Mystery Recruit

  • At this point, I don’t know that a mystery man is coming. It’s pretty late in the game. The music has stopped and pretty much everyone has found a seat. Unless someone else is going to reclassify, it’s hard to see someone switching a 2018 commit this late. Most of the grad transfers have also found homes. There are obviously still some guys out there, but most of those guys are going to be looking for significant time, something KU may not be able to guarantee for most of them.

    It’s a tough market to figure. The investigation is looming over all of college basketball, and will probably get bigger, sweeping up more programs, rather than smaller. I just don’t see where the mystery man comes from right now.

  • I’d say it’s nothing more than click bait until proven otherwise.

    Yeah the line-up seems mostly set, it just changes based on what Doke does. Can’t really add a meaningful post player if Doke goes.

  • Wouldn’t be the mystery recruit but what about adding Jalen Lecque in 2018? I’d be pretty okay with it, tbh. Pretty…prettttttttaaay okay with it.

  • KU has a good shot with Lecque, but probably not in 2018 barring us having to go small because of departures.

    Seems like if he does go in 18 it would be Brandon Rush kind of late.

  • Saddiq Bey decommitted from NC State. Worth a look at this point, imo.

    Oh yeah it would be after AAU season. So he probably wouldn’t really hit his stride until conference play. But he’d be our most explosive player right out of the gate and could play off the ball, where he’s more natural at this point.

  • Lecque is “old” for his class, so a move to 2018 wouldn’t be crazy. He’s basically a month younger than Quentin Grimes (one of the younger players in his class). However, if Lecque stays in 2019, he would become one of the oldest players in his class, as he would turn 19 next summer. That may be a bit of a factor for him.

    He’s an elite athlete for his size. I don’t know how he would fit in this backcourt because he would probably need to play on the ball a bit more than Langford or another true wing would, but when in doubt, you take the talent and figure the rest out later.

  • @BShark

    Any chance that it has to do with Adidas? If this is the case KU will not be a candidate.

  • @BShark

    Here is my prediction and it is almost money in the bank. These are the only options:

    a.) no one is signed;

    b.) Bob Hill channels some player from Eurasia we haven’t heard of;

    c.) a very good player with a ton of baggage inhibiting clearance to play switches petroshoeco leans and signs with adidas-KU;

    d.) some 3-star player committed to a minor major, like Towson State, has sharply improved since committing, and de-commits to take the chance of a life time and sign with an elite major.

    That’s it.

    That’s all that ever happens.

    There is no mystery to this at all.

    What other scenario ever happens this time of year than one, or more, of the four above?

  • Ooo ooo oooh is it Luka Doncic??? Will he forgo the NBA draft, skirt NCAA eligibility rules and play for KU next season? I’d take. 😆

  • It is possible that a 2019 prospects reclassifies for 2018 either late summer or commits and joins half way through the season like De Sousa did. I understand there are still a few prospects that fit this criteria.

  • I’m 90% sure it’s this guy. But don’t look for KU to be involved this late. Better off holding it open. https://247sports.com/player/mickey-pearson-46035661

    Yeah at this point there are good options for 2019, no sense taking filler now. Already have enough guards that some won’t even play.

  • @FarmerJayhawk

    I thought he committed to St. Louis…

  • @FarmerJayhawk

    If KU were to take someone, it has to be someone that can come in right away as an impact player. Mickey Pearson looks like a guy that will eventually make an impact, but maybe not until his sophomore year. I just don’t think he is a guy that can push KU to the next level this year. He’s similar to Agbaji, and we already have him. I think Agbaji will be a very good player in time (maybe a starter in 2019-20). Having another 2019-20 contributor is nice, but if we grab someone late, it should be to shore up this season, not to get a head start on next year.

  • @JayHawkFanToo decommitted yesterday.

    @justanotherfan agreed. Taking another wing who’s probably better off redshirting is meh. Let’s see what we can pull in the 2019 class or the mid-year transfer market.

  • @FarmerJayhawk

    Frankly, I much rather have Vick instead and the schoolie is tied up for one season only .

    Leaving the spot open might help with recruiting too. I would much rather the staff make a big push to sign someone like Sam Williamson early than add a warm body for this season.

  • I don’t see us adding anyone at this unless Vick can talk coach Self into letting him return. As stated PT is very limited as it with who we currently have no sense in getting some to sit on the bench for 3 years.

  • @BShark

    The good thing about Vick coming back is that it does not interfere with the 2019 recruits, does not tie a scholarship beyond next season and it is a pretty well known commodity with a potential high upside.

  • Just because bill self said hes gonna talk to Vic doesn’t mean hes coming back

  • I don’t think we have a place for him, misses w/team chemistry from the get go. I do feel sorry for him, don’t know why that decision was made so early, but recruiting was done because of it.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 exactly. Self said recently in an article that agbaji was a take because Vick was leaving.
