Arizona State Sun Devils - Sunday 1 pm - ESPN

  • Garrett will get a lot more playing time against a man to man defense which he is comfortable with as a Freshman. Newman will do better - he has to, he was completely overwhelmed by the Syracuse zone and the even better WSU zone under Boeheim’s tutoring and scouting report.

Coach basically went public on his team yesterday saying that we don’t have any DOGS on this team like Frank, Josh and Landon were last year. He said that Vick is the closest, while Devonte and Garrett could be. He said Doke hasn’t learned how to be a DOG yet.

  • @wrwlumpy You are exactly right about how Newman appeared vs. the zone.

That “Dog” thing Self is referring to (many different ways to say it) is part DNA, part learned or acquired. But there are some, no matter what you do, they don’t have it. Others have it from birth. If DG doesn’t have it yet, then I wouldn’t bet on it. I’m a bit surprised/disappointed that is the way Self sees DG right now.

If you were picking the five you wanted on the floor at the end of a game, would it include Garrett or Newman right now? I’d say Garrett now. But I’m a bit torn because of the composition and lack of depth on our team. If Cunliffe is a player, then I think that makes a move by Self to Garrett at some point easier because we would not be totally reliant on Newman. I think that’s why Self probably has to stick with Newman now as a starter. I think Newman can get out of this funk. But it is an interesting thing to monitor.

  • @HighEliteMajor

I like Garret a lot and I said before he might be the steal of the class; perhaps the best defender on the team just needing experience to get to the next level.

I am starting to think that Newman is a better player in his mind that in reality. He shows flashes of brilliance but right now he is undisciplined and selfish; not something that Coach Self appreciates.

  • @HighEliteMajor I agree, I would start Garrett Sunday. Maybe Newman needs the Jeff Withey treatment, hit every stair in the fieldhouse! I honestly hope Sam pushes these guys for playing time. Instead of the we got who got short bench stuff.

  • I’d start Garrett, too. Doesn’t mean Newman doesn’t play. He’ll play a lot.

@JayHawkFanToo @kjayhawks One interesting stat. I’m not a total advanced stats guy, but the Box Score Plus Minus (BPM) over the course of the season is pretty accurate. Mason and JJ were tops last season, with DG second. It’s basically the number of points a player contributes to over the average player, per 100 possessions.

This season, Marcus Garrett is at 12.6, Newman 7.5 (Garrett is right there with DG and Vick). That seems to meet with the eye test that we generally look better with Garrett in vs. Newman. As a note, not only was Cunliff’s PER very low at ASU, his BPM was the second lowest among ASU regulars (comparing his 10 games vs. ASU players over the entire season). Small sample size. I’m wait and see on Cunliffe.

On whether Newman is selfish – I think he is. But I do think that sometimes, the bronco needs bustin’ so to speak. I just don’t know how that looks, or how Self is handling that. But if someone can convince a guy to be a team player it’s Bill Self. The only player I ever really questioned his handling of, in that regard, was Tyshawn Taylor. I do think there is a reasonable chance that Newman is a different player in two months. Like Cunliffe at ASU, small sample size.

  • @kjayhawks Ok you really need to control your use of ridiculous hyperbole re: Newmans vertical. 10 appears to be a massive over exaggeration! 😉

I know you aren’t their biggest fan, but KJ Lawson has a lot of that dog in him, Dedric too but not quite as much.

    I wouldn’t count on it.

  • KU wins 85-74.

  • I really don’t have a good feeling about today’s game against unbeaten #16 ASU. I think today will say a lot about the character of the current line up.

If they take the crowd out early, we’re in for a long ugly day. Even if they don’t punch us in the face first, they have some nice come from behind wins… this is a team that isn’t going to give up even if they are down a bunch.

But… Vegas has KU by 11, and we’re playing in the comfy confines of good ol AFH, so who am to go against Vegas and the good guys at the best home field advantage in college hoops. Plus, Hurley is an A-hole who deserves a nice long (and hopefully early) rock chalk chant to end that unbeaten streak.

Feeling a change in the weather pattern from last week, I’ll override my nervousness… KU wins 77-71.

  • Man this game today is going to be hard to watch. - -Well let me rephrase that - -This game is going to be realty hard to listen to.

Damn I sure the hell hope Walton doesn’t take his shirt off today. He just butchers games. Spends half the game asking play by play guy what his name is, - talks about bicycle riding -anything and everything other then what’s taking place on the floor.

If someone makes a pretty good play - it automatically becomes the BEST play of the year - - - How many times will we hear him say " Send it back big fella " - - Or the word " please"

There is a lot of times when a team may go to the free throw line have enough time to shoot two free throws - -have a lane violation , a miss and a put back before they will even mention anything about the game. - - This guy is a mess, - -or he will talk about his diet - or some kinds of food, I’m tellin ya this guy has hit the pipe once to long and hard, not looking forward to it at all - -but got to get through this to watch the boys rebound back after that disaster this week.

All I have to say is - - we better be ready, better bring it , these guys are no joke, - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer54 If you had to pick one…

I suppose though even though IT’S not good - -I guess I’d take Vitale , I mean at least he some what maintains a little better focus on the game. - - -in between oh he is a diaper dandy - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Man we need to play smart today. - - -Just heard on pre-game Ku has shot 106 free throws - -Arizona State - -has shot 249 free throws, what’s that tell ya - -they are VERY AGGRESSIVE draw lots of fouls - that might not be good. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • I ultimately think losing early like this will benefit Kansas later in the season. But man, between Bill Walton calling the game, Kansas losing back-to-back games to a former Syracuse assistant coach and an obnoxious former Duke player, and Kansas “fans” leaving AFH early today, it’s hard to be positive right now.

Have to give ASU credit, they made a lot of tough shots. A lot of low-percentage shots. Some games they won’t hit those, today they did.

I’m afraid we just suck this year dude. No NBA talent and our best players are mostly not athletic enough when going against better college teams.

  • The talent is there for Kansas, but it seems like they lack grit. Grit that they had last season from Mason, Jackson, and Lucas. Especially Mason.

Graham, Vick and Doke are our only decent players right now.

  • Let’s just put Lightfoot’s jersey on DL and play him. Nobody will notice. No one say anything.

    We should definitely do this.

  • Thought the guys played about as hard as they could for most of the game. Mental mistakes for sure. Missed shots. But honestly just flat got beat by a better team. We aren’t terribly athletic as a whole and just plain eye test as very mediocre when not hitting a ridiculous % of 3s. By Kansas standards this will most likely be a tough season. But, everyone has those eventually.

  • @HighEliteMajor Garrett.
