Big mouths

  • Big Mouths

WVU’s Miles just told the press UK will be 36-1. I HATE it when these kids shoot their mouths off before a competition as in calling out a specific team. I think WSU’s chances for a win just went way down.

I still remember one of the Morris boys told a VCU player " the streak stops here" right before the tip-off. You don’t think that kid fired up his teammates with that statement.

I love confidence-just keep it among your team mates.

  • @JayhawkRock78 I have never understood how a player stating that his team is going to beat their next opponent is bulletin board material. Now saying that “we’re going to beat them because their team sucks and I will own anyone the put on me” is board material.

As far as the Morris boys, this is just trash talk. It happens all of the time. It may make the player to whom it is addressed play a bit harder, but at the same time it may make the talker play better so that they can justify the trash. I credit our bad 3 pt shooting against VCU as more of a factor than trash talking.

  • @JayhawkRock78 That was a West Virginia player that made that statement, not a WSU player. Freshman guard Daxton Miles.

  • @oldhwkfan Yeah - I didn’t think a WSU player would mouth off like that.

    Only their coach.

  • @oldhwkfan Sorry for the typo-I meant WVU.

  • Speaking of Big Mouths… who’s ready to watch Calipari get punched in his tonight? I’m so amped. Come on HuggyBear!

  • @approxinfinity Now that would make me VERY happy.

  • @sfbahawk My father raised me to work hard and compete hard, but not cheat during competition. Cheating is rampant today-the attitude is do it if you can get away with it-look at all the jersey holding or holding of arms all the time. He also told me to keep my mouth shut. The same thing with my coaches. Take care of business and no smack talk-better no talking to them at all.

  • @sfbahawk Sorry I wasted your time-so how many times have you heard a player say that about a team that has a 36 -0 record.

I too credit the 3 point shooting of VCU, but is trash talking smart?

Maybe you can find a prominent coach who instructs his players to do it? I don’t think it is a smart thing to do.

  • After Twins trash talk to VCU, didnt Self say something like “Well now they have to back up the talk”?

  • @ralster I don’t know what Self or anyone said after that-but if they said anything at all it didn’t matter. Heavily favored KU went home and VCU advanced.

I’m just glad I told friends and family DO NOT buy air plane tickets before the weekend was over. My father even pressured me to buy game tickets and I refused having been down this path too many times.

  • @JayhawkRock78 You were wise! Hmm, who do you have in the NC game…?

  • So much for WVU

  • @ralster Honestly I didn’t even fill out a bracket this year. As exciting as it was to get Wiggins & Embiid last year we fell short. I was hopeful this year-again we are out early. So,I never bothered with a bracket. I guess my high school kids are making it all up due to the void.

  • I really hate to say this and I mean nothing by it, but I wouldn’t be too disappointed if Selden, Oubre and Alexander followed their NBA dreams. It would get rid of the fluff and at least give KU a chance to bring in better pieces. They just didn’t quite click. The chemistry never mixed.

I’d like to see Diallo, Newman, and maybe Brown or Ingram. Brown or Ingram would be just in case #14 decides to cop an attitude. I’m not too happy with his effort and attitude. It’s sad because the kid has sick potential. He’s sand bagging and hurting himself and the team. BG better pull his head out and play ball. He needs to show up first day of practice a new man, new purpose, and focused. This lousy body language has got to go.

So either we land 1-2 recruits or we may not get anyone else. If Self is going for the UNC Charlotte kid, hopefully we’ll bring in Diallo and have a nasty front court.

Speaking of nasty front courts, but it seems to me Dakari Johson has fallen way down. He’s not done anything with Calipari’s platoon system. Johnson is the least improved on the UK team. He’s horrible.

  • link text

John Calipari to “make a push after the NCAA Tournament”? You mean make a bid? Calipari doesn’t make recruiting pushes, he makes recruiting bids.

link text What’s more, Thon Maker is a big UK lean.

I have to admit, if we have a chance for both Diallo and Maker, I’ll take them. Why not? Calipari sure as hell will.

