If they shut down Perry Ellis again, we have no chance.

RE: Time For Self To Kill C5
Did anyone actually watch the last ten-ish minutes of the Tech game?
Definitely slower pace with Lucas in, but I’d say we played more under control with Lucas in the game than with either Bragg or Diallo (and definitely without Greene flying around).
The quarter of the game where you WIN, net production doesn’t matter.
Tied 44-44. What did Lucas do?
10:03 Lucas post layup
8:52 Lucas screen for Mason made 3
8:31 Lucas boxout, fouled on defensive rebound
8:10 Lucas screen on Svi missed 3
6:02 Lucas assist on Selden jam
5:04 Lucas screen for Mason made 3
3:20 Lucas bounce pass to SVI who missed the dunk, made 1 FT
2:25 Lucas screen for Selden’s made 3
1:42 Lucas ssist/lob for Ellis jam
On Devonte’s layup at 1:08 Lucas screened Selden’s guy and Selden would have had an easy dunk if Devonte needed to dish of the ball. By that point the game was won.
Lucas got scored on a couple times in the 2-4 minute range, but other than that, I understand why Self is comfortable with Lucas out there. He knows exactly where he’s supposed to be.
Until Diallo figures that out, it’s going to be Lucas.

RE: Kevin McCullar is returning!!
HUGE. Kev coming back is ten times bigger than any of the new guys, including Dickenson.
I’m not sure if y’all remember how inept last year’s team was with Kev hurt or on the bench. The guy is locked in like a coach on the floor. Juando and Kev + any three other halfway competent players is a damn good team.

RE: Mercy- - Mizzery got blasted
Well, basically this is the same penalty North Carolina got except for the penalties.

Ostertag on Ice
Being a retired professional basketball player sounds pretty rough. Greg Ostertag–bored with golfing every day–decided to become the world’s tallest hockey player.
Interesting quote:
“I’ll be the first to admit that I never reached my full potential as a basketball player. I took it for granted that I was 7 feet tall, and I rode that.”
Yeah, well we all kind of figured that!

RE: Jesus Christ, can we please push the reset button on 2020?
I love the masks. Haven’t had to trim my nose hairs in months! Thanks to my expressive eyebrows and dancing eyes I’m still able to connect personally with people in Menards, Dillons, the liquor store… well, that’s pretty much it.

RE: THANK YOU, JAYHAWKS
After the Miami game, I really don’t understand how anyone gave up or couldn’t watch. I basically told the three people I was watching with to get tf out of my face if they thought it was over at the half. (my wife and our two best friends). They stayed, and it was really quiet for a while. Then we went down to Mass Street and high fived a few thousand people. We’re still friends and I’m still married. It was a risk I was willing to take.

RE: Texas Southern Game Thread
It really is amazing how horrible big men are as freshmen. I don’t know if it’s just that they finally play against guys their own height or if pre-college coaching for bigs is non-existent. Sure, they make a big dunk or impressive block once in a while, but otherwise they’re like a chunk of gravel stuck in the machinery

RE: Team discussion after 10 games
I’m WAY more excited about this team than I expected. I was not happy about bringing Morris to KU, so I’m still disappointed and disgusted about the way that played out. Hunter was a bit suspect to me too, but I’ve been wrong before. (Tarik Black, you’re a good dude)
In order of my happiness:
KJ–the kind of misfit guy I love (Jamari Traylor, Kevin Young etc.) Gives 100%. So, apparently he’s been hiding some handles bringing the ball up the court. Who knew that?
HD–so good popping off that 4-8 foot throw in. Gets rebounds the easy way, in position and doesn’t even jump. Kept his cool mostly so far better than I would have despite being mauled constantly. Seems to be a decent dude.
Kev–great so far, as expected. Best player for post game interviews too.
Juando–Just barely cruising. Needs to amp it up on offense. We have to have that ugly mode guy who can drive and draw a foul. Looks like he’s conserving energy at this point.
5th spot:
ElMarko–hate to think where we’d be if he was running the point, but he is definitely starting to show flashes. Looks better than average hot shot freshman on D. He’s still confident on O despite shooting like crap, so I think it’s going to click in January/February.
Furphy–play him more. I think he’s going to be a freak. Quicker than people realize. Doesn’t hesitate a bit jacking threes. One of those guys who just has a nose for rebounding and is fearless. My second favorite player to watch at this point behind KJ.
Jamari–he’s been big in big games, and that’s along the KJ track of getting coach’s trust
Braun–he’s a man. I don’t sweat a bit when he’s in for HD.
This is a pretty dang good team, folks!

