’ve ever seen yet he never seems to utilize it. If he doesn’t have an angle he needs to swing the ball and get to open space and try it all over again. Our system is dependent on ball movement and when it sticks and we look to create shots off the bounce the entire structure collapses. It’s the reason McLemore was so successful despite the ability to create his own shot - in fact, I can’t remember a single Kansas player who, going into the draft, didn’t have question marks about his ability to create his own shot. It’s not that these guys can’t do it (although Bmac has no off hand yet) it’s that our system is built that they never have to. When we run our high low we’ll either get one on one with a big or the d collapses and we get an open 3 point shot. When we’re in transition we need to force the issue, get to the bucket, and kick it out/rotate if the shot isn’t there.

The ball sticks too much on this team. If guys aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do get them out asap and bring in a guy who will.

On that note - I’m very pro Lucas over Black/Traylor but he lacks the one thing Self says we’re missing, intensity. Black/Traylor are the only two guys who get hype when things go well and if they leave the lineup we could potentially become the most bored team in D-I.
