@Texas-Hawk-10 still someone is going to have to step up and decide that they aren’t going to get punked and bullied. It is a mindset that they must have in order to make a deep run. Any of them have the potential to be that, they just don’t know how to or that they can.

RE: What a waste of a talented guy
@sfbahawk once again, WE ALL KNOW LOSSES HAPPEN. I have never thought any of our recent teams were going undefeated. The fact that we were dominated in several areas when WVU didn’t even play well along with no hint of any in game adjustments from Self with this being a talented and experienced was very disappointing. Do you think we were doing fine and didn’t need any adjustments? This will be a lesson for them to not be scared by the defensive pressure and be tougher. That’s the point I’m trying to make.

RE: No excuses! Mason
@Crimsonorblue22 Game in 2014 with Wiggins. Got outtoughed and showed little fight at Texas. Played tougher the next time and blew them out
-
RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@jaybate-1.0 I agree with your theory. To paraphrase, Self said post game “We were full of ourselves”. I agree. I think these guys were too confident that they didn’t compete hard enough. And it showed.

RE: No excuses! Mason
@hawkmoon2020 I would agree with you, except we have lost there three straight years, and had similar losses the last few years to Stanford, WSU, and Texas. He obviously is not preparing them correctly for defensive pressure.

RE: "Fool's Gold" makes its debut
@MoonwalkMafia Sadly, I just do not see it with him. I have been saying that he needs to do some self reflections, but it appears as though he has only slightly adjusted. He can do it. He has the intelligence to do it. Otherwise, we will only get a final four every four or five years, maybe a championship every ten to fifteen years. Considering how good many of his teams have been and all the talent and experience they had, those numbers, imo, are too low, unless some think the 2010 and 2011 teams weren’t any good.

RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@sfbahawk I get your point, but do you not think that this loss is eerily similar to the WSU game last year? WSU did not play an exceptionally excuted game. As dragonslyr has noted, they were the aggressor and played with a chip. WSU wanted to win more. They applied defensive pressure, and we crumbled, just like yesterday. Is that not concerning to you? I am not trying to be negative, but seeing how nothing has really changed in that department says a lot about development and coaching. What is preventing a team in the tournament from doing the same thing? Oh well, I guess, if the other team beats us again in March. They played better right? Just happens. Self never got outcoached. You know what, the players were tired! That’s got to be it! (sigh)

RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@Hawk8086 I hear you, but a one seed has helped us a grand total of 1 time. Maybe it would do these guys good to get a 3 or 4 seed.
-
RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@sfbahawk You miss the point - it is how we lost. None of us on here expect KU to go undefeated in the Big 12. That is unrealistic, especially against so many good teams.
The fact that they were outtoughed, outcoached, and had no in game adjustments from Self is why many, including myself, are displeased. Everyones best effort was not on display last night, including Self.
Really, in regards to getting to the final four, winning the conference is not important, Recent teams that made it to the final four have proved that. But it sure leaves a sour taste in my mouth when guys are getting punked and beaten badly all game and nothing is done by anyone. Inexcusable.

RE: No more Practice
@HighEliteMajor I wondered that too about Mickelson. We got it down to four then Self took him out. I also thought Diallo was decent in his time out there.
Have you noticed the look that Self has a lot of times on the sidelines during games like this and against WSU? Looks like he is sitting there mad about what is happening instead of scheming to get back in the game. Maybe we expect too much, but I will never believe that the players are that inept and unable to make simple in-game adjustments. I am not in the huddle or in the locker room to hear what he tells them, but I just have a hard time envisioning that the players are not talented or skilled enough to at least calm down and make smart passes and also strategically scheme against pressure defense. I am really at a loss for how this happens repeatedly and yet nothing is done differently.
Yes, I know, we have a good record and we will get a high seed in the tourney.
But does any of that even matter if Self and co. can not figure out this problem that has plagued us the last few years as well as in 2010 and 2011? How is it that the team, in the biggest game of the year, can not bring 110% focus and determination? Why? How much more talent do we need to get to the final four? Sorry for the rant - I am just confused why this is happening time after time.

