Charge Dismissed Against Bragg and Case Filed Against Soofi
On Friday, December, 9, 2016 officers were dispatched to a 911 call from a female claiming that Carlton Bragg had struck her and pushed her down stairs. Upon arriving to the 1000 block of Emery Road, officers made contact with Saleeha Soofi. Soofi claimed that she was in an argument with Bragg in a stairwell and during the argument, Bragg punched her and shoved her down the stairs. The officers photographed an injury to Soofi’s elbow. Later that morning Bragg was interviewed and acknowledged he was involved in an argument with Soofi but he denied striking her. Consistent with Lawrence Police Department policy Bragg was placed under arrest.
The District Attorney’s office reviewed the 911 call, initial investigative reports, in-car camera video of statements given by Soofi and photographs of Soofi’s injuries. At the conclusion of the review, the District Attorney’s Office found there was probable cause to file a complaint against Bragg.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on December 9, 2016, Soofi was requested to come to the Law Enforcement Center to further document any evidence of injury. During this encounter Soofi indicated she may have struck Bragg first during the argument. An interview was conducted and at the end of the interview pursuant to Lawrence Police Department policy Soofi was placed under arrest for battery.
Lawrence Police Department detectives became aware that a surveillance video possibly existed and returned to the scene on Saturday, December 10, 2016 and recovered a video. Review of the surveillance video depicted a male and female in the stairwell of the building engaged in an argument. The video depicts a female shoving and slapping the male in the chest numerous times and placing her hands near the neck of the male on at least two occasions. After being struck by female, the male forcefully shoves her away from him causing the female to fall backwards up the ascending stairs behind her.
Based upon the additional evidence available to the District Attorney’s Office the charge against Bragg has been dismissed. A one-count complaint charging battery has been filed against Soofi. If approved by the district court, a summons will be issued for her appearance in court.
All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Charges are merely allegations of criminal conduct.

@mayjay I did not. When the charging docs arrived to my office I stood up and said there is no way Carlton would’ve done this. The coworkers went negative. Now we know why the dude was smiling in his mug, cuz he knew he wasn’t 100% fault in this case. This will make this team so much stronger. I only hope Carlton matures into the man that he’s destined to be. And stays away from the crazy ones… it’s not worth the hassle.

I remember that let down as well. Same feeling as when LB left. I attended “Roystock” and led the charge onto the football field to celebrate. I was front row and listened to Roy say, “Well, I’m staying.” I never thought we could replace Roy, but we’ve traded up. I believe Roy would’ve gotten us two titles eventually, but I expect HCBS to get at least two more in the next 5 years (3 if we were a Nike school).

I complain too often about the cold/hot weather, lack of beaches and no mountains here in KS, but having this team, coach and winning streak in the upper right corner of the state seems to far outweigh those natural wonders.

@jaybate-1.0 WAY OFF TOPIC: Have you ever read the book ‘Ishmael,’ written by Daniel Quinn? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishmael_(novel) I have to admit to enjoying your posts that lean just a bit outside of the realm of ordinanry sports talk. Presses my squirrel brain to think a bit outside of the box, much like the novel I mentioned above.

ON TOPIC: BMAC would be the 4th option on this team, but would probably be the leading scorer 1 out of every 3 games.

I feel sorry for Carlton and the girl involved. She’s obviously going through some things and given the unfortunate news about her brother, I can understand her struggles. That being said, I can’t get over the fact that he was so quickly charged and she was released simply to be charged a few days later while the charges were dropped against him. Doesn’t seem like proper justice. His mugshot will follow him forever and there will always be some people that doubt his innocence simply because they’ll Google his name and see a mug shot. It’s possible he did something that upset her, but there’s no excuse for this to happen. I can only hope they both learn from this… she can’t lie and he has to avoid these situations at all costs. This is one Probable Cause Affidavit that I’m looking forward to reading.

Kansas sophomore forward Carlton Bragg Jr. will transfer from KU, Jayhawks men’s basketball coach Bill Self said Thursday.

“We appreciate Carlton’s efforts the last two years at Kansas,” Self said. “We certainly respect his decision to pursue other opportunities. We wish him nothing but the very best and hope he is able to reach his dreams and goals.”

