by taking all these transfers i think Self is telling Harris he needs to transfer. He might be telling Braun the same thing. you can’t fill a 13 man roster with 13 kids who all think and probably are good enough to play D1 bball. in the past most programs would give scholarships to 2-3 kids who they knew were more “glue” and “program” type kids who would tolerate sitting on the bench. Self is not giving scholarships to any kids like that. the last guy on the KU bench could be a starter at many P5 programs. this is going to be worse than the NBA. the top college programs are going to have different players every year.

RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
i’m not even sure how some of these transfers are going to get a lot of playing time. 13 kids ready to play but only 7-8 getting meaningful minutes means a lot of kids not participating. on most teams the 13 players includes a couple walk on types and developmental players. Bill is loading up knowing some of them will transfer in the not too distant future

KU is now super senior nation
We are soooo loaded - - -Sooo deep - -tons of Scorer’s - Yesufu , Martin- - Lands, - o n certain nights -even Braun. - -now that brings another question ya think with this mor chances then not you think this effects Christan? - transferring out maybe - - just a thought - -hope not
i dont think there will be a lot of transfers out THIS year but after this year several of these players will have experienced what its like to be the 10th/11th best player on a team of 13 legit scholarship players. roughly 1/3 of the roster wont even get on the court despite having the talent, skills, and pedigree to be a starter on many P5 schools. The freshmen will definitely not see the court this year at all and all freshmen should now expect to be on the bench longer than they anticipate due to programs ability to get experienced players thru the portal. Self is going to take as many talented players as possible and then deal with the transfers out when the players figure out there are too many of them on the roster.

RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
a bunch of these players are not even going to play. If Bill plans on using all 13 scholarships that means probably 4-5 of these players are not even going to see the court this year. and Ochai is coming back so there is not much opportunity in the starting 5. The freshmen i hope are expecting to redshirt otherwise they are going to be disappointed.

There will be a spot to fill, and Self will fill it. Wheeler seems most likely right now @Marco
Starting line-up would likely be Harris, Braun, Ochai, Jalen, Dave to start the season. Believe me though when I say I would prefer Braun in a bench role.
what about the transfer guard? why would he transfer here to sit on the bench? that would be stupid

If Ochai and Wilson both do not come back next year is not going to be very much fun. I am pretty dissapointed in how Self handled the portal. Seems like we should have been able to land much better talent then we did.
they are both coming back.

RE: Coaching Search/AD Thread
some program should probably pick off Jones for his recruiting ability. he’s not going to advance at kansas

@Texas-Hawk-10 Unfortunately, money is always the driving factor. I was remembering Duke from a couple of years ago with their first round nfl QB. How does KU get this program turned around? It’s possible; Iowa State and Coastal Carolina have done it.
Well on the way. It’s as talented a roster as we’ve had in a decade. Hire Leipold once (presumably) Goff is on the job. Prosper.
yeah i dont know. finishing at bottom of recruiting rankings does not really bode well. the rankings i care about look at average player rating. if you rank by the number of stars KU is always near the bottom. yes they can and will improve. i dont doubt. but i dont know about becoming a winning program consistently.

RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
how many of these kids are going to be sitting around on the bench next year? there are a lot of players on the roster and more being added.
-
RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
@BShark Self can’t sign everyone. he already has too many players to keep happy. he is going to have a lot of transfers already.
-
RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
@FarmerJayhawk if garrett comes back there are going to be a lot of disappointed players on the team. Self is putting together the equivalent of 2 rosters but will most likely only play half of it. The other half of the roster is going to be in shock when they figure it out
-
RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
@Kcmatt7 its going to be hard to keep 13 good players on the roster. its just impossible to offer opportunity to that many players unless half of them are seniors. There is really not a big need to fill up 13 scholarships because a few of them will end up leaving anyway. it always amazes me how many recruits will continue to sign on with programs that dont really offer much opportunity and its crystal clear. The kid’s hearts are bigger than their brains.

RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
a little surprised on bryce but not shocked. the injuries held him back and i dont think he’s in line for a lot more time next year. he needs to go somewhere he can start and develop and he might be a stud in a couple years. Self isnt going to waste time waiting for someone to develop

RE: Ochai
@bskeet umm no its not. as other posters have said. His minutes and point production might actually go DOWN next year because of all the new bodies being brought into the program. more competition is great for the coaches but sucks for the players.

Och is doing the right thing… testing the waters. He will learn where his game needs to improve. He is nowhere near ready for the NBA. I think this move will help him and KU next year because he will focus on improving his weak areas.
He’s going to have to be a lot more aggressive in his play and put up bigger numbers… especially in crunch games.
no he’s not. he’s been focusing on improving his weak areas for 3 years. his numbers were just fine this year and probably wont improve much. Self plays a team offense that will spread the scoring around and still focus on Mccormick. I believe Och will always be a very solid player but always be a secondary scorer on any team. i think his draft status next year will look very similar to his status this year. He probably should have left after his freshman season when he was in most mock drafts based on his future projections
-
RE: Ochai
@Bosthawk nah me neither. i think this is simply a case once again of players wanting some spotlight and attention that comes with the announcement. then they find out they would be the 65th pick and they come back. this is now almost an annual announcement for almost any P5 starter. it doesn’t even mean he doesn’t already know he’s coming back

RE: Yesufu to KU (Drake PG Transfer)
@tis4tim well obviously its better for Self to have starting talent sitting on the bench. but none of them except maybe Lightfoot considers themself a bench player. and thats what will result in some transfers once some of these recruits figure out they miscalculated their odds of getting significant playing time.
-
RE: Yesufu to KU (Drake PG Transfer)
@BeddieKU23 the roster is going to go 13-15 deep with players who are all legit or better P5 players. a whole bunch of them are not going to play. a whole bunch of them are going to be disappointed when they figure that out. Self isnt messing around and trying to keep players happy. there will be a number of unhappy players because Self is not doing it Roy’s way. Roy would get 7-8 legit dudes then surround with role players. Self has a dozen guys who could start at most schools. so half of them are going to find out they aren’t starters at kansas. Bryce may not play much this year either. self is bringing in guards who are expecting to play. they can’t all play a lot. honestly i can see bryce transferring if he doesn’t beat the transfers out for playing time
-
RE: Jalen Declares For Draft
@AsadZ jalen isnt going anywhere. this is routine procedure for most of Selfs players
-
RE: Ochai
@Fightsongwriter what’s the percentage of players who dont hire an agent who come back to school? i dont know but it seems like its fairly high. If the player has doubts you can be sure the NBA has doubts. He isnt going to hear what he wants to hear next year either.
-
RE: Ochai
@bskeet ochai is what he is. he hasn’t improved that much in 3 years. another few months is not going to change him. he will be in the same position next year as he is this year. if he wants another year of college fine, but he’s not going to improve his status much. He hasn’t the last 3 years. the word is if he would have left after year 1 he would have been picked higher than he ever will after hanging around for so long. it looks like it was probably a mistake by draft measures to not leave after year 1
-
RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
@BeddieKU23 he will probably go undrafted next year too. so there could be an argument to get out and get his career started sooner than later. thats the best way to make money. he wont by a top 60 next yr but he could get a spot somewhere and work his way on to a team this year

RE: Bill Self Emperor of Kansas
@drgnslayr this is simply a marketing and recruiting tool. Kansas intentionally labeled it a lifetime contract to send a message to recruits. it is no more a lifetime contract than many other similar contracts given to coaches. kansas needs to send a message to recruits so they opted to call it a lifetime contract. that doesn’t mean its any different than other contracts out in the market that no one ever bothered to call a lifetime contract. if bill self wants to leave he will leave. if ku wants to get rid of him in 5 years they can.
