RE: NOA response from KU discussion
@Texas-Hawk-10 I could be wrong about this but I think the NCAA handles all the branding of college athletics. So the NCAA gets royalties from football related sports items that have a university logo so they probably care deeply about college football.

George Will speaks my mind better than I do
I rarely agreed with George Will over the years until Donald Trump came along . Now he has an Op-ed column in the Salt Lake Tribun about the shoe company/NCAA/University mess that perfectly expresses my opinion.
For example " And why is it a federal crime to evade the NCAA’s lackadaisical enforcement of its nonsensical rules by paying families? About schools maintaining (to borrow a phrase from politics) “plausible deniability” about the meat market in tall teenagers, Washington Post columnist Sally Jenkins notes: “Defense attorneys presented text messages between [former Adidas consultant T.J.] Gassnola and Kansas coach Bill Self that showed the coach was well aware of Adidas’ efforts to steer recruits to him, if not the method. Gassnola assured Self that Adidas was ‘here to help’ in getting players for the school, which was finalizing a 12-year, $191 million sponsorship deal with the sneaker company.” Not bad compensation for Kansas-the-victim. almost all of the $8 billion that college sports generate. "
And "Perhaps schools should give candor a try, paying their basketball and football players as value-adding employees who create almost all of the $8 billion that college sports generate. "
No harm, no foul it seems to me.

RE: Where's Jaybate?
His posts about the shoe companies stacking some schools with talented players has been proven, in my mind

RE: The Shoe Co
@BShark you’re right i favor a farm system or G league model as more transparent and fair (maybe and hopefully).
-
RE: The Shoe Co
I sort of agree with HighEliteMajor and am not very troubled by the money aspect. The shoe companies and schools and the NCAA get billions and the athletes get little. I tend toward supporting the spirit of the law rather than the letter. I don’t see much evidence of harm except the disproportionate wealth for the institutions and the NCAA.

RE: New 2019 Recruiting
I can’t read about this without wondering how the current trial and its outcome will affect 2019 recruiting . Will the payoffs be out in the open? Who will be the highest bidder?
I don’t see how this genie goes back in the bottle.

RE: KU 3pt% Last 14 Games, or Riding the Waves of the Three Point Seas
Keep in mind the spacing of the games during the regular season. It’s basically two games over a week instead of two games one day apart. This may make a difference.

RE: I know no one really cares but that never stopped me before!
For the record, I grew up in Wichita back in the 50’s and 60’s when WSU had some basketball cred and still have relatives living there. So I pay a little attention to the Shockers.
I am impressed with their accomplishments over the last several years. I wondered what would happen after Ron Baker and the others from their team graduated. That team was fun to watch and I cheered for them. I have to acknowledge that Greg Marshall has done a good job of carrying on their success in the last two (?) years. Shamet Landry is an entertaining player to watch and even Conner Frankamp is carrying his weight. I do wish Greg Marshall could develop a more mature personality, but that’s probably asking too much

RE: Rock Chalk Woodland
@Gunman It’s great to see Gary win a major tournament. Since I’m not a golfer, he is the only reason I watch it on TV.
-
RE: Which D1 Elite Coach has most wins/OAD and most wins/5-star the last 5 years?
@nuleafjhawk I can’t disagree and yet the wildcats did KU a big favor recently I’m grateful for that

RE: Devonte Graham and Trae Young: A Duel of PGs without Back-Ups
@jaybate-1.0 Thanks for a great synopsis. Cogent and (for you) terse. Rock Chalk!!

RE: Huggy postgame
Watching Coach Huggins made me aware of how well HCBS handles himself after a loss. There aren’t many coaches that can accept the reality of a loss, be positive about the potential to improve from it, and move on. Huggins blamed his players, claimed he was mystified about how to help them improve, and labeled some of the “good players” while others were “bad players”. Motivating by blunt force, seems to me. I am surprised and disappointed.

RE: Can Bruce help us out again?
@Crimsonorblue22 I think it is embarrassingly awkward. But the enemy of my enemy is my friend, or something…
-
RE: Can Bruce help us out again?
@Crimsonorblue22 I just checked the score KSU 23 and OK 9. EMAW!!

RE: Sosinski
@jaybate-1.0 Again you have laid out for us a vision of the complexity behind coaching a top-of-the-field basketball program. I admire your insight and ability to present it so clearly. Thanks!

RE: One for the ages.
@jayballer54 Thanks for the warning–I’m glad I WAS sitting down when I read this post. Pretty amazing!

