Kensucky practice

  • It’s on espnu right now, 6-8 pm

  • Can cal be there? Didn’t see him. Just turned it on though.

  • He’s there! (puke)

  • Interesting UK has its first practice on ESPNU on cable, and by what the analyst are saying, sounds like they have been there for more than one day and the broadcast sounds like an infomercial for UK. KU gets its flagship Late Night on ESPN3, internet only…and blacked out for the entire state. Advantage UK. 😞 😞 😞

P,S, Cal is there; practice officially opened last Friday.

  • Disgusting. He never stops looking for a recruiting advantage though… Wonder if ESPN approached Cal or visa versa.

  • @ajvan as far as I’m concerned he’s ruined college bb.

  • ESPN owns the SEC network, so a lot of self promotion, or some (including me) would call it major conflict of interest)

  • @ajvan

Why exactly is this disgusting? Is it because our AD is not smart enough to do it and instead negotiates a stupid contract with TWC/Metro Sports that blacks out the entire state? Considering all the national publicity they are getting, I would take their AD anytime, he seems to be much better at marketing the program than Zenger.

That would solve the Adidas vs. Nike problem…

  • I didn’t watch it. I am a Jayhawks fan!

  • @JayHawkFanToo Because it’s Cal.

  • @KansasComet I was scouting!👀👀👀

  • @JayHawkFanToo

I believe this gets into my topic of how much our current football program is costing all our sports. A big chunk of it is money and fundraising. I bet we have to fight harder to raise capital for our entire AD largely because of the problems we have in football.

I don’t think people realize how much time and effort is put into KU fundraising. All universities do the same thing, but I believe we have to fight harder for contributions because our football program stinks.

At least… that is the impression I was given at a KU fundraiser by Zenger himself.

  • @drgnslayr it’s more than SZ can handle!👋👋

  • @ParisHawk

KU’s contract with Adidas is almost twice as large as Kentucky…and when you consider that the equipment Adidas provides is counted at wholesale cost (~50%) of retail) and the equipment Nike provides is counted at full retail cost, then the contract is well over twice as large.

    @drgnslayr

UK’s football program is nothing to write home about, although they did beat MU this season and they seem to do fine financially as does KU. KU’s football program does not seem to affect the apparel contract and KU’s contract with Adidas is over twice s a big as Kentucky.

As far as fund raising, watching the stadium Saturday with less people than there were for the Spring practice does not help; if I was a recruit, I would not want to come to KU to play on an empty stadium either, regardless of how much playing time is available… I understand the team sucks but having an empty stadium does not help improve the program. Frankly, I laugh when people claim that increasing the capacity of the stadium to 80,000 would improve the program; even during the Orange bowl season I don’t believe the stadium was ever fully sold out .

If Zenger would find exposure for the main sports programs on National TV instead of getting exposure for the minor programs on a regional sports channel and in the process antagonizing the majority of fans, then maybe there would be more interest and more funds could be raised.

Thinks about it…why would I contribute to and AD that goes out of it way to block me from watching the sports I really want to watch?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I saw it was on. I just wasn’t interested. Hopefully, you got a good feel of how they look? Were you impressed?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Good Deal. I didn’t watch it, so I wasn’t impressed either!

  • @KansasComet you knew I was going to say that?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I would not expect anything less!!

  • @JayHawkFanToo

“Thinks about it…why would I contribute to and AD that goes out of it way to block me from watching the sports I really want to watch?”

True… but also… would you contribute to a program that is the complete laughing stock of D1 football?

I had heard lots of donors had stepped up in recent years and wrote big checks…unfortunately all of those contributions (and then some) went toward the early buyout of three head coaches!

  • @drgnslayr I would to build program up. See Baylor! Nothing for loser SZ!

  • @drgnslayr

I would if I saw that if, IMHO, the direction of the AD is the right one for the football program; I just don’t see SZ having that priority. Zenger’s priority seem to be building up the smaller, non-revenue producing sports at the cost of the big revenue producing programs. Traditionally, football is the biggest revenue produce at most schools and even at KU, the program is in the black…and even Zenger is smart enough not to mess with basketball.

Frankly, how many people really give a rat’s a$$ about women;s rowing, golf or tennis? The only reason they even exist is because KU needs female participation to comply with Title IX; there are more women’s than men’s sports at KU. KU’s Athletic Budget has a surplus, so lacks of money is not an issue.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

Universities and ADs don’t operate the way they used to.

It is ALL about money. It is run similar to a corporation. The real shock is in endowments.

Why do universities need so much money? I know they need money to operate and to develop. But seriously… I’m not sure, but I think KU has assets over a $billion!

Every year I get hit on and it feels like panhandling.

I look at universities now the same way I look at big corporations. They suck in huge amounts of capital out of our economy and where does it go?

When our economy fell in '07-'08… where was big corps? They were sitting on fat, fat equity, and most still are. Was it just “riding the storm?” And the ones that weren’t had their hands out looking for a gov bailout. Couldn’t they have played a bigger role in “stimulus” instead of having our gov go in more debt to stimulate the economy with a “stimulus package?”