  • @JayhawkRock78 Wasted my time? Sonny Liston was like a 36-0 team when Ali went on a rant. Didn’t seem to harm him. Larry Bird doesn’t appear to have harmed his career and he was known as one of the best at trash. Not saying its great and nobody coaches it but is happens a lot and always has. If you can’t back it up, you look like an idiot.

Cheating is rampant today. It always has been within parameters for each sport. You would obviously be appalled watching the NBA or NFL or MLB back in any day. Most players in any sport know what is “allowed” and what is not. Pulling on a jersey and undercutting someone on a layup are totally different and everyone knows that.

Why do you think they have referees and umpires? Why do you think that there aren’t a lot of clean layups made during the NBA playoffs?

  • You are right-and I think it is sad.

I am old school and taught my children, and anyone who played for me to play by the rules. I never approved of cheating. Just because it is out of control doesn’t make it right.

That is why I loved track and field. Time and distance in front of everyone every time. Everybody knew the champ. And drug testing fixed the cheaters.

  • @sfbahawk I will add something more. You said you were a manager for track in the 60’s?

Did you see Jim Ryan pulling on Jerseys? Did you hear coach Timmons telling his Runners to do it???

You are pissing me off, because I competed for KU track AND NEVER HEARD any coach or athlete suggest it or admit they were going to do it.

It may be more common today but that doesn’t make it OKAY as long as you can get away with it.

I live on a golf course and have a lot of damage to my home and cars by balls hit out of bounds, There are signs in the clubhouse they are responsible. Is anyone held accountable when I report -golf cart # , hole #, at 1:20 pm today? NO. The clubhouse says yes we have a sign that they are responsible to damage to private property but they won’t even confront them when I report it?

When I coached kids I benched them for a cheating foul. Not an honest foul-but -when they did something dirty or obvious like they knew it was wrong and did it anyway.

There is not enough accountability today in our culture.

  • @sfbahawk So how is the 78-39 score looking to you now as not " board worthy" from a kid saying a 36-0 team will be 36-1 tonight?

I still think it is very stupid for a kid to make that statement before playing a team that has one of the best records in college bBall history.

I am not not a,UK fan, but more, than anything I don’t like people who make outlandish statements before the fact. If you must do some bragging-do it AFTER you’ve made something happen.

  • @JayhawkRock78 Sigh. What in the world does pulling on a jersey in the lane when you are beat have to do with Timmons not telling his runners to pull on a jersey. If you don’t think that there are some sharp elbows flying around when someone is boxed in and is trying to get out then I don’t know what to say. Is that the way the rules are written? No. Does it happen? Yes. Are these people all dirty?

As far as the WVU kid. Do you really think that there were 10 people on earth outside of WVU supporters that thought that they would not get stomped? Charles Barkley spoke about the kid and said that if a coach were to use that to amp a team he would think he was nuts (not exactly a quote).

I’m not sure why I’m pissing you off but what the heck. Assuming that you played pickup basketball, did you call every foul on yourself when you went for a rebound and hit someones arm? If you dragged your foot pivoting, did you immediately give the ball to the other team? If not, why not?

I’m sorry that your home and cars are damaged by classless golfers but what does destroying property have to do any of this is a mystery to me.

  • @sfbahawk It is lack of accountability and what you can get away with. Our culture isn’t what it was. Dent a car in a parking lot and don’t leave a note. That’s the world today.

When I was a kid and broke a neighbors window I had to apologize and then measure it, go buy a replacement at the hardware store and replace it.

Sports have changed. Even at my teenage daughters level. It is what you can get away with until the ref will finally make the call after five trips up and down the court. And coaches and parents must be teaching it.

If cheating is okay in sports-then kids will think it is okay in the classroom,

  • @sfbahawk I apologize for writing “pissed off”. I over reacted by writing that and I’m sorry.

This stuff is a real sore spot with me that goes back to my upbringing and my skin is real thin because I see it every day. Texting and driving isn’t against the law yet but I see it everyday in Houston traffic. And so on.

  • @JayhawkRock78 I agree with you 100% on the whole accountability, cheating, general disintegration of the morals in our society and I agree a bazillion percent on the texting and driving thing. I am normally a pretty mellow fellow and don’t get too worked up about anything (other than KU losses) - UNTIL I see some reprobate, communist weasel, lowlife scumbag, A-rod texting and driving. And I don’t care who I offend on here. I don’t want anyone taking my life, or my family and friend’s lives for granted. Don’t F-ing do it. Nothing you have to say is that important. It will wait. And if it can’t - pull over, put on your flashers and then send your BFF the message that you will meet them at the 50 shades of grey movie later.