RE: Anybody watching Duke vs Texas?
@BShark Tripper is a good nickname for Grayson.
-
RE: Anybody watching Duke vs Texas?
@BShark Grayson and Bagley having foul trouble helps too
-
RE: Anybody watching Duke vs Texas?
@cragarhawk Dok and Lightfoot will need help down low against TX
-
RE: Anybody watching Duke vs Texas?
@KirkIsMyHinrich Texas looks like a completely different team than I remember
-
Anybody watching Duke vs Texas?
5 minutes to go in the first half. TX up by 10 and Duke has players in foul trouble.
-
RE: News some of you can use.
@wissox so is the eligibility use-by period more or less than a hundred years?
-
RE: Fire Beatty. Fire him now.
@HighEliteMajor I admit that my expectations for KU football are exceptionally low so I’m not as upset about it as others are. Still the optics are bad, very bad.
-
RE: On Beginning to Think Constructively about KU Football
@jaybate-1.0 Dude, your writing is as dense as a double fudge brownie with thick chocolate frosting. I want two hours of college philosophy credit just for reading all the way though it.
That said, you set the bar pretty high when you advocate for such a reality-based and rational review of the KU football program. Sadly, I am too old and cynical to expect that the university will do this kind of analysis.

@approxinfinity My message didn’t got through. Hit retry and I’m still spinning.

RE: Game Day vs Gorillas! Game Day Thread! Slack is down! Chatting here!
@approxinfinity I’m not having much luck on the Slack app either. I’m in but not getting any posts. I sent one myself which does show up. I mostly get the swirling circle wait icon, as if their servers are bogged down maybe.
-
RE: Game Day vs Gorillas! Game Day Thread! Slack is down! Chatting here!
@approxinfinity oops I should have tried the Slack app, which works great. Yaay!!
-
RE: Game Day vs Gorillas! Game Day Thread! Slack is down! Chatting here!
@approxinfinity I’m getting a site can’t be reached error message on my phone tonight.
-
RE: Game day chats this year - let's use Slack
@approxinfinity okay I’m in. Got to stay relevant, you know!
-
RE: This is interesting
So if a coach leaves, could all the players go with him to the new school?
-
RE: Eclipse Updates
@mayjay Here in Topeka the occlusion will be 99.2%. I think I can be satisfied with seeing it here is the 60% chance of rain doesn’t interfere. The DW may have other ideas, tho…

RE: Board Upgraded - Features and Issues
Looks great so far. I’ll post if I have a problem. Reading this on my tablet while visiting my granddaughter (14 months) is wonderful. Thanks for all your hard work.

RE: Non-KU Games Nov 11
@BShark Thanks for posting. I appreciate not having to chase down all this info on my own. Keep it up.
-
RE: Read "THE MEN OF MARCH"
I’m impressed that you guys know so much about publishers!! Now I’m off to my local library to see if I can check out a copy. Thanks for the heads-up.
-
RE: "3 times KU has kept the streak alive starting the season with 5 new starters"
@approxinfinity I have always admired the way Coach Self speaks at press conferences and on Hawk Talk. He speaks spontaneously and without any pretense or affectation. His agenda always seems to be to give a thoughtful and direct answer to the actual question asked. I don’t know of any other coach who handles himself so well.
-
RE: My game thoughts and musings and amusings
@wissoxfan83 Thanks for posting. I think you pretty much nailed it, from my perspective. I’m looking forward to conference play to see how we stack up with Oklahoma, Baylor and Iowa State.

RE: Requirement for the Next AD and Head Football Coach
@jaybate-1.0 I’m happy to see that my local library has a copy of ‘Railroaded’ on the shelf and I’ll be picking it up this week. It looks like a great read, too! Thanks

RE: Big 12 meeting
Thanks for the link. It sounds like Coach Self sees last season about like many of the posters here–started out as inside-out, then went to outside-in and could not get very comfortable either way. I seem to remember many discussions of exactly that during the season. Makes me glad for all the smart posters here at KU Buckets!
-
RE: Where two or three Jayhawks are gathered....
@wissoxfan83 I appreciate your recent contributions and this one is a good reminder to monitor ourselves so others don’t have to do it for us. Keep up the good work!
-
RE: Self Fullfilling Prophecy
I agree with most of HEM’s points. I also think the second half fizzle was due to playing through Perry Ellis when he was clearly injured and ineffective. I think we would have been better off with Mickelson and Lucas.
-
RE: Jamari
Thanks for posting this. Jamari has always been a favorite of mine. I would love to see him do well in post-league play.
-
RE: It seems??
The love of money may not be the root of all evil but I’m pretty sure the NCAA makes a lot of money by marketing student athletes. So they sound a little sanctimonious when they punish the student for violating NCAA rules. Seems the foxes own the chicken coop but don’t want to own up to their self-interest.
I don’t have a good answer for how to keep the game honest when there is so much money floating around. I don’t think all the onus should be on the athletes, though.
I feel bad for Cliff and KU, but mostly Cliff.

RE: Ellis' 23, Devonte's 20 Spoil Trent's Recipe
@jaybate-1.0 You and I watch the same players and the same games. I see what I see and you see a whole lot more than me. I had to go to the internet to remind myself of this:
Thanks for the entertaining posts and helping me see in 3D.
