New State, new moniker, Same old KU Basketball

  • Ok so maybe not quite the same KU basketball. But it is basketball nonetheless. I am living in Vermont now and adjusting to being so far away from KU is not too bad but its different. The games are an hour later here which means I have to stay up later watching games. Since Im not local, it seems as though I might miss a couple non con. games due to ESPN not covering some of those games. Fridays game is one of those.
Anyway, I dont know about you guys but I remain hopeful that KU will be much tougher on D than they were last season. Sure, we dont have the rim protectors we are used to over the past what, 6 years? We didnt have that blocking presence in 08. Traylor, Alexander, Lucas and Mickelson will all be fighting hard for KU down low. I liked how Mason, Devonte’ and Selden handled the ball last night. I hope they can keep it up. I liked how they plus Greene shot the ball too. Hope thats a trend as well. Svi couldnt buy a shot last night but when he lights up, look out. That is assuming of course he breaks into the rotation with enough minutes to get into a flow.

  • @Lulufulu

Hope you are adjusting well. Vermont is such a beautiful state. I live in Pa, so only get to see the team occasionally. Have tickets for the Temple game in Dec.

Anyway, ESPN 3 is showing the game on Friday. At least we on the East Coast won’t get blacked out.

  • Beautiful state indeed.

I think it’s a slap in the face to go to ESPN3 and see it blacked out. Most of us pay for ESPN in packages which includes internet. We should get those games. Now it hasn’t impacted me thus far, and hopefully won’t later, but I have missed games in the past.

  • @wissoxfan83

What makes it more puzzling (read that stupid) is that only the State of Kansas and the KC Metro area get blacked out on ESPN3, and short of having Time Warner or Comcast (with the optional package), you don’t get to watch some football, and more importantly basketball games. It looks like KU has not only endorsed these two providers but it is actively marketing their services and forcing you to move to them; something that seems very unseemly to me. Yes, we do get a lot of money from Adidas, but they do not force you to wear their gear in order to watch KU. The Athletic Department does not even get any money for this stupid arrangement, they just get “in kind” programming that is of interest to a miniscule portion of KU fans.

I am waiting to see a TV add with Zenger pointing a finger saying “I want you as Time Warner client; if you want to watch your beloved Jayhawks you better switch…”

    I STILL HATE ZENGER…

  • @JayHawkFanToo that number is growing!!!

  • @Crimsonorblue22

Zenger haters of the world unite! We have nothing to lose but our TV blackouts! - Karl “JayHawkFanToo” Marx.

  • @Lulufulu

The thing about Vermont is that the heavier snows will make it easier to put off doing things and watch KU Basketball.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

Did you read where Zenger is negotiating to black out the entire basketball season in a quid pro quo for getting funding for renovating football facilities to bring them up to par? 🙂

  • @jaybate-1.0

Up to par with whom? The New England Patriots? KU football facilities have already been upgraded and are comparable or better than the other conference programs. You can go on and on and on ( you will likely do that anyway) but it would help if you can show a scintilla of evidence that supports your assertions, not that I am expecting you to address the actual topic…

    Here doggie…yap, yap…yip, yip, yuk, yuk…backfill here…

Did I get that right? No malice intended, of course. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Now I will go back to acting my age…

  • I’m impacted in no way by Zengers inane decision but I’d loathe the man too, because I know how I’d feel if I lived in Kansas.

  • If you’re feeling the burn of ESPN3 blackouts, find a free VPN to connect to outside the blackout zone and use that to launch ESPN3. Free VPNs are really slow, but ESPN3 only checks where you’re connecting from when the stream launches, so you can launch the stream, then disconnect from the VPN and enjoy KUBBall at normal broadband speeds. That’s what I’ve been doing to watch the exhibitions and late night. Time Warner can kiss my butt as far as that goes.

  • @konkeyDong

I am not sure that works for all providers any more. As you know, your provider has to be a subscriber of ESPN3 and to access it you have to indicate your provider and sign with the Id/password of your provider which in time allows ESPN3 determine your location. At least this is the way it works with Consolidated Communications/SureWest in Olathe, Kansas.

My ISP provider does subscribe to ESPN3 but when I sign in, it immediately tells me the KU game is blacked out for my area. There are a few Eastern European feed that will re-broadcast the ESPN3 feed, but they are getting a lot better and smarter at not letting you in (like they did last year) unless you download their plugins…which are carriers of all kinds of viruses. Just not worth the aggravation anymore.

ESPN can determine who your provider is, but they rely on your IP address to determine where you’re viewing from (their contract for broadcast rights is based on where the viewer is not where their subscriber is located). So you set up the VPN but don’t connect, then login to ESPN3, and you’ll get the blackout message. At that point, connect to the VPN. ESPN has already authenticated you as a valid user, but checks your IP and sees you as being in Florida or Chicago (you need to use a US location because they don’t support European cable networks). After you launch the stream, disconnect from the VPN (cause it’s godawfully slow) and the stream will continue sending data normally. I’m one Consolidated in OP, but it hasn’t been an issue for me.

  • @konkeyDong

I thought I tried exactly what you described and I was unable to get it to work.

  • @jaybate-1.0 I am planning on learning how to ski and snowboard here but when KU basketball is on, that’s all I will be concerned with 😉

  • @konkeyDong Was that english?

  • @Lulufulu Not sure -sounds like Bruce Banner talking to Tony Stark in Avengers.

  • @JayhawkRock78 LOL! My thoughts exactly