RE: It doesn't have to be one way, or the other here, does it?
@drgnslayr the sissification of America - all by design. Sad to see.
-
RE: Chicken Little
@wissoxfan83 yeah, the no-fight aspect is what has me troubled. Looked like a replay of the WSU game. Sorry to say, but when a team pressures these guys, they can’t handle it. Sweet sixteen at best this year.

RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@DCHawker another tactical coaching error. Did coach even watch the WVU-UVA game?
-
RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@jaybate-1.0 others might think so, but I don’t believe everything hinges on the refs. Also, fouling Williams did nothing, as he made most of his free throws. There was more that could have been done in game that wasnt.
-
RE: "Fool's Gold" makes its debut
@KUinLA I noticed that too. Hasn’t done his best coaching last few years. Maybe he is thinking about the NBA. His effort was equally as poor as the players.
-
RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@justanotherfan you would think after four years Lucas would have at least one offensive move. I personally don’t think it has anything to do with talent. Any ideas?
-
RE: "Fool's Gold" makes its debut
@cragarhawk I’m not sure that going with experience was the problem. Too many bad passes and fouling cost us the game.
-
RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@jaybate-1.0 yeah something strange was going on. Really strange to see that from mason
-
RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem
@AsadZ as usual, no in game adjustments. Are his players that inept or overmatched by the opponent that they couldn’t do what he wanted them to do? Unlikely to me
-
RE: "Fool's Gold" makes its debut
@HighEliteMajor agreed. Just more excuses from Self blaming everything on the players, as if he is totally helpless from the sideline
-
RE: How does KU respond to getting kicked in their junk?
@Texas-Hawk-10 he looks like the only one who wants to go to the final four.
-
RE: Three straights years
@drgnslayr maybe that is the problem the last few years. Guys think they were good in HS or have a high ranking and think they don’t have to try. They are very soft
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@wissoxfan83 I feel the same way. You would think they would have a little more motivation after having their behinds handed to them by Stanford and WSU. Guess not. Also makes me wonder what goes on in practice and timeouts.
-
RE: Three straights years
@jayballer54 yep, they need to get off their high horse and realize they need to stay hungry.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@Crimsonorblue22 less individual play, more ball screens, quit driving into four guys in the paint, move your feet and quit reaching, and box out your man and push him to the concession stands or you are going to sit on the bench.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@Texas-Hawk-10 so coach doesn’t work with them in practice? He doesn’t get to talk with them in timeouts?
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@DCHawker exactly. Coach has to do a little self reflection, man up, and admit he himself could do better. We should have won this game. WVU is not a good offensive team and we made them look like a title contender.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@globaljaybird I know that losses happen, but it is the way we lose. Looked like the WSU game. These guys crumple when even a little pressure is applied. This team will not make the final four if they play panicked from pressure. Coach has to work with them because it is a toughness thing.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@truehawk93 a lot of it is because he wants to do everything one way.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@truehawk93 I agree. Zone would have been perfect. No one wants to believe me, but this one is on Self.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
Sad to say guys, but we might have to wait till next year when our guards finally mature and make better decisions.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
We had every opportunity and didn’t take it. Except Perry and Landon this group is soft and they lack poise and smart decision making. Coach did not calm them down like he should have in the first half. Reminds me of a first weekend game. I also don’t buy the conditioning crap.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@SkinnyKansasDude I don’t mind losing, but it is the way these guys are playing. Defending without fouling, smart decisions, good passes, not dribbling into traffic - intangibles. Should be there even on a bad shooting night. No excuse
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
Embarrassing effort. Have they been coached at all on defense?
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
We can’t win if we foul every time they have the ball
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
Need someone bigger to guard williams. Fouls are really hurting us
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
Texas Hawk, what we just saw is why this is on Self. He should tell them to quit with this 1 on 1 crap, run the offense, and get it to Perry. They were within four and now it’s eight. Someone has to get these guys to calm down and execute.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@Texas-Hawk-10 that is the problem. Undisciplined group. On the coach, imo
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@DCHawker I am not blaming the refs. This has been a problem all year and Self still hasn’t fixed it.
-
RE: Kansas vs West Virginia
@BeddieKU23 yes, that is their offense. Self needs to be flexible and zone them