Crap - I can already FEEL my blood pressure going up. Sorry for the rant.

  • @sfbahawk

“Sonny Liston was like a 36-0 team when Ali went on a rant. Didn’t seem to harm him. Larry Bird doesn’t appear to have harmed his career and he was known as one of the best at trash. Not saying its great and nobody coaches it but is happens a lot and always has. If you can’t back it up, you look like an idiot.”

The thing with having a big mouth… it’s all about if you can back it up. Like you said, if you can’t then you look like an idiot. A marginal player playing on a marginal team going against easily one of the most stacked college teams in recent history was just plain stupid.

At least what it showed us was how good UK really is. They didn’t throttle back on this game.

We may play bad ball… but Kentucky plays ugly ball. There was no entertainment value in watching that game, whatsoever. And if they do that in the championship game, the nation is going to stand up and get even more hateful towards the Wildcats and Calipari.

I wonder… in Calipari’s sick concept of “perfection” he has it in there to be hated by 99% of humanity? Probably doesn’t even enter his sick mind.

College basketball is a sport… meant to be a competition of like teams.

I wonder what will happen if this multi-zillion dollar business starts losing hoards of fans because the fans are sickened by Kentucky’s mutilation of D1? What then? Kentucky fans don’t care. They aren’t about being sporting they just want to hammer the world. Let’s them forget about where they live… in a third-world country.

That game last night was sickening. I don’t want to see Kansas ever on that level. It then fails to be a sport, just a lynching.

I was hoping Huggy would freak out in redneck mode and pop Calipari right in his fat Italian nose on the handshake.

  • @nuleafjhawk

" And I don’t care who I offend on here. I don’t want anyone taking my life, or my family and friend’s lives for granted."

I’m with you on that. A friend of mine lost his teenage daughters because they were texting and driving. In most countries now it is illegal. Many countries you aren’t even allowed to be on a handheld phone while driving. In Europe, you will get heavily fined and you get a bunch of penalty points towards losing your license.

  • @JayhawkRock78 texting and driving is against the law in ks, I thought everywhere. I saw on the news a study yesterday that talking and texting were the 2 biggest causes for wrecks in teens. It was on national news.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 They banned it here in Austin in Jan. with a 3 month window to get a warning but that has NOT stopped people from hiding the fact that they are doing it. On top of that they CAN do it if stopped at a light so now you have idiots holding up traffic while they sit at the light. The TX legislature did just pass a State-Wide Ban but seriously as big as Texas is - even just the 4 large metro areas - there aren’t enough cops in the world to enforce anything. The governor still has to sign it into law and Gov. “Oops” Perry did not sign it 2 years ago.

And I did have someone bang into my car in a parking lot just last week and drive off without fessing up to it. $900 damage just like that. Try to have something nice and someone is always trying to make sure you don’t.

  • We all know UK’s first loss is going to come in the Final Four. Am I allowed to trash talk since I’m not on the team?!!

  • I wish you were right, sox. Kentucky won’t lose a game this year.

  • @wissoxfan83 Talk away. I was critical about a player going public with a comment prior to playing his opponent.

  • trump.jpeg

    Another infamous big mouth.

  • @Blown Maybe that’s TheDonald saying “You’re FIRED!” like he means it…lol.

  • @Blown

Well they’re about to face their toughest competition all year in either AZ or Wiscy, and I believe Duke in the final. ND has been a giant killer this year too.

  • @wissoxfan83 Hope it is Frank The Tank!

  • @Blown

    “Another infamous big mouth.”

    YEECH!

Donald Trump… the guy that has uninformed spectators believing he is a business man. Here is a guy who has basically spent up $4 billion of his daddy’s money. I believe his inherited wealth was something like $6.5 b, and he has wasted it down to $2.5 b. Bet his dad rolls over in his grave every time his kid opens another failing casino or silly building with gold TRUMP letters on it!
