Royals 50th Anniversary, Hank's 45th

  • Hard to believe it’s been exactly 50 years since the very first Royals game at old Municipal Stadium. Lou Piniella went 4-for-5 as they beat the Twins 4-3.

I skipped school to see the game…Unfortunately I missed the end 'cause it went into extra innings and I had to catch the last bus back to my neighborhood.

The ballpark was only half-full for the season opener, around 17,000 in the stands. (Considerably fewer than that tonight at the K for the game against the Mariners.)

Exactly five years later to the day, I sat in my dorm room at KU and watched Hank Aaron hit his 715th career homer for the Braves to break Babe Ruth’s record. Still the legit home run king as far as I’m concerned.

  • @nwhawkfan cool story!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Fortunately my HS was within walking distance of the ballpark.

One of the teachers almost caught me skipping school. The next day he asked if I skipped after 3rd period. I said no. (I actually left after 4th period.) Years later at a reunion I fessed up, and he just shook his head in mock disgust.

  • @nwhawkfan funny!