RE: Jayhawks in the pros
I think the NCAA should let Doke come back to KU for one more year.

Favorite play of the season (so far)?
Yes, the subsequent T was stupid, but Cliff actually made his first dunk attempt of the game, and we need the big guys to start dominating… so this is my favorite basket:

Do recruits outside of Kansas really care about the streak? seriously…when has any recruit said i want to go and win big 12 ship and extend streak? nada…
LOL. To quote a recent recuit:
“I want to break Kansas’ [Big 12 title] streak,” Young said. “It’s not going to be easy, by any means, but that’s something that I’m going to be hard on all year. If I would have went to Kansas, I would have been a little bit different, but I wanted to break that streak. That’s my goal. We’re gonna do it. I have all faith in God that that’s what his plan is.”

RE: We've been here before, but after last year, it feels different.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Oh, come on, these days (with early departures) this is the most talent and experience most teams have had in a decade! We’ll have at least four guys starting from day one that know each other well.
We could ride Doke, Silvio and Dotson and a handful of hard working scrubs to the final four. And instead of a handful of scrubs we’ve got Ben the Wild Giant, Prison Mitch, Cool Hands Garrett, MJ 2.O-baji, Euro Slayer Enaruna, a Chicago Sharpshooter Moss … then the young’uns who would probably start on most DI teams.
Don’t kill my buzz! We’re loaded.

RE: Dave
Since I tend overthink things too, miss a lot of bunnies, and dribble off my foot occasionally, I’m tempted to try Dave’s approach to life… if I could JUST get access to the coaches’ steam room and hot tub.
Seriously though. My spousal professor source at KU affirms that Dave is a really smart guy with a bright future, whether it’s in BB or something else. I’m sure pulling for this guy keep playing at his potential on the court for the next 3 months and beyond.

RE: Tejas Game Thread
What I like about this team is having core upperclassmen, promising freshmen talent, and no one-and-done guys!

RE: Feelings On
Big Dave graphic spanning across three windows on the front of Wendy’s in Lawrence (23rd St). They painted the awning crimson and blue too which is kind of weird looking.
Looks better in person… I was driving and took kind of a bad photo.
Not sure what he got out of the deal. (I’m not even sure if Dave eats fast food… heard he was kind of a healthy eater kind of guy.)

totally different team with Kev out there directing traffic on offense and being basically everywhere on the court

RE: Exhibition Game Tonight
I’m not sure if any of us have recovered from the 2019-2020 season ending abruptly. That was the last year I was super stoked about a team to dominate the tourney, but who knows how it would have played out. I was probably higher on the 2022 team than some (Big Dave and young Juando fan), and that year was a pleasant surprise with Remy pulling through at the end.
That said, I think this is going to be a good year–Big ol’ Hunter is going to have to learn to play some D and that will be fun to watch. KJ, Kev and Harris will be solid. And, like any interesting year, we’ll get to watch some young talent figure out how to get into the rotation. Furphy is my guy to watch at this point… seems like he has a bit of a dingo in him.
For all the hype about transfers, it’s really just mostly duds getting passed around to other teams. We’re definitely capable of a final 4.

RE: Is it snowing in Kansas?
It snowed in Junction City KS last night. I stayed at a cabin near Milford Lake on a trip to take some photos of rural schoolhouses. Expected to get some fall color and instead got some wintery shots.

