Going to Memphis

  • I have a ticket for the game and will be in Memphis from the 26th-29th. I’ve never been to Memphis before so would appreciate some ideas on things to do while there. I’m going to the Suns/Grizzlies game on the 27th and will probably go down to Beale St. after the game. I’m also planning on going to the Civil Right Museum.

I’d like ideas on some other things to do while there. Sight seeing, places to eat (I’d love to go to a top BBQ place there to see how Memphis BBQ stacks up to Texas and KC) or anything else that would be of interest to a first time visitor.

  • Have a great trip and enjoy the time.

    I like your MLK quote.

  • Graceland! The Civil Rights museum is really well done. And it finishes on a horribly memorable note as well. The pyramid is kind of cool although the last time we passed through it’s just a bass pro shop, but has an overlook near the top. The riverside park is pretty cool. Has a replica of the Mississippi and kind of a cool long footbridge all the way out there, but i think you can drive out there too. Peobody Hotel at dinner time when the ducks walk in is unique also. Have fun at the game. If we’d played Missouri I might have driven there for it.

Most of my knowledge of Memphis though is driving by MANY times on the 15 hour trip from Baton Rouge to Chicago which we determined we did 52 times during our 11 year sentence to Baton Rouge.

  • Only been once, but there is a good bbq place near the Peabody. The name escapes me. I ate at several decent bbq places, but that one stacks up well. (Greatly prefer KC bbq)

    • I need to come up with the name. I believe the ship on dry ice. I’d like to see how that stacks up to Joes shipped. Hard to get either one without a boatload of travel.

  • @dylans Rendezvous is probably Memphis’s most famous BBQ joint. (famous ribs)

  • @DanR This BBQ joint was walking distance from the Peabody (the ducks at the PB are cool!) The owner was just awesome. Very personable and knew his BBQ! I didn’t have an opportunity to eat at Rendezvous. The other places I tried were just ok.

    1. KC BBQ
    2. Memphis
    3. Texas

Grew up on KC BBQ. Still trying to adjust to dried out Texas BBQ.

  • Sun Studio is good in Memphis.

  • KU related event schedule for those making the trip https://www.instagram.com/p/CmHxF7DunQS/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

  • December 27th is a tough travel time (as in desire to travel). Hope the stadium gets packed!

KU’s already sold out their allotment of tickets so the KU side at least should be packed.

  • @wissox They have these things called airplanes, bro.

had heard KU fans were seeking additional tickets - -that’s a good thing if they can get them
