Here is a good shot of “The Diesel”
Pro Bowl selection (1975) AP First-Team All-Pro (1983) PFW NFL Comeback Player of the Year (1978) 1983 NFL MVP (MX) Super Bowl champion (XVII) Super Bowl MVP (XVII) NFL 1980s All-Decade Team 2× Jets MVP (1972, 1975) 2× NFL leader in rushing TDs (1983, 1984) 10,000 Rushing Yards Club 80 Greatest Redskins Redskins Ring of Fame inductee (1990) Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee (1992)
“Riggo” was the talk of Lawrence back in my days on campus. There was (and still is) plenty of lore about him including the infamous story about him lugging full kegs of beer on his shoulders up the hill from The Hawk to The Wheel (on icy roads). He definitely has “legendary status” in my book.

Yes, it is KSU but still…pretty spectacular…

To @wrwlumpy and to the rest that contributed pics to this thread…
Thank you, thank you, thank you…you just proved to me that this broken down old ex-pat Kansan has not grown dementedly sentimental about his old homeplace and its beautiful space and remarkable persons.
This thread of pictures come closer to capturing the Kansas I know and love than anything else I have read or seen.
Rock Chalk All Day Long!!!

John Riggins was to sport what Ken Kesey was to literature.
Riggins could easily have become the next Clark Gable in film, had he been vain enough and set his mind to it.
-
-
True… and imagine the Hollywood lore that would have followed him.
Centralia has never been the same…
-
The truly great leave lore…and giant accomplishments.
In high school running for touch downs during games and playing tuba in the marching band during half time.
Running a 9.8 second hundred yard dash weighing 220 pounds in high school track.
And then all the inconsequential accomplishments like the Orange Bowl team of '68 and leading the Redskins to a super bowl.
The beauty of the great is that their giant accomplishments dwarf their lore.
He is just an awesome human being, who has finally turned the fusion that burned within him to a nice comfortable fire with his loved ones now.
Rock Chalk, Riggo, you made it without compromising.
We should all be so lucky!!!

Here is a nice read on the Menninger Clinic… gone from Topeka.
Famed Psychiatric Clinic Abandons Prairie Home
My grandmother had a few stays there. She said she “hob-knobbed” with Clark Gable and several other huge celebrities. It was THE psychiatric clinic for the rich, elite and famous (and many that weren’t, like my grandmother). Probably because it was in the middle of nowhere (spoken like an east or west coaster).
-
P.S.: I would give almost anything to look like that picture of Riggins, even just one day of my life. Imagine looking that way EVERY day. All man. Self needs to have Riggins come in and meet the team. Even the residual of Riggins in later life would be worth it. The man’s life force is as contagious as the common cold.

I hear they play some really good basketball in that city too.

@wrwlumpy - Thank you SO MUCH for this thread! I really appreciate it. I had forgotten about all of the movies and celebrities and it was great to see those again. The pictures are STUNNING, especially that nature shot of Samantha Ryan! lol And I had no idea that ET was from Kansas.
Seriously, I get more aggravated than I should when I hear “outsiders” talk about how flat and ugly Kansas is. We have areas of incredible natural beauty - like most states. We all have some good and some bad.
Thanks again - this is great.

@jaybate-1.0 so who remembers his brother JR? do you? I do. Love the Riggins
-
@jayballer54 JR was on the KU track team when I worked for it. He was a competitor but did not have John’s skills. It must be kind of tough to have your younger brother get all of the pub. Really nice guy.
-
I think Bobby Douglas taught John and Junior how to drink.

On their way to cousin Audrey and Eddie’s in Central Kansas. Clark Griswold has a sandwich.
-
@wrwlumpy Inigo Montoya?! I’ll be damned.
-
@wrwlumpy didn’t cousin Eddie live in Coolidge ks?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Yep
-
That is the creepiest photo of Obama and Sebelius. It looks like he’s going in for the kill!
-
@wrwlumpy I loved that movie as a kid.
-
@jaybate-1.0 Riggins has an outdoor UTube channel. I forget the name though I posted it a while back. Google his name and you’ll find it. He hunts, fishes and pontificates. Too good!

Thx, will do.

Wasn’t seven angry men about the players Self shortens his bench to in April? Or was it about the guys that get left on the bench?
-
Speaking of the Jayhawks, we went to the Austin Spurs D League game to celebrate my husband’s birthday and an elderly (90s) gentleman sitting a row behind us at the far end had a Jayhawk hat on. He was with a guy probably in his 50s. A noteable playing for the Spurs team was former foe we faced – Deshaun Thomas (Ohio St) – and for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers were BIG Josh Smith (Georgetown) and Aqeel Quinn (San Diego St.). Sherron was not on the Vipers team and was not listed on the roster either even though he was listed there several weeks ago. After the game we headed out and while waiting for my hubby to get out of the restroom, the old man came by so I hollered RockChalk Jayhawk. He was from Prairie Village down visiting his grandson. I showed him my Jayhawk earrings I had on and he said he had never seen the likes of them before. The grandson had travelled to see 2 USC and one UCLA game and to SA for the 08 championship. We talked about going to Houston in April!!! Always fun to meet a fellow Hawk fan.
Josh Smith had to change his shorts after the start of the game as his shorts kept falling down when he was running down the court! Was too funny. He weighs 350 now.
-
@RockChalkinTexas where’s Sherron? I think working out to play bb is all he does. Sad if it doesn’t work out.
-
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Thanks. I got the wrong team. Forgot about that one.
-
Read the Sherron story. Well, when Sherron decides to move beyond playing professionally, then maybe he could be “Snacks” replacement. Snacks was a former Self player at Illinois. Sherron Collins was a former Self player…but nothing but an explosive McDAA, one who starred at KU from Day 1, and literally is directly responsible (along with Mario Chalmers) in helping KU win a National Championship. He would bring all the credibility needed & earned to sit alongside any college coach on the coaching bench.
-
I still remember Sherron’s farewell speech in AFH. Did anyone maintain a dry eye after that?
There are plenty of guys out there who have skills to bring to the Kansas bench, but who could bring more heart for being a Jayhawk? That is a very tangible plus that can’t be artificially generated. Sherron is the real deal. I believe he could bring heart to every Jayhawk team… and with heart comes an easy path for building drive to win, and sometimes even a big chip.
