This is just crazy and selfish

  • Hope they can get him to Utah.

  • @brooksmd global needs a pal for rascal!!! Maybe the lady had dementia??

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Surely something is wrong with the thought process. Sad to think one can appear that selfish.

As much as dogs benefit from interaction with another doggie playmate, it is too much responsibility at this point with Rascal being so young & active. Just changed the avatar recently again to a new pic of him climbing his favorite “Squirrel Oak.” He really is a doll & I would hate to chance a change in his behavior. Never in 50+ years of having furry four legged friends have I had one that sleeps all night long, & I’d hate to screw that up.

  • @globaljaybird but, if he could go to a great dog home, it would be your house!!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Thanks. The quality of life is what it’s about for us. We have our jobs, our interests, our friends, our lives. All they have is us. They provide us with their undying friendship so how can we do less? Just my opinion.

  • I don’t think this is all that uncommon. My wife’s grandmother asked us to put her dog to sleep when she died. Luckily the dog died before she did.

It’s a shame. For every elderly person like this, who understandably couldn’t bear the thought of her dog missing her and/or wondering where she is, there is likely another elderly person or couple – lookin’ at you, mom and dad – who lost a beloved dog and think they are too old to bring in a young pup.

Vet bills pile up pretty fast for older dogs, so pony up about $5,000 along with dog to a good home. Could be great matches for everyone involved.

  • @DanR Really it’s not. My Boxer, Dad’s Handsome Woodrow is buried just 100 feet from my back door. I talk to him often. Before we adopted Mom’s Little Rascal, daily for about 3 months. @brooks md once told me, “They’ve all given me back the piece of my heart that was lost when they’ve left, so maybe some day my heart will be as perfectly as loving as theirs.” That’s PHOF if there ever was one.

  • @globaljaybird 😭😍

  • If you have no family or friends you trust that will take pets, it is a very tough call about what to do.

Many parts of America have shelters that are night mares, while the dog is alive and death camps due to slim chance of adoption.

Owners like this woman mean well. They don’t want the dog to suffer in their absence. They figure they will find someone to take the dog before they go and the will is just a worst case scenario. But as persons get old, their dog becomes their sole source of comfort, and their world shrinks and their minds dement, and before they know it they don’t trust anyone and it is everything they can do to just muddle through dying themselves.

At least this woman cared enough to specify one outcome, or another.

The world is full of dogs that just get abandoned, left on a side of a road somewhere, or are just not fed until they go wandering a way looking for survival.

I am very sad for Bela, but her mistress may well have done the best she could do.

The thing here is not to blame the late owner, but to find a remedy.

I do not know one yet, but I will think on it and I know others here will to.

  • @jaybate-1.0 There is a second option but apparently there is a financial problem. She specified a no-kill shelter in Utah which has said they would be happy to take Bella. It’s getting him there that’s the problem.

@globaljaybird I wish I could take credit for the saying but I can’t and haven’t been able to find out who did. Your old brain came close to repeating it. But here it is:

“It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.”

  • @jaybate-1.0 Many parts of America have shelters that are night mares, while the dog is alive and death camps due to slim chance of adoption.

Several shelters on the local level just transfer dogs between them & advertise as “no kill” agencies. It can be heart wrenching to see inside & when you do go to see an orphan, the viewing generally takes place in an area or room without other dogs & you don’t see the conditions they are kept. Some are absolutely starving. Rascal was skin & bones when we brought him home around 45 lbs. He is about proper weight now at 65-70. I don’t believe he was mistreated as he is excellently house trained & other than jumping up & scratching you, really has no behavioral issues that we can see. Still has some stubbornness which is normal for the breed, but will get in his kennel for treats & a toy. Has not had any accidents either in home or the kennel & sometimes he’s there for 8-9 hours. I’m still just flabbergasted that someone let a dog as well trained as this go. Must have been no other option for the owner. Boxers are not for everyone & unless they get plenty of exercise they can be a holy terror cooped up inside. But they do not live long lives if kept outside-is too much strain on their physiology as they cannot regulate their body temperatures properly. Can have heat strokes at 80 deg & go hypothermic at 25. We walk a mile twice daily, weather permitting & still have a couple of very active playtime sessions to boot. And man are they jumpers! My 500 ft perimeter around the house is 6 ft high & if he realized he could get a good run at it, would be over it fast. One is a good handful & two is a major undertaking. Mom has mentioned getting another but as much as I love them, nixed that very quickly.