“I really enjoyed my time here at Kansas,” Bragg said. “Kansas has the best fans and I do love the program. This past year didn’t go as well as I thought it would and it’s in my best interest to get a fresh start. I want to thank my teammates, coaches and the fans for all their support these past two years. I will always cheer for the Jayhawks.”

Bragg averaged 5.4 points and 4.1 rebounds in for Kansas in 2016-17. The 6-foot-10, 240-pound Cleveland native started the first five games of the season and had five games of 10 or more points his sophomore campaign. He scored a career-high 15 points twice against Siena (Nov. 18) and against TCU (Feb. 22). He posted his lone double-double of his career with 11 rebounds in the Siena contest.

As a freshman in 2015-16, Bragg averaged 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds for KU. He had two games of 10-plus points and six contests with five more rebounds his rookie year.

I think about this often, but I wonder if Biid sticks past his rookie deal? With the talent on the team and the possibility of another young stud joining the roster through the draft, I can’t decide if he should stay or go. I’d love to see Philly relevant again and have a KU guy that gets the credit. Who the hell knows, if I ran the team I’d probably be after HCBS. I guess we have two seasons to figure it as I believe Embiid has two seasons left on his current deal.

Here’s a @jaybate-1.0 kind of response. Again, I apologize being off basketball topic.

I’ll couch this by admitting to not being an avid reader of anything other than news, sports and odd reviews about tools or gardnening. I do, however, attempt to pick an interesting topic each evening and spend time researching as I ready for bed. Last topic was simply, “where did all the buffalo go?” I learned a street in Topeka was once paved in crushed buffalo remains and there was an entire industry powered by what was left of the carcasses. People made money by simple picking up the bones of these beautiful beasts after railroaders and hunters killed them to starve the Indians out of their homelands. Back on track… I decided to tackle Ishmael at the request of a dear friend. The book grabbed me and spoke to me in a connected way. At the time I was struggling personally (several years ago) and from the moment I started reading I was caught.

A 4th of July injury I suffered as a boy still makes reading lengthy passages difficult, but I powered through Ishmael. I was tested intellectually, forced to not believe and then believe. Quinn (or the Gorilla) really seemed to engage me in a philosophical conversation that I fearfully enjoyed. Quinn’s take on the agricultural revolution and the Takers and Leavers society seemed legit. As I’ve always shared a bit of the white man’s guilt of my ancestors helping to beautify and destroy this great country. The stories of the leavers and takers were basically the natives (leavers) and the Europeans (takers). Heavy agriculture eventually damaged some land, but did feed people. The topic of Cain and Able proved God favored Albe’s meat sacrifice more than Cain’s harvest of crops. This forced Cain to be jealous of Able until he commited the first murder. Ishmael taught me that there was some order in the lands involving those native habitants. Natives didn’t outgrow their property boundaries. They simply didn’t reproduce when they didn’t have the resources to support the larger population. The book also eluded to bumber croops from Nebraska being sent to feed the hungry in Africa in later years and ultimately forces the reader into answering whether or not it’s such a good idea to keep this population fed, but barely surviving.

To wrap… being a guy that enjoys reading about early America and phylosophy the book was spot on. I need to read it again, but if a book about a man speaking telepathacally with a gorilla is good, it’s simply great. Also, when that man (main character) seems to be as lost as I was at the I was reading this, it was perfect. Thanks for asking @jaybate-1.0

@JayHawkFanToo I’ve sorted through thousands of mug shots and this wasn’t a courtesy job to KU or Carlton. I don’t know why, but not every mug shot involves a chart and ID number or name.

I interned for KK and Whitlock years ago. Not to defend the two, but they couldn’t have treated me any better than they did way back then. Kind of fun listening to them now after all these years. One reason KK was miffed had to do with UMKC and how they cut bait with their guy while KU simply suspended Bragg. He was also upset that UMKC was calling it a Title 9 violation, I think.

Not Soofi’s car as mentioned by @Crimsonorblue22. The listed victim on the vandalism report taken by the Lawrence Police Department is/was a member of the athletic program at KU.
