Notebook: Why Les Miles is sticking with Carter Stanley at QB

  • I think if you make a switch this early and MacVittie is just brutal it is hard to go back without losing the team. I am more disappointed that MacVittie couldn’t beat Stanley out to begin with . Stanley needs to use his legs more to gain some yards on the ground.

  • I believe it’s more than who the QB is. A lot more.

If any of you live in Lawrence, please don’t take this personally - it’s a generalized statement. From my point of view, at this moment in time, Lawrence, Ks could care less whether KU is playing on Saturday or not, unless it’s with a round ball.

I see much more enthusiasm from the players, the crowd and the town in just about any High School setting. It’s one of those “If you win, we will come” Catch-22’s. Admittedly, there was a nice crowd there Saturday. A nice, ho-hum, when does basketball season start crowd.

KU football fans are now where K-State basketball fans were just a few years ago. They didn’t know what to do. They didn’t know how to be basketball fans. Now, don’t string up the nooses just yet, I hate K-State when it comes to sports. But their fans are learning basketball better than our fans are learning football.

Somehow we have to convince the fans to be enthusiastic even when we suck. Even when the coach calls stupid plays. (or the OC - the coach is ultimately responsible). I swear, I’ve never been to ANY sporting event where the whole crowd sat on their hands during the player introduction. I was shocked.

If KU is ever going to excel at football, the city and fans need to help them.

  • @nuleafjhawk I agree to a certain extent. KSU basketball fans are only rowdy for a few games of the year, that place doesnt sell out threw out the year. The football team has to at least do something exciting at the same time. There was really only a few plays on either side to stand and cheer for in a 12-7 snooze fest game. Allen Fieldhouse and any other sporting event I’ve been to including middle school, high school, NAIA, Juco and D1 athletic events aren’t noisy if the team isnt producing at least exciting plays.

  • I also am starting to think that the starting QB battle wasn’t near as competitive as we were made to believe. If it was, you’d think Miles wouldve tried to get Macvitte some snaps, Carter struggled badly with accuracy and decision making.

  • @kjayhawks I understand that the team needs to get/keep the crowd excited, but -just asking, were you at the game? The crowd wasn’t in the game at the start, middle and especially at the end. The most applause I heard was for the young man (Marine?) and his family. While that was appreciated and well deserved, I would liked to have seen that level of enthusiasm for the players.

  • @nuleafjhawk I wasn’t so maybe you are a better judge but I’ve been in Allen when it’s quite as a mouse fart.

  • @kjayhawks No, wouldn’t say I’m a better judge at all. I guess I was just expecting more, what with the undefeated record (lol) and the new high powered coach.

I heard one guy say leaving the stadium - “Same ol s**t. Been a season ticket holder for 30 years and its always the same. I’m done.”

I hated to hear that, but kind of understand.!

  • Lol took him 30 years to figure it out. 1 semester of Terry Allen did me in.

  • @nuleafjhawk I meant to say wasn’t there lol

  • @dylans we were good after Terry Allen, we just fired the best coach we’ve had and to quote Todd Ressing “because people are soft”.

  • @dylans lol, thought the same thing about the 30 years. Guess Mangino and the Orange Bowl gave him a false sense of hope.

  • Every time I’ve been to AFH, it’s been loud, every time. I was there for some great games and when we set the record for loudest bb arena!

  • @nuleafjhawk I mean it has been statistically the worst 5 years in program history these past 5 years and by fair amount. Ku never was or will be great but only man that can win here is gone.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 it can be loud for sure, but if we ain’t playing well, it is the polar opposite. I’ve been to dozens and dozens and dozens of games there, if we are down and not playing well, it’s not loud.

  • @kjayhawks we have a coach that had won a national championship. Im going to give him more than 2 games with someone else’s recruits

  • @approxinfinity I just can’t stand it when people think logically and sensibly. Stop it man - hop on the “we’re always going to be losers” bandwagon with us…

I’m pretty down on KU football right now, but we have had (over the long haul) some very, very good teams. We can have them again if all the ingredients come together. I also liked the Big Guy very much and thought the Admin was spineless and weak for firing him - but he’s not the Messiah, there are other guys that can do the job.

I hope he’s on campus right now.

  • @approxinfinity that’s fair, I just don’t know if its possible at this point. That and burning timeouts aren’t on the players.

I know who I feel like was the best Fb Coach here - -but I don’t dare say his name of some might get their feelings hurt - -has was rough on the kids - they shouldn’t be put up with verbal abuse - -and here we go - they will say it’s how they represented KU off the field - Ok that’s great - just saying he was by far our best Football Coach not convincing me otherwise.