RE: Red Pill or Blue Pill?
It is embarrassing, right? With 24 losses, KU is the biggest tournament loser in the past 25 years.
25 straight tournaments
10 elite eights
6 final fours
4 finals
1 championship
724 W - 145 L (.833 overall since 1989-90 )
No real down years. No NCAA penalties. Two class-act HOF coaches. New branches growing off the Jayhawk coaching tree. Lots of successful graduates and some decent NBA players.
Fire Bill and retroactive fire O’l Roy and let’s have a few 15-loss NIT seasons to improve that NCAA tournament loss record!

RE: Jalon Daniels health
There are a lot of good QBs (and Bean is good–elite speed and a cannon), but there are guys that just have that special rare “it” factor, like Daniels. He’s just FUN to watch. If Bean plays I root for him the Jayhawks, but if Daniels plays I just seem to enjoy the damn game no matter the outcome (e.g. Arkansas game in the bowl last year). Like watching Embiid while he was here… so special and we were denied seeing his potential as a college player.

RE: Hack a Doke/Happ

RE: A VIEW FROM THE COUCH.
I loved how Hosmer got all excited ("Look, it’s us!!) to see himself and his buds on the scoreboard video… Dude, you were just in the World Series and are on TV like 800 times a year. Still just kids is all they are.

RE: Kavanaugh
@bskeet that’s sort of where I’m at. After the main senate confirmation hearings, I disagreed with him philosophically on a lot of issues, but I assumed (and hoped) deep down, he was a probably a decent guy, husband and dad, and worthy of being a SC judge. Go for it. He’s a JUDGE, right?
But that ridiculous display of bullshit Thursday was laughable. He’s from the same high school class as me ('83). I know the Animal House and other movie references, what the drinking age was in every surrounding state in 1982 (nope, not legal) and all the other stuff he lied about for no reason. (Devil’s triangle is like quarters? LOL) If he would have said, “hey, it was an all guys catholic school and we were sexually repressed, trying to be cool and funny with the yearbook,” I would have gotten that because I was young and insecure like that once too.
But, like Maya Angelou said, “When people show you who they are, believe them.” He showed us he’s an entitled prick, who was never held accountable for anything in his entire life.
He’ll get through with enough sham excuses for all the scared republican senators to vote for him, and be a useless joke like Clarence Thomas for his time on the court until, on his way home from a Georgetown pub, he drunkenly smashes his car into a light pole late some night. Hopefully he’s alone in the car.

RE: THE GERMANATORS
Germany is awesome. Local Germans treat American tourists WAY better than we deserve to be treated.
Wandering around Dinkelsbühl a few years ago… we were hungry and some lady was serving food out of her house on the side garden. Beautiful day, local beer (of course), local sausages, and the town drunk was there to entertain us. He probably had the best English in the town and basically only knew dirty jokes. Unforgettable.

RE: 2023 Transfer Portal
I’m going to be pissed if Udeh leaves… already showed signs of elite defense, and we could have three more years of that guy instead of one year of a transfer money grabber. Yuck.

RE: Doke flexible
@Crimsonorblue22 The dog (Gracie) is doing pretty well. Has two more rounds of chemo for her second battle with canine lymphoma, which is in remission for now, but likely to return within 3-6 months after ending the chemo treatment plan. She just turned 8… had hoped to have her around for several more years, but we’ve had a hell of a lot of fun.
Here she is demonstrating the Doke position:

RE: Is the Phog losing its Phogginess?
I was at the game Saturday and it was loud. I forgot my ear plugs that I usually bring, and my ears actually were ringing for half the day. The crowd really got the team going early in the second half when KU made cut into the lead, and then two timeouts (one by OSU and the under 16:00 timeout) took FOREVER. Were those CBS timeouts longer than usual? Total momentum killer. Crowd was “helping” pretty loudly on D at the end, but OSU kept hitting ridiculous baskets at the end of the shot clock.
I saw a few lame ass fans leave with about 2 minutes left who seemed angry that they weren’t going to get the victory they were entitled to seeing. Game wasn’t over at that point, IMO.

When Wiggins did his campus visit I saw his mom in a Lawrence liquor store, and she bought a 6-pack of Michelob Ultra. She paid cash. WHERE’D SHE GET THE CASH?
