Been enjoying the posts intermittently over the summer, thanks to all posters for keeping the site alive. Hadn’t logged in for awhile, so thought I’d give this ‘reply’ a shot and test whether I’m still enrolled. Looking forward to another season of KU hoops and the continuing growth of the program under the tutelage of college basketballs’ best staff and sharing it with College basketballs’ best fans. Rock Chalk, bring on Late Nite!

RE: Jan 13: Game day headlines for KU vs Iowa State
The standing up, hands on hip, is a sprinter recovery method he likely learned from his Mom. Staying upright keeps the diaphragm open and allows better deep breathing, as opposed to the bent over, hands on shorts methods many players use when tired. Lot of coaches insist their players put their hands above their heads. Just my take on the matter after reading many comments on his stance.

RE: I'm Done
What I observe is the nature of the sport and NBA (Not Basketball Anymore) using college as a one year purgatory for gifted lads awaiting their entitlement to make millions. HCBS runs a complicated offensive system that is loaded with multiple options, depending on defensive reaction. It takes a good player a couple of years to fully understand and grasp the options. With the short turnaround from year to year, due to the OAD’s, I see a struggle with running true, complicated team ball systems while accommodating the ‘play now, league now’ mentality of most five star athletes. In the past, HCBS was able to get guys of character, willing to sacrifice/diminish their ‘me’ stats, for development of team ball and ongoing program success. They were generally surrounded by some veterans who know the system and can help teach the new kids. The squid, on the other hand, has mastered the propaganda of year to year ‘success’ through basic offense/defense sets (AAU mentality) of winning games over individual player/system development. There is a college wide, losing struggle to retain the integrity of amateur sports by ‘student athletes’ over the riches awaiting in the league. If you want the five stars, you must sacrifice complicated system team basketball for simpler schemes that reward athleticism over intelligence and patience. I think we struggle with the dichotomy of wanting stars while developing a system that educates and, eventually rewards, those of lesser talent who learn and grow over several seasons and summers of system programs. We all want a stable of stars, but at the same time, want a program that remains competitive, clean and full of likeable, good guys, who we grow to know. This team has some holes, but it will get better. Meeting UK this early was not good timing. Clearly, UK has talent but more importantly this early, had the benefit of 16 more summer practices and 6 games against good teams in the Bahamas. The importance of playing six games (a fifth of a season) and three weeks of extra practice and development of team chemistry cannot be overstated. I doubt that KU has 20% of it’s offense, inbounds, and situational offensive sets implemented yet. HCBS concentrates on the defensive end early, and offense takes awhile, especially with new players in key positions. I’m not worried, but I am troubled by the revolving door of the one year rule. Rock Chalk ya’all.

RE: Greene off Crutches, on schedule for fall return!
I really think Svi will blossom this year. Even with his International experience, off the bench, he has never seen, or suffered, the physicality of playing Division 1 hoops in the States. HCBS runs a complicated defensive scheme with ‘rules’ that take time to learn and, if you don’t, you sit. The true Hi/Low offense is complicated with several options at each pass, starting with whether the entry is wing pass, center or ball drive. They never really ran the Hi/Low last year because of post trouble (either passing into the posts or action after the post received the pass). The offense penalizes the defense for doing the right thing, and our squad last year seldom had the patience or skill sets to run it, and seemed to diet on the AAU weave and dribble drive routine. I think Svi’s shot issues were from having a tired bodily physically (growth, conditioning and banging) which developed into spiraling mental pressures with each missed shot though his diminished playing time. I think he will be stronger, more mature mentally and physically, and more comfortable with his environment. His skill set is awesome and I think/hope he will take advantage of his increased playing time opportunity that is now open with BG rehabilitating. I just wish he could play WUG as that would be bonus development opportunity, although the summer practices will be great for this team and the young-uns coming on board. I’m jazzed about the upcoming year and squad ( to quote Gomer and Goober Pyle: ‘sur-prise, sur-prise, sur-prise’!.) BG, I think, will have a challenge for playing time, and that’s a good thing. Rock chalk y’all.

‘Professional journalism’ and Whitlock do not deserve to be located in the same sentence. Jaybate actually gives a thought to his posts instead of generalized sensationalism to meet a deadline. Thanks for creating this site, by the way, most of the posters here actually have something to offer in the sharing of our Jayhawk thoughts. Thanks to the board for resurrecting good discourse. RE: Shaka Smart in BigXII
Shaka inherited a stacked team from Grant when he met KU. Same may happen his first couple of years at Texas. After he ran out of Grant’s recruits, a weak conference allowed him gaudy win/loss records. Not a fan.

RE: FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs KSU - Jan 11
Maybe we try ‘Black and Blue’. Some folks underestimate how important having those two help bang on the opponents starters, in their minutes, over the course of a game. By the end of the contest, opponents are worn down and fatigued. The depth is really paying dividends as these young 'uns figure it all out. I’m bullish on the Jayhawks and see continued growth through this special season. Rock Chalk, beat ISU and send Weatherwax back to his suffering bride with a sad face.