Having said all that I think IF and I said IF people are ALREADY wanting to put a noose around Coach Miles - then YOU are the one’s that need to go - -not him. - -It was a bad game - -it was a sucky game - -it was a pathetic game - -but with the athletes that’s here right now - - most of these kids are not LES Miles kids - -give him a couple full years of recruiting there will be improvements - - BELIEVE THAT. - -you can already see just by numbers alone - - beore he came we had at that point ONE recruit/commit - - -ONE

Now for 2020 and we are actually ONE over the allowed limit - -sure their will be de-commits - - BUT last year we had ONE - -you can’t de-commit if there is nobody there to de-commit.

Better athletes coming in - -competent staff - -we need a QB - -plain and simple - -and it has been stated here and I agree - -we mav have one already - -he has been mentioned - - Locklin. - -just not yet - -

Dammit we have just got to quit shuffling off Coach’s at the drop of the hat. - -How the hell are you EVER going to get any kind of Continuity if every time we blink we get rid of a Coach? - -how can you expect ANY kind of a athlete to commit here if he doesn’t know from one day to the next who he is going to be playing for?

Our biggest problem as of right now? - -It’s the QB people - -that and D-line -got to get better pressure - -better run defense - -end of rant - - have a great day

Boy do I ever agree with you kjayhawks - - - I have been many , many times to AF - and like you say if were/the team is dead/sloppy/behind - -you can hear a dime drop from the section on the opposite side of the field house - - doesn’t take much to get the crowd back into it - -BUT many - - -many - - many times I’ve felt the cheer leaders - -the yell leaders were the only other ones at the game. - -you are spot on – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Thank you – couldn’t agree more - - it’s crazy the thought process sometimes of some people

  • Would someone please tell Chris Klieman that he needs to stop winning. He can wait 3-5 years like all the rest of the coaches.

And if the 3-5 year waiting law works, why didn’t we hang on to Beaty? He won 4 games last year (which is like 9 at any other college) and was very close to winning several more. By the “wait and see” rule, he should still be here.

  • @nuleafjhawk Chris Klieman looks like a far superior coach to Miles at this point. People had KSU winning only 3 games this season. They look bigger, faster and stronger. KU looks like they drank beers all offseason.

The tid bit about us stings a little.

  • @rockchalkwyo OUCH. I guess the truth hurts. Love the “pillow fight” analogy.

I think @approxinfinity is upset with me right now or I’d ask him to add an " LOL " button.

  • @nuleafjhawk all we can do at this point is join in laughter with the rest of the country.

  • @kjayhawks You know, my head tells me that Les Miles is a great coach (despite going for it on 4th and 4 when he should have kicked a field goal…sorry). Logic and all that good stuff tells me it’s going to take …3 years to build any kind of competitive program.

But my heart says WIN NOW, DANG IT!!! WE’RE SICK OF BEING THE LAUGHINGSTOCK OF THE BIG 12 (and possibly the nation).

I had no false hopes of going to a bowl this year. But I sure as heck thought we’d win the first two games for sure. Maybe sneak one or two in the conference. Now I have to believe we’ve won all we’re going to this season.

    Oh well.

Because he never made much on-field progress and left the roster as a smoldering crater. Bears repeating: still 15 under the lid of 85, less than a single full classes worth of underclassmen. Beaty went all in to save his job last year then promptly lost to Nicholls. /scene

  • I guess I’ve never noticed it quiet for long in the 100 or so games in be been in Allen Fieldhouse, because I’m yelling the whole damn game. If it’s quiet while you’re there that’s on you for not doing something about it!

  • @dylans Yeah, " quiet " is not a word I’d normally associate with AFH, but I’ve only been there a handful of times. Loud times.

Weren’t Allen Fieldhouse and Arrowhead stadium documented as the loudest venues of their type a couple of years ago?

  • @nuleafjhawk all good my man. I’m just speaking for me… You don’t have to give miles any leash

  • @approxinfinity But you’re right. I’m being foolish to expect big things right away. It’s like that old saying “Lord, give me patience and I want it RIGHT NOW”.

So, does that mean you’re working on the “LOL” button…?

  • @nuleafjhawk yes? Happened twice during a Kentucky game, I was there.

  • @nuleafjhawk the trouble is that beating Coastal Carolina isn’t doing big things lol. I’m not saying that the fieldhouse isn’t loud, the Arizona State loss a couple years back is prime example. That place was asleep in the second half. I’m sure Cameron Indoor wasn’t too boisterous when Miami was sparking them by 25 a few years ago. I’m a pretty loud opinionated person if y’all haven’t figured that out yet lol.
