Coach Self

  • pretty interesting article, and a rather concerning thing or lack there of that can quite possibly be yet another way that can end up costing us if we don’t make strides improvement and that’s - - -Free Throw attempts. I knew we were not doing a good job but didn’t realize it was as bad as what the article brought out.

The article starts out that there is a trend now that in the last 4 consecutive non con seasons where KU has dropped from the previous season.

In 13-14 Ku went from shooting 30.3 attempts per game in the first 12 games of the season to the next year to 25.4 attempts and then dropped to 23.2 attempts in 15-16 then to 21.8 in 16-17 as far as attempts in the first 12 games of the season.

Self said it’s not so much that they have declined as to by how much they have declined this season. – Ku at the present after the first 12 games of the season - - - are you ready? - -after the first 12 games of the season -KU is averaging 11.8 per game - -not for a half - -but for A GAME. - Self says that is 10 fewer then last season almost half the attempts as we attempted in 15-16.

Now put this in perspective. This year there was a 4 game stretch we KU attempted 34 free throws in a 4 game stretch - - -" 34 " - - -" 34 " - that is nuts. - -you put that in comparison to where KU attempted 34 free throw attempts in a SINGLE game 8 times during the previous 4 seasons - -again " 8 " different occasions where we shot that many in one game in the previous 4 seasons - - -huge drop of.

Coach Self reason is obvious and it would be easy to fix - -BUT the question is he said who do we have that can fix it? -The answer is drive the ball, he says Devonte does it some but other then that - -we don’t have a Frank Mason or Josh Jackson, he said.

Coach states that in the Nebraska and Omaha game there was a TOTAL of 17 free throws - - -17 ! ! ! - -he there have been a lot of times in the past we shot that many in a half, and with the way they are trying to emphasize keeping your hands off the body they mention you would think it would be a bigger total for sure. Coach said when is the last time a KU team in two consecutive games shot a total of 17 free throws, - - In the dam Stanford game we shot a total of TEN - -TEN for the entire game. Now he said because of how we played the Stanford game it wasn’t as bad - -BUT when the shot is not falling in a closely contested game - - like he says ummm.

Going into the Omaha game Malik - - -Malik had shot a total for the season – 11 free throws - -11 fricken free throws on the year ! ! ! - - and he stated that Dok our big man the animal had ONE - -you hear that ? - - - -ONE - -ONE free throw in the LAST FIVE GAMES - - -ONE FREE THROW from your big. - -now to me that might be a blessing in disguise because of his % but I understand for sure what the Coach is saying, you get one free throw attempt from your post man in Five games - - Come on man that is beyond ridicilious . Now all of that is not Dok’s fault for sure, it can be a combination of things, it can be part Dok’s fault foe not working hard enough to establish, then it can also is partly the rest of the guys fault for not looking and trying to get Dok the ball inside when he does post up - we settle a lot for the jumper.

When it’s all said and done there is going to come a time where our lack of free throw attempts in a game is going to cost us and it’s going to cost us big unless we get it fixed. Let’s just hope it’s not down the line in the NCAA and the result costs us another early exit in the tourney - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • I want Dok drawing fouls, but can we get a substitute ft shooter for him? I guess if they are and ones and KU rebounds well it would be an advantage, but I feel sorry for Dok when he’s on the line. It’s just painful.

  • What about a link to the article?

  • @whipperboy73 He may not have mentioned another aspect of our low FT attempts: opponents have attempted 42 more FTs than we have this season.

  • @whipperboy73 I hear you. I really do. Something tells me that when Preston and De Sousa get on the court, our game plan changes, our team changes and our FT’s go up. Both guys can knock down FTs. I think that both guys can bring that fire in the paint that we need to increase that number.
But if not…well you said it. That’s one reason we will get bounced from the NCAAs early.

Not that I’m already looking forward to next year, but we will be absolutely loaded and I am betting all those stats that are down this year since we are short benching, will go up next year because we are gonna be STACKED!!

Lets see how this plays out.

    ROCK CHALK!!!

PS. Why did you change your name? I liked the other one 😉

long story about the name change but might go back lol. - your right though not trying to look to next year BUT I think your going to see Coach go back more to his favorite 3 out 2 in with our frontline next year. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @Jayballer54

    Glass half full.

Shooting so few FTs makes us less vulnerable to whistle asymmetry.

  • @Jayballer54 Hell yah he’s gonna go back to 3 in 2 out!! Hell, he’ll be able to field a team literally ANY way he wants to. I still think he keeps playing a small ball line up next year too, Just to mess with the other teams. Its too effective offensively and it makes other teams prepare for waaaay too many scenarios if KU can play with multiple line ups and not skip a beat. They’re gonna have that next year! Rock Chalk!

Ohh yah! Dammed whistle asymmetry. Nearly forgot about that one.

  • @Lulufulu @jaybate-1-0 I always thought whistle assymetry had to do with the way my grandfather breathed those last few years…

  • Well, just heard Coach Self’s interview, he said as follows:

Coach Self said in an interview that’s it’s going to be a couple of weeks AFTER De Sousa get’s cleared which would mean the Iowa St game more then likely before he could help us. - -Be able to play and help at all even if they just had a couple of in bounds plays and listed some others, but at least a couple of weeks before he could help us.

We will not be as good or will be or can be until February , We are not a team that’s anywhere close to being a Championship team in our league - - - not even close , we make so many mistakes - - -our energy level is still average , we need a couple of guys to step up and inject energy into this team.

Then the what has become so common statement we hear about Billy:

I feel much better in at least some what of an answer even if it’s not a definitive one at least on what our next step will be with Billy soon. hmmmm , man we have heard this answer concerning Billy before. I just think it sure is looking less and less about Billy. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • I am willing to go out on a limb involving these first 3 games vs TX schools. Without this eligibility thing of our power forwards resolved satisfactorily, we are bound to lose one of those contests. And hopefully, no more than one. Even if Preston and/or DeSousa gets cleared, they must play in the neighborhood of 100 minutes before they reach full stride. And FULL STRIDE is a most subjective assessment, considering they will eventually take the court in the shoes of FRESHMEN…if indeed this season they ever take the court at all. Now approaching the hour to hang onto jock straps, hope to avoid cold shooting outings…and defend, defend, defend. The word GRIND steps to the fore.

  • Coach Self had a nice piece in the LJW today. - He says he thinks a 13-5 record in conference can or will take it free and clear this year. - Talks about the conference being a lot tougher, It’s gonna be a war. - -he says once again the big thing will be to derfend home floor, and if a team can go like 4-5 on the road will be in a good position. - -I’m ready to start the REAL SEASON ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY-

  • @Jayballer54 What does he know? We know more than him. 5 losses will not win this conference this year.

  • I’m not so sure about 18-0.

That could trigger NCAA to penalize us for Preston practicing. That would leave us 0-18.

    Maybe 17-1?
